I've just seen on Sky News that a teenager has passed away after a "brawl" involving more than 100 people! What on earth is going on?

I saw machetes in the first headline I saw on a Google search. Nothing surprises me anymore, especially not when it comes to London. No disrespect to any kindly Londoners here.

We're on holiday and dreading going home. London has just been getting worse and worse. Hopefully things improve when schools go back and it gets colder but I'm not holding out much hope. Youth centres have been closing and there's not much for kids to do as everything is so expensive. It's not the place I grew up and we're itching to get out.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/09/2022 15:21

London is a big place. We are in London at the moment and it has all been very calm and genteel. No mass brawls around where we are staying.

Abracadabra12345 · 04/09/2022 15:23

Whereabouts in London? I mean, London is huge and each area has a distinctive identity so to say “London” as one big mass is a bit misleading

You beat me to it!

ThisIsMyHappyFacee · 04/09/2022 15:29

It was at midnight, in East London, so probably gang related. No really uncommon sadly

MrsDanversRidesAgain · 04/09/2022 15:36

People not being allowed into a party, according to the link.

Doveyouknow · 04/09/2022 15:38

It wasn't in a particularly rough area of London. I lived near there for a few years and there wasn't anything like that kind of trouble. Not sure it's a London issue really. There's trouble everywhere.

GoAround · 04/09/2022 15:43

It’s a big place, there’s nothing happening in my part of London. Still horrible though and pretty scary. Tower Hamlets isn’t the nicest bit of London but where this happened is very close to QM Uni and in an area really popular with students.

MrsDanversRidesAgain · 04/09/2022 15:48

Tower Hamlets not rough? it's had a problem with gang related violence for years It's among the top 10 most dangerous boroughs in London.

Is that men again? Report says “people” but I wonder how many women were wielding machetes.

Exactly.

Lockheart · 04/09/2022 15:51

Nothing but peace and quiet (if you ignore the traffic noise of course) over here in NW London.

GB News tho'

"Hurrah for the Blackshirts!"

dreamingbohemian · 04/09/2022 15:57

Well it's definitely not all London but it does seem like inadequate policing is a big part of the problem

For years lower level crimes have been completely neglected by the police, gangs and organised crime have a huge space to operate in. Thanks Tories!

If you wanted to live on the street where the brawl happened, it would set you back just over a million for a 3 bed terrace.

Fair enough. I presumed it was fairly central from the report I saw.

I'm from up north, where our cities are much smaller!

Crocwok · 04/09/2022 16:02

Lower levels of policing play a huge part, as does the lack of any sort of interventions to try and cut the amount of gang related violence. Scotland has done incredible work in reducing knife crime, and although obviously not the same, it seems london is doing fuck all.

MrsDanversRidesAgain · 04/09/2022 16:03

"Hurrah for the Blackshirts!"

That was 1933. And the Daily Mail; which wasn't alone in cheering on Fascism (about which most people outside Germamy knew little at the time) as an alternative to Bolshevism (about which they knew all too much after 1917).

Summerholidays204949393 · 04/09/2022 16:04

It’s not just London though, most major cities have huge problems with serious youth violence. It’s horrible the way the world is going, we live bout 7/8 miles from a major city (us to the actual centre rather than outskirts). I’m desperate too move out of the area

Mossygreenchypre · 04/09/2022 16:09

It'll be gang related, the party's will have been targeted for whoever was in there.

Such a scary disregard for life.

Brigante9 · 04/09/2022 16:11

Sadly, there are stabbing pretty much every day, knife carrying is rife in London.

Cherchezlaspice · 04/09/2022 16:20

Posts like this really drive home the fact that lots of people have no concept of just how big London is. No reason why they should, but it’s interesting. OP, in terms of population, we’re bigger than quite a lot of countries.

What's happening in London? About a million things, at any given point. Some of them delightful, some of them terrifying.
