I've just heard that Darius has been found dead in an apartment aged 41.

It’s exactly the same for me - I knew of him at the time of Pop Stars/Idol and was aware of that audition...then I had the same reaction as everyone else when he burst back onto the screen without the ponytail and facial hair, suddenly looking so handsome, and, more importantly, singing so well! It was great to watch that transformation. I think everyone admired the way he came back, and that he did achieve what he said he was going to achieve. I really felt the kindness and purity in him. But I wasn’t a die-hard fan or anything (I had two young children at the time and became a single parent so my life was all about our life at home, no time or money for concerts/music/theatre etc), but I remembered hearing his songs and over the years I checked back on him every so often to see what he was up to. He’s really the only person from that cohort that I've done that with.

As I said before he’s a similar age to me and I think 40+ is when you start to contemplate your own mortality a bit more. There’s also the poignancy of his having survived the car crash and the sepsis, only to sadly pass away anyway. That feels very sad and must be very hard for his family to process.

Oh dear Lord, I have something in both eyes after reading the statement from Gerard Butler.

"Got to be drugs." A friend said this last night. I was really upset at it. I don't believe that.

I also hate it when people jump to that conclusion straight away. It's so insensitive and disrespectful.

Don't feel silly @Sparklingrainbow. The song clearly speaks to you, and has allowed you to grieve over your own loss.

I hadn't realised that Darius had 2 near death experiences @NiqueNique , and I don't know whether any of you believe in a higher force, but I can't help thinking that when this happens, someone is telling you that your work on Earth isn't done yet.

It makes his eventual passing even more sad, as he was so ambitious and wanted to give something back, if that makes sense?

Oh goodness, I dont really understand that. Taking it recreationally then? Never heard of it used in that way before.

This was a very popular street drug many years ago .. such a shame

NiqueNique · 10/09/2022 11:45

I know nothing about this drug. However he had broken his neck in a car accident and had almost died from sepsis. I suppose it’s quite likely he would have been left with pain issues. If it’s a pain relief drug then it’s quite possible he was taking it as directed and simply accidentally overdosed, isn’t it.

In any case it changes nothing about the man he was and how he will be remembered by those who loved him.

xsquared · 10/09/2022 12:58

We don't know whether he took it for recreational or medical purposes though.

Either way, it doesn't change my opinion of him or make it less tragic the way he went.

IrisVersicolor · 10/09/2022 17:33

I don’t know anything about him but I read that he had been staying in a flat near a Mayo clinic. That short term residents in those flats stay there when having treatment at the clinic. Is there any detail that this was actually his home? I’m wondering if he was staying there to have treatment for some health/pain issue?

*Campbell Danesh’s family said he had been suffering from chronic pain at the time of his death, following a car accident in 2010 in Spain that left him with a broken neck.

“The results of medical examinations have confirmed that Darius’s death was an accident caused by chloroethane, which is used to treat pain and that tragically lead to respiratory arrest,” a statement read.

“Darius was suffering from chronic neck pain following a car accident in 2010.

“We would like to thank everyone for their love and kindness, and ask that the family’s privacy is maintained during this difficult time.”*
