What's happening in London? Brawl involving 100 people?

I've just seen on Sky News that a teenager has passed away after a "brawl" involving more than 100 people! What on earth is going on?

GB News tho'

"Hurrah for the Blackshirts!"

Yes, wish I'd looked at where the link led to before clicking on it.

The north isn't perfect by a long shot, but I have never seen a fight involving more than two people! Why on earth would 100 people get involved in the same fight?

Football fight
Gang fight
Nightclub kicking out

Go to Widnes on a Saturday night, you'll see plenty of fights.

There have always been fights like this. Its just now the news outlets give a shit about it, so are reporting on it.

Whereabouts in London? I mean, London is huge and each area has a distinctive identity so to say “London” as one big mass is a bit misleading

East London - Bow.

Bow goes through phases of trying to appear gentrified but it has been a very scary place to walk alone for several hundred years.

MissyB1 · 04/09/2022 17:05

Doesn’t happen in the North?? Ermmm Manchester…Liverpool… that’s just for starters! Gang related violence happens in pretty much all of our big cities. It’s one of the reasons I choose not to live in a city, we still have our share of crime for sure, just not Gangs trying to kill each other.

Approx 9 million people live in London (more than New York, and a lot more than the whole of Scotland). Some will fight. My area of SW London has been calm and peaceful, no sign of trouble either today or last night (when we were walking home after visiting friends).

Do you live in London? Have you even been there? I've lived here all my life. I'm areas that lots on here would describe as " scary". You're talking absolute bollocks. All cities have crime, stabbing, murder.

That's really not true at all. It's just daft.

A man was shot dead today in Kensington High Street www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-62787797

London is a big place. Larger than most countries. Circa 9 million people, lots of different demographics. Some of it is genteel and some of it isn’t.

And gang crime exists in every large city. A 10 second Google search will confirm this:

Part and parcel, innit.

MardyBumm · 04/09/2022 17:22

-London is massive. There are safer parts and parts you know just not to go which has always been the way
-Most (not all) of the places that have featured in the news over the last few weeks are in areas of London that are not the nicest anyway. Absolutely horrible for the people that live in those areas but not surprising
-Most (not all) of the people who get hurt in these types of crime are not randomers who were minding their own business. They are usually people involved in drugs or gangs. Of course it makes it no less sad for the victim's families but most of us can go about our daily lives knowing we don't have to fear for our own personal safety

Posts like this really drive home the fact that lots of people have no concept of just how big London is. No reason why they should, but it’s interesting. OP, in terms of population, we’re bigger than quite a lot of countries.

What's happening in London? About a million things, at any given point. Some of them delightful, some of them terrifying.

Indeed. Or sense of time. The brawl was Saturday night/ early hours of this morning. Not Sunday afternoon.

London is a big place. We are in London at the moment and it has all been very calm and genteel. No mass brawls around where we are staying.

@ApolloandDaphne well thank goodness you're ok! No thoughts about reports that elsewhere there has been a large fight and a young person has died?

Instead of being concerned about what is going on in the city in which you live - presumably - you are being defensive! How laughable.

We're on holiday and dreading going home. London has just been getting worse and worse. Hopefully things improve when schools go back and it gets colder but I'm not holding out much hope. Youth centres have been closing and there's not much for kids to do as everything is so expensive. It's not the place I grew up and we're itching to get out.

Yawn. I've lived in London for nearly 30 years, including in some of the supposedly "rough" parts and have literally never seen a mass gang brawl.

I am the first to admit London has its problems but I hate the way people feel they can paint it as some huge pit of corrupt debauchery. If comments like this were made about anywhere else in the UK people would rightly cry snobbery.

Some normal people live in London and have good, lawful, respectful lives you know.

goldfinchonthelawn · 04/09/2022 17:32

I'm so shocked. I know that area very well. Lichfield Road is a quiet residential street in a pretty safe part of Tower Hamlets.

Damn right I'm defensive and why is that laughable? Do you think violence only happens in London? Never been a stabbing or a murder north of the Watford Gap?

Even if this were so, what would you expect us to do about it?

We are damned if we stay here and then damned if we move out and push your house prices up.

Some of us are just tired of the blatant distortion and melodrama about London and the fact that some people feel they can tar us all as money-grubbing murderers with impunity.

Cam22 · 04/09/2022 17:36

WTF is that supposed to mean? Some of us live quiet, lawful lives in London and know this isn't true of the vast majority of places here.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

AllTheCarsForMe · 04/09/2022 17:38

To be clear, this story came up as breaking news on my Twitter feed this afternoon, hence the afternoon thread!

Reasonable responses from people who actually live in London and hyperbole from those who don’t.

Redqueenheart · 04/09/2022 17:40

I am an East Londoner and this incident does not surprise me.

The mayor and the police have done nothing to crack down on gangs for years.

So you have all these loud ''house parties'' which often end up in disaster when someone feels ''disrespected''.

Add that to the complete lack of discipline in some schools and lazy parents who can't control their kids and you end up with this.

High time to seriously address the issue with tougher sentences, zero tolerance and more stop and search rather than trying to be politically correct.

Khan has nothing to make London safer and has let the gangs run riot for too long.
