What do your Dc do with the house key whilst at school?

I've got to take DS to an emergency doctors appointment this afternoon. We will be back 25 minutes after DD finishes school. If I've ever been in this situation before, I've put the house key on a necklace for her to wear (DS would wear it on a lanyard tied to his belt).

DD has double sport this afternoon so can't wear a necklace. Should I ask the teacher if she can hand the key to her for the lesson or should she leave it in a bag in the changing room? I don't want someone to nick it and get into our house!

As an aside, as she doesn’t have a phone, tell her what to do if she loses the key. Ie sit on the doorstep till you get back.

Longdistance · 06/09/2022 13:01

My dds keep their keys in their backpacks in a pocket. Dd2 was in Year 6 when she got her own key. ASC finished at 5.30, I wasn’t home by then, so she’d let herself in. Tbf, she didn’t have far to walk and she knows the neighbours. It was always in her backpack.

@nutellachurro you would have no issue with a 9 year old or 10 year old buying beer?

Alcohol free beer?

No

Why would anyone have an issue with that

Unless you're against any carbonated drinks for those age groups

Think your over thinking it abit the key will be fine zipped in her bag somewhere. We put a cheap lock box on the side of our house with a key in it. That’s been handy for all of us at different times. Worth doing once kids older.

This. But not a CHEAP key safe

there are many reasons that getting a good quality key safe is a good idea. Your kids can use it and as they get older they’ll use it more and more. I certainly didn’t want my 18 year old sons out on piss at night with a key shoved in their pocket or wallet. Had enough issue with them loosing phones 🤣🤣
But there is also other advantages such as if you’re away and emergency comes up..you can call someone to get into your house. For workman to access- in fact my key lock was put up by my builders.
theyre also good for cleaners, carers, nurses etc.

buy a decent one that is accredited and instal firmly. They are very safe is a fully accredited one.

I’ve used for 15 years with no issues.

for extra security I have a ring Camera installed with line of sight to key safe.

But it's not beer. You said so yourself. It's a soft drink that happens to be beer-flavoured.

Honestly where do you live that you're worried that small children are hardened master criminals? Compton? Beirut?

It's shandy, not crack cocaine. You have to be on a wind up.

userhjf67 · 06/09/2022 13:15

DD's have key on key ring in there bag

Poppyliveshere · 06/09/2022 13:18

Won’t help today but we have put a key safe up for whoever gets back first

C152 · 06/09/2022 13:18

I'm really surprised a 10 year old doesn't have their own key to their home. Just give her a set of keys and she keeps them in her bag. No one's interested in stealing a kid's keys - unless, perhaps, her classmates know you're a multimillionaire or have a pool/ice-skating rink/bike track/skate park etc in your garden!

Boysnme · 06/09/2022 13:18

My oldest keeps his in his zipped pocket and my youngest uses our lock box.

So it doesn't bother you that they would be completely insecure and unattended as she'll obviously be in her PE kit? I've always made sure they've had them on them at all times before.

@LionessesRules yes, I did that too but I could lock them in my locker or in the desk if I left to go somewhere.

The chances that another pupil would be allowed in the changing rooms unsupervised, not be seen and challenged for rooting through you dds bag, be able to work out which one her bag is, know today she had a house key when 99% of the time she doesn't, and, most significantly of all even WANT to break into your house anyway is ridiculously unlikely. Not to mention if she checks as soon as she gets back this gives the opportunistic teenager, what, 40 mins max to get out of school, to your house, and ransack it of all your belongings before she notices its gone.

Unless you are the local millionaires and live in a high crime area why are you working on the assumption that everyone would burgle your house the moment they have the opportunity? I'm sure the majority of kids in your dds class have a house key, why would she be targeted and not them?

Just tell her to stick it in an inside pocket snd not tell anyone she has it!

If you're this stressed now how are you going to cope when she goes out clubbing with a key and driving license with your full address on it?

Waterfallgirl · 06/09/2022 13:19

OP are you in the crime capital of Columbia or Brazil?

I am convinced no 9 or 10 yr old is remotely interested in where she keeps the key.

I am sorry if you an anxiety disorder , but if you don’t this is really overthinking a no problem.

Please do not put the key on a chain around your child’s next, that’s far more dangerous if she falls over or gets it caught anywhere.

Clymene · 06/09/2022 13:20

LionessesRules · 06/09/2022 11:28

It's clipped to the inside pocket of their bag, on a plastic spring, so it never needs detaching.

Just like my keys (house and car) sit in my bag at work, and aren't always right next to me.

Yeah that's what we do.

vroom321 · 06/09/2022 13:22

I put one in the front pocket of dd 10 school bag and the other dd 12 who has no zips on her bag into her pencil case.

Waterfallgirl · 06/09/2022 13:22

@latetothefisting is correct. When she is older she has ID on her when she goes out which has yr address on it, plus most likely s
a door key.
easiest thing is to use a lockbox but I expect you wouldn’t want a key for your house sitting in a secure box outside?

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 12:56

The Key issue, just giver the key on a keyring to put in her bag/locker. If no bag/locker just give it to the school office in a clearly marked envelope e.g "Annie's House Key, Class 2" to mind, and she collects at end of day.

The beer thing, no harm in a shandy bass in a tin, or... I even make 8 year old a shandy in the house, neck of the small alcoholic peroni bottle in a deep glass and topped up with lemonade 😳 he likes the taste of beer.

He's even had non alcoholic peroni in a glass. It's just hops flavouring and carbonated water. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mommabear20 · 06/09/2022 13:26

Unless she's flashing it around, and telling everyone she has a key, no one is going to steal it if they dont know about it 🤷‍♀️ just leave it in her gym bag or trouser pocket

NerrSnerr · 06/09/2022 13:27

Do you think another 10 year old is going to steal her key and burgle her house?

ThatWillBeAll · 06/09/2022 13:29

Ten year olds in primary school do not go through each other's bags and steal from their classmates.

And if they did, they wouldn't be stealing house keys.

CaramelTwirl · 06/09/2022 13:30

We used to buy cans of Shandy Bass and pretend to be drunk 😂

FourChimneys · 06/09/2022 13:32

We left a key hanging in an evergreen shrub near the door for years. Not helpful for flats though.

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 13:33

@QuestionableMouse no I would not let my 9/10 year old drink alcohol and I don't know anyone who would 😮

I have a lock box/key safe attached to my wall by the back door for the kids to use to get in as they secondary school lot are usually home before me and my eldest are usually home late if they have been out with.
When my second eldest was in school he lost his tie when he was in year 8 and had to trade in his phone or door key for the day to borrow one for the office. When he went back in the afternoon to trade it back the school had lost the door key, I received a phone call from the school head explaining it had been miss placed and they will do all they can to find it, 4 years later it has never been found.

Fifthtimelucky · 06/09/2022 13:41

Obviously too late for today, but I recommend a key safe.
