Why are the all kids wearing Nirvana t shirts?

I'm seeing them everywhere, usually in bright pink and purple and acid colours. Are the kids listening to Nirvana now or do they think it's the name of a fashion brand?

DD is 14 and loves Nirvana. I think Spotify makes it a lot easier for kids to discover non-current music.

Bangkokbaby · 11/08/2022 09:25

I've noticed this too, but it's usually quite young girls, who I don't think would have discovered Nirvana on Spotify yet!

AmberGer · 11/08/2022 09:26

I said exactly the same thing to dh last week, not just kids, I've seen people of all ages!

I wondered that too. Not even teenagers. Plus babies in band t shirts. Confused

Numbat2022 · 11/08/2022 09:28

I think they're just fashionable, the same as you used to get Motorhead or Rolling Stones t-shirts in H&M. Now it's the turn of the music of our youth 😖

CaveMum · 11/08/2022 09:30

Kids like to think they’ve “discovered” bands from before their time. The most amusing incident I’ve heard was a friend whose teenage DD patronisingly informed her that she’d stumbled across a really cool band that she (my friend) would have never heard of. The band was Fleetwood Mac 🤣🤣

Needmorelego · 11/08/2022 09:30

They sell them in H+M and Primark. Teeny tiny sizes and cheap.
My 14 year old has 3 different ones. She also got an awesome Guns and Roses t-shirt the other day. I said "Ooh...Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty". She stared at me blankly 🤣🙄
Gotta confess.....I am slightly jealous of her fashion sense at the moment.

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 11/08/2022 09:31

My 5 year old asks our Google speakers to play Pink Floyd. They came on a playlist dh was listening to, ds decided he liked it, and asked us who it was. Spotify has made music so much more accessible to everyone. I can well believe that they listen to Nirvana on various streaming platforms.

DinosApple · 11/08/2022 09:31

I was away a few weeks ago on a dig and heard two 16yo talking about 'have you heard of an iPod shuffle?' (I had mine on me 😂. Handily small!)

Naturally that lead to a what bands do you like convo. They'd both heard of Nirvana, thought they were great and were super impressed that a mate working with us had been to see them in the early 90s. Definitely upped us slightly from the old people are dull vibe (I'm late 30s, mate is 50s.)

Realistically I think it's a bit of both though. And band t-shirts have always been cool.

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 09:32

Probably because Urban Outfitters sell them.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 11/08/2022 09:32

My 19 and 11 year old listen to them. The 11 year old has borrowed my nirvana t-shirt a few times

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2022 09:33

i would love to ask the next 7/8 year old I see in a Nirvana t shirt what they know about the band. Obviously can’t do that though! 😂

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2022 09:35

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 09:32

Probably because Urban Outfitters sell them.

That shop gives me the rage. V overpriced and chaotic but the DC as teenagers loved it.

Saisong · 11/08/2022 09:35

My 15yo lives in band t-shirts, funny thing is though they are mostly from my generation - AC/DC, Queen, Guns'n'Roses, and yes Nirvana, plus a few more recent/current like Foos, Green Day and Chillis. She does listen to them all though. There is a dearth of decent modern music it seems?

I do think though that the band t-shirt thing is also a current 'look' - they are being sold in fashion chains, not just via Merch suppliers.

Ziggyisthebestdogintheworld · 11/08/2022 09:40

I remember dd telling me about a really cool band that I was too uncool to ever heard of let alone listened to
it was nirvana

Her boyfriend was telling me about a ‘really cool vintage band’
had I ever heard of them/their music?
it was take that

they both almost passed out when I showed them my Rolling Stones tee shirt-‘mum was really cool-when she wasn’t old’

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2022 09:43

I’m guessing the bands have to be a bit edgy. Not seen a young person in a new romantic group’s 80s t shirt. Sadly ☹️

ShesThunderstorms · 11/08/2022 09:45

I put my very young (3.5 and 20m) kids in bad T-shirts of the bands I love in the hopes they'll grow up and appreciate their music. Appreciate that's probably not going to happen but I think they look really cute! My son has a Beatles one he loves as his favourite song is yellow submarine.

balalake · 11/08/2022 09:45

At least it's proper music from the last century. I'd be worried if they were liking Jive Bunny or Bewitched, or some of the other bad karaoke artists.

Same seems to have applied with Joy Division t-shirts.

lurchermummy · 11/08/2022 09:45

Probably H&M or Primark, my daughter has an Iron Maiden one and Nirvana. Also heavy metal is currently "in" because of Stranger Things.

hellywelly3 · 11/08/2022 09:46

My DS 19 had a slip knot tshirt on and it was from a band I wouldn’t of heard of 😂

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 11/08/2022 09:46

Well if they have discovered Nirvana it can only be a good thing.

Squirrelsnut · 11/08/2022 09:49

Something InThe Way is heavily used in the new Batman film so Nirvana are back in the spotlight. Much like the Stranger Things/Kate Bush thing.

Allmarbleslost · 11/08/2022 09:49

Because they're being sold everywhere. We're having a 90s revival aren't we? My 13 year old was astonished that I'd heard of Oasis 😂

Squirrelsnut · 11/08/2022 09:50

DS (15) asked me a bit shocked if I knew there was a band called the Butthole Surfers the other day.😄

BrutusMcDogface · 11/08/2022 09:59

My daughter picked up a pair of nirvana pjs in primark the other day. She bloody hates nirvana! Her dad and I like rock/indie/grunge and she very much does not! 🤣 I said absolutely no way was she allowed to get them. I would let her if she loved the music!
