What's happening in London? Brawl involving 100 people?

I've just seen on Sky News that a teenager has passed away after a "brawl" involving more than 100 people! What on earth is going on?

It wasn't in a particularly rough area of London

Tower Hamlets not rough? it's had a problem with gang related violence for years It's among the top 10 most dangerous boroughs in London.

TH is one of London'd most deprived boroughs.

Is that men again? Report says “people” but I wonder how many women were wielding machetes.

Good point.

Well it's definitely not all London but it does seem like inadequate policing is a big part of the problem

For years lower level crimes have been completely neglected by the police, gangs and organised crime have a huge space to operate in. Thanks Tories!

Totally.

We're on holiday and dreading going home. London has just been getting worse and worse. Hopefully things improve when schools go back and it gets colder but I'm not holding out much hope. Youth centres have been closing and there's not much for kids to do as everything is so expensive. It's not the place I grew up and we're itching to get out.

Certain parts still feel OK - Richmond, East Sheen areas-
But agree that other areas of London definitely feel edgier.

FredrikaPeri · 04/09/2022 16:25

There are nearly 9million Londoners OP. Of course most of us don't stab each other!

I think it's pretty grim up north in some areas too no?

Definitely a factor - police stations closed, officers and civilian employees numbers massively cut in the las 12 years

AllTheCarsForMe · 04/09/2022 16:31

The north isn't perfect by a long shot, but I have never seen a fight involving more than two people! Why on earth would 100 people get involved in the same fight?

The mayor of London who is ultimately in charge of policing in London has been a Labour appointee since 2016. When ever the ‘right’ attempt to institute any form of preventive policing, there are howls of rage from the Left. Tower Hamlets has been ‘Labour’ forever, I doubt they have ever had a Conservative MP or Council.

I don’t think you can blame this on ‘the Tories’, though it’s better than having to think about what might be going on.

Libertyqueen · 04/09/2022 16:33

If it’s gang related then rarely do people unrelated get hurt. I know that sounds awful but I lived on a gang boundary there was frequent violence but I walked through in the middle of it and no one would harm me. It’s massively a worry if you have teenagers particularly teenage boys.

I live in another bit of London now and saying there’s a fight in tower hamlets, may as well be a fight in Edinburgh for the impact it has. London is indeed a very big place.

Crunchymum · 04/09/2022 16:34

What incident are you talking about?

Did you read the article about last nignt and mistake that this was happening now? 😳

Crunchymum · 04/09/2022 16:36

Your thread title could be construed as 'what is going on in London right now' or a more general musing.

(I took it as the former but realise I may have got it wrong!)

MrsDanversRidesAgain · 04/09/2022 16:36

Hi libertyqueen, when the riots in Brixton took place in 1981, my mother in Norwood was wholly unaware until my brother called from Australia to check she was OK - and that was 2 miles away. As you say, it has no impact unless you're local.

You haven’t had the joys of a night out in nottingham then! I live in London, while living here I have never seen a fight involving more than two people. London is the size of what 40 large towns (by pop), I wouldn’t say violence in Boston is out of hand because ten people brawled in Lincoln, yet people seem to think that logic is different when applied to London.

Fallonangel · 04/09/2022 16:40

OP you must lead a very sheltered life in the North.
Im in Manchester and brawls of 20 or more are a normal occurrence here.
Two people fighting would be a mere scuffle here..

Our local McDonalds now has Security guards after a group of 30 kids had a knife brawl. The average age was 12!

Really? They certainly occur, whether you've seen them or not!

Cuck00soup · 04/09/2022 16:44

Male Gang violence isn't just a problem in East London. Sadly violent deaths occur throughout the UK.

It maybe a few years ago but the local weekly disco (that dates it) was closed down due to the running fights between the 16-19yr olds from one town fighting those same age from the next.

The mayor does not control police funding though, 70% of the Met budget comes from the national government and there have been large cuts in funding under the Tories. Hence fewer people and stations and capabilities.

Though the fact you think the London mayor is appointed suggests you are not a Londoner and not following things too closely.

AllTheCarsForMe · 04/09/2022 16:50

Hmmmm... this story has turned out to be much scarier than I initially thought given that many are claiming such incidents are not that uncommon!

And yes, I rarely go on "nights out" these days, which is perhaps why I've never witnessed such Street brawls.

You were unaware of the existence of gang violence until posters on an MN thread told you about it?

Spidey66 · 04/09/2022 16:52

I've lived my whole life in London, I'm 56 now.

Yes of course there are violent incidents, but if you're not in gangs or involved in drugs, the chances of you being involved are low. I live in Wood Green and work in Hackney, two areas which have reputations for being trouble spots, but as long as you're sensible and alert you're OK. The only time I've been really anxious was during the riots. I've occasionally seen fights but no weapons, I'll just move away and if necessary contact the police.

We are planning to move out, but not because of crime, we want to sell up, move somewhere cheaper and retire and live off the equity.

Fallonangel · 04/09/2022 16:52

It is scary when I feel safer in the pub than in a McDonalds at 2pm!

I live near you and have never seen a fight with 20 people in over 20 years of being here. I am definitely not sheltered.
