I've just heard that Darius has been found dead in an apartment aged 41.

Sorry, *Caudwell.

Beautiful words of tribute released today from Gerard Butler, one of his closest friends.

Also a statement from another ex girlfriend, Claire, (John Cauldwell’s ex wife; Cauldwell himself was very good friends with Darius too) who says they parted because of touring pressure but remained fantastic friends.

It says a lot about a man when literally everyone loves him.

Darius, wherever your soul is now, you left the most wonderful legacy.

I think Claire Caldwell was self serving and very inappropriate.

NiqueNique · 19/08/2022 09:43

Perhaps! I don’t know anything about her tbf.

But wow, what wonderful words Gerard wrote.

Yes that's so touching.

You honestly couldn’t ask for more in life, I don’t think, than to be remembered that way, with that much affection and appreciation.

Nothing but time will bring healing and peace to his poor family but in the meantime I hope they can find some comfort in how loved he was. They must be so proud. Life is lived in the little moments and in the richness we find there.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/08/2022 12:21

I do agree nique

We can but try to leave this life a little better than how we entered it.

For people to speak of a soul so beautifully says to me that he did just that. He loved and was loved.

Like you, I do hope his family will find comfort in that.

Very well said. This is what we should aim for as our legacy.

"For the past few days my thoughts have been with Darius's family and will continue to be so.

I found this picture a while ago taken during Pop Idol.

If there was ever an example of not giving up on your dreams then Darius is top of the pile. Driven, courageous and gentle.

My love goes to his family at this time."

We hear all these super things about people when they've gone. A lot of info about his charity work came out about George Michael after he died.

I think it's telling that they quietly get on and do these things without self-promotion. It shows they want to do good without making it all about them.

I saw this on a Facebook post today.

Two 40-something men in the news this week. Both undeniably talented. We've even seen snippets of both their writing skills (very questionable in one instance). Both in the news for all the wrong reasons whichever way you care to look at it. But what a contrast. I'd take kindness, a warm heart and determination over sleaze, money, misogyny and greed any day. You will one day read in the press that Ryan Giggs is dead. But however long he'd lived you'd never have read that Darius Campbell was a thug who couldn't keep it in his pants. #SublimeToRidiculous

xsquared · 20/08/2022 20:35

How utterly heartbreaking that his family will have to wait months before they lay him to rest. Reminds me of the same thing that George Michael's family went through because of toxicology tests.

xsquared · 25/08/2022 20:30

His funeral was today. I still can't believe he's gone. He's one year younger than me. I got very nostalgic thinking about the time he was popular and I was just entering my adult life. First job, first year of marriage.

Rest in peace Darius.

Same , I’m a year younger and it’s really made me emotional. I can’t say I was a massive fan or anything at the time but I was always aware of him if that makes sense ? He was so popular at one point, I was watching on YouTube pop idol etc and it struck me how genuinely grateful he seemed to be there and when I rewatched the final all I could see was Darius behind will young looking so genuinely happy for him and it made me really sad as he seemed so kind and genuine.

It feels strange that it’s got to me this much is it because of being a similar age I don’t know ? It’s really played on my mind which is unusual for me I just feel a real sense of sadness.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 27/08/2022 06:58

@Sparklingrainbow I'm the same age too and it's really got to me. Same with Deborah James and Sarah Harding all around same age, but there's the shock factor with Darius. I really liked him.

xsquared · 27/08/2022 08:53

Totally get you @Sparklingrainbow . Like you, I wouldn't have called myself a fan at the time, as I'd pretty much stopped following new music. For similar reasons, he has been on my mind of late and it's really saddened me.

Despite being laughed off Popstars, I was impressed atthe time with his resilience and determination when he went on to have a number 1 single with Colour blind. I preferred Rushes though, and remember it being played on the radio nearly everyday in a top 10 countdown programme after work for some time.

Looking at more recent pictures of him, he reminds a little of a young Art Malik.

Yes I remember colourblind , I was watching a few other things on YouTube and saw his song ‘live twice’ it made me cry and I couldn’t stop, I lost my dad last year to cancer very suddenly and I hadn’t cried I’d bottled it all up but I watched that and ending up crying about my dad and Darius I really don’t know why it’s affected me this much it’s like feeling sad over someone I didn’t know has allowed my mind to feel sad about someone I did ?? I’m just surprised at my own reaction to this as like I said I wasn’t even a fan but something about it has really hit home I assume it must be the age issue that’s ok I can think of .

As another poster said Deborah James and Sarah Harding too were very sad although expected maybe it’s just the unexpectedness couple with the young age that has shocked people with Darius.

It’s very sad

xsquared · 27/08/2022 21:47

Yes, Sarah Harding and Deborah Jones' passing were both very tragic too, but not unexpected. Both have achieved much and should have been progressing with their respective careers.

Sorry for your loss, Sparkling. 💐 Live Twice was written for Darius' father following a cancer diagnosis but he managed to come through. I also got teary watching the video and listening to the words. It's poignant and Darius' tears at the end were real.

Oh I didn’t know that it’s set me off again 😢 I feel so silly ! It’s taken me all this time to unbottle my feelings and because of someone I didn’t know and barely gave a second thought to until now. It’s strange how emotions and the mind works

JustDanceAddict · 28/08/2022 08:00

@Sparklingrainbow - bless you. It’s so common though and has happened to me after the deaths of both my parents. I’ve got irrationally upset over something but sort of know it’s from their deaths and not the current slightly upsetting thing.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 28/08/2022 09:53

"Got to be drugs." A friend said this last night. I was really upset at it. I don't believe that.

I don’t think so either, it’s sad when people feel the need to judge someone in the worst of circumstances 😞

Yes it’s exactly that I think it sort of opened up a grief pathway in a controlled way because it was someone I didn’t know which then allowed my mind to think it’s ok to be sad about this kind of thing
