What do your Dc do with the house key whilst at school?

I've got to take DS to an emergency doctors appointment this afternoon. We will be back 25 minutes after DD finishes school. If I've ever been in this situation before, I've put the house key on a necklace for her to wear (DS would wear it on a lanyard tied to his belt).

DD has double sport this afternoon so can't wear a necklace. Should I ask the teacher if she can hand the key to her for the lesson or should she leave it in a bag in the changing room? I don't want someone to nick it and get into our house!

He keeps it zipped in the front pocket of his school bag.
Not lost it yet, although he regularly leaves it hanging in his locker as the locker key is on the same key ring.

Louise0701 · 06/09/2022 13:58

DD is 9 and has hers in her bag.

Bag. Pocket, pencil case.

@nutellachurro alcohol free still has alcohol in it, just less. And pp mentioned shandy which is definitely alcohol! And why would you want them to get used to the taste of beer?

Anyway, I am clearly over thinking the house key issue. She left with it in her coat pocket and I shall hope she doesn't lose it.

I cannot install a key safe as I'm not allowed to alter the outside of the building or any communal areas in any way.

It's alcohol FREE beer you were getting your knickers in a twist over

I can never be OP's friend, I make shandy with actual beer for 8 year old DS. A thimble of it topped up with a gallon of lemonade 🤣👀

Don't get me wrong I'm not making him "lemon top" (half a pint with a dash of lemonade in the top)

Even if you buy a "shandy" pop can it's still 0.1% because of the hops 🤣

A trace amount. Just like many medications that are fine for children have a small amount of alcohol in them.

There are similar trace levels of alcohol in certain breads, very ripe bananas, fruit juices, Kombucha.

I could never be the OPs friend as I make a mental note to avoid the overly anxious!

Getting kids used to the taste of beer Confused

OP's DC clearly goes to school with Ocean's Eleven Year Olds

MrsMontyD · 06/09/2022 15:16

I don't think dd ever took a key to primary, we have relatives close by and she'd have called and had a visit with them if no one was home (I worked part time) I appreciate not everyone has this option.

At secondary she kept it in her purse, no idea what happened to it during PE but I assume all their iPhones are kept safe so changing room doors are maybe locked ?? I wouldn't have had any security concerns at primary.

I would advise a key safe or an agreed safe place to leave a key because my main issue has always been getting DD to remember to take her key.

MrsMontyD · 06/09/2022 15:19

Just to add, we're moving soon and a key safe is on my list of things to have installed, handy for nights out as well as teenagers.

chipshopElvis · 06/09/2022 15:31

Blazer pocket. They also have phones and debit cards.

KittyMcKitty · 06/09/2022 15:44

OP I think you are imagining problems where there are none. Does your DD’s primary school have a high % of students or teachers stealing pupils house keys and then breaking into their houses? Or indeed has it ever happened?

just tuck it in her bag somewhere where it won’t fall out by accident.

Duchess379 · 06/09/2022 15:59

Blimey, I just had a key in my bag to let myself in. No biggy

ferneytorro · 06/09/2022 16:00

I have absolutely no idea. I’m wondering if I should have!

I don't think so, if they're old enough to be given a key they're old enough to look after it, in theory. You decide what that age is on a individual basis.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 06/09/2022 16:29

We leave a key under the bin around the back.

I'd just put it in her bag no one wants to steal a door key

mathanxiety · 06/09/2022 16:30

I put DD's key on a length of elastic that was pinned into the interior pocket of her jacket so she had only to reach in, pull out the key on the elastic, unlock the door, and put the key back into her pocket. This was after the weather got cold. Before that, the key was pinned into the pocket of her skirt, with a longer piece of elastic. No lost keys, no shivering DD stuck outside for hours.

mathanxiety · 06/09/2022 16:31

You can pin it to the inside of her schoolbag if she has no pockets.

Girlintheframe · 06/09/2022 16:33

Why don't you get a key safe?

You can set it up with any number you like. That way the key is always safe and available for those who know the number

Brideandpredjudice · 06/09/2022 16:36

You sound extremely paranoid.

Who really ties a house key around their child's neck/waist? Mental

mountainsunsets · 06/09/2022 16:45

Mine was just kept in my blazer pocket. Isn't that normal?

SchoolInForeignLands · 06/09/2022 16:53

@Brideandpredjudice maybe! Or it seems I definitely am! I made a necklace to hold a key when I was at uni (lab work, no pockets) so it seemed the obvious thing to give her a couple of years ago. Now she's a bit more careful with her things so yes, bag or coat seems to be the thing to do.

i do accept I am being ridiculous Blush that's why I asked!

We have a key safe as our house keys have to be ordered if one is lost. The key safe is very handy for me too as I don't have to take a bunch of keys out with me, just my phone.

Preeeettyprettygood · 06/09/2022 20:25

Fucking hell this thread 😂 I can't even contribute as I have no experience as my child is too young yet but I think back to being at high-school an nobody I know could have given a shit about house keys let alone anything else other than a fag or getting out of a lesson lol. But I DO know you'd have had the absolute shit ripped out of you if you wore a house key, or attached to a belt regardless.

It makes me feel abit sad that this is even a thread. Surely an private alternative could be discussed?

They're not going to get drunk on shandy, steal the key and break into your house. The shandy thing is utterly irrelevant.

Just put the key in her bag, on a bit if elastic or something and get on with your day.
