I've just seen on Sky News that a teenager has passed away after a "brawl" involving more than 100 people! What on earth is going on?

Yup. A substantial share of the blame here falls on the Tories, there's no getting round that.

Bollocks. It’s a subset of the community committing violent crime. The other half live under the Tory’s and can control themselves.

Not as simple, years of austerity, cuts in services, treated as scum - while I never excuse a person it’s been shown time and time again these things have consequences

People who have it feel they have nothing to lose and live in a society they don’t feel part of do not conform to societal standards. You need to break the cycle and give them a stake which is what community outreach is about, all the things supporting that and the wrap around support have gone

Not the point of this thread but Mumsnet needs better moderation. This is hate speech, reported last night and still there. Shocking.

Why would they feel disenfranchised though, what are they not feeling part of?

London’s incredibly culturally diverse and got achieving state schools and universities. It’s got every service you could imagine especially compared to other parts of the U.K.
What community outreach would help. Which communities are you talking about?

There's plenty enough drugs and thieving in Cornwall!

Yeah, Cornwall is not the example I'd have chosen to make that particular point!

Tony Blair 😂

I was referring to the now deleted messages. Perhaps you missed them.

I'm only a Tory basher when a lot of the problems in the UK can be traced back to Tony Blair, so that's a lot these days. The Tories have had an 80 seat majority in the time they've been at the helm and have done sweet FA.

The mayor of London who is ultimately in charge of policing in London has been a Labour appointee since 2016. When ever the ‘right’ attempt to institute any form of preventive policing, there are howls of rage from the Left. Tower Hamlets has been ‘Labour’ forever, I doubt they have ever had a Conservative MP or Council.

I don’t think you can blame this on ‘the Tories’, though it’s better than having to think about what might be going on.

But it’s central government who have cut the policing budget to nothing.

If you wanted to live on the street where the brawl happened, it would set you back just over a million for a 3 bed terrace.

That doesn't mean much when the same can be said everywhere in London. Tower Hamlets is notoriously bad for gangs.
