Why are the all kids wearing Nirvana t shirts?

I'm seeing them everywhere, usually in bright pink and purple and acid colours. Are the kids listening to Nirvana now or do they think it's the name of a fashion brand?

@RhubarbFairy , I'm with you. Only nirvana song I liked was heart shape box.
I'm a big Alice in chains fan. No body seems to of heard of them and don't know why.
Loved the Seattle grunge scene

Now is where I actually admit to going to see ugly kid Joe at Manchester poly

Courtney Love claimed Heart-Shaped Box was a song written about her vagina. Which is nice.

Oinkypig · 11/08/2022 22:01

Not quite the same but in the theme I have a few small Glastonbury T-shirts from the 2000s that I bought for my niece, she wore them and then the rest of the younger nieces/nephews and mine all wore them. I’ve carefully packed them away for 🤞 some grand n/n and grandchildren to wear in the distant distant future. Also planning a 3 generation trip to see Bruce Springsteen somewhere in Europe. I think it’s a nice way to share music.

Solidarity!

I've heard of Alice In Chains but would struggle to name a song.

I use Amazon Music and can see myself going down a wormhole.

Its not quite the same, but you've reminded me of something similar when I was 14.

Boyzone has just released Father and Son. I was in the car with my mum singing away. My mum then joined in. She knew all the words!
I was outraged I think the words "how do You know the words?" came out of my mouth
She thought this was hilarious and explained it was a Cat Stevens song.

I remember turning the radio off. 😁

I remember buying a ‘shocking’ song (Roy chubby browns ‘who the fuck is Alice?I mean it SWEARS-the clue is in the name of the song!)

brought it home, grinning like a cat with ten dicks and slapped it into the CD player, hoping to shock my unshockable dad

my horror when he didn’t bat an eyelid-he just said ‘I remember this from the 70’s’ and started DANCING to it (true dad dancing to boot)

I slunk off in the only way a teenager can…

I know the answer to this. I could tell you, but...nevermind.

I bought my DD a Nirvana T-shirt but really wanted one myself, it was £10 from George at Asda so obviously. She knows who Nirvana is because I have forced her to listen to them for all of my childhood.😁

Maybe I can pluck up the courage to buy myself some band T-shirts and relive my youth instead of wearing boring and sensible clothes.

It’s cos of stranger things.

this is how I dress in usual life and it’s bizarre as hell that I’m suddenly fashionable. Like genuinely

I am yet to see a Kate Bush t shirt...

ThisIsAddiction · 11/08/2022 22:47

Alice In Chains were brilliant. ‘Would’ is one of my most played on Spotify. Layne Staley was another troubled soul.
80s rock was my thing really but the 90s did bring some wonderful bands.

Sandysandwich · 11/08/2022 22:48

I remember wearing a Nirvana shirt to school (around 2015, from h&m) on a non uniform day, and our PE teacher said in a lovely patronising voice, 'oh your a Nirvana fan are you? What your favourite song? Know any albums? Go on who's the front man??'

Like its Nirvana not some secret underground band that nobody has ever heard of. I liked the music and the band and the shirt was cool, he was a knob.

Weird innit?
for the first time ever I can indulge my rather odd tastes in most high street stores rather than needing to visit EMP or other alternative shops.

Not sure I’ll ever get used to seeing kiss shirts in Tesco, especially considering the absolute nightmare it was to buy one back in 1984.

Smallorangecat · 11/08/2022 22:53

I bought a nirvana t-shirt from recently because It was very similar to one I wore as a teenager 25-30 years ago. My 11 year old told me her friend had the same one. I have inadvertently become fashionable for the first time in my life!

On the flip side of that. I used to go to school in the mid 80s in my Sabbath or Motörhead shirts. I had a physics teacher who seemed quite cool and would ask about my band shirts given that some of them were from before my time.
One day he pulled me back after a lesson and handed me a bag, it contained a copy of Pink Floyds The Wall and a copy of Dark side of The moon. He told me to go away and see what I thought of that.

I loved them and we very often chatted over a shared love of several eras of music. Always think of him when I listen to Dark Side. Rather than ridicule he encouraged, and at a time where a teenage girl listening to this stuff was pretty rare. Fair to say I was bullied quite a bit for my tastes.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 11/08/2022 23:12

Ds age 7 is getting very in to some classic 80's rock. I was so proud of him being able to identify sweet child of mine on the radio within 3 seconds, so I guess the GNR baby grow paid off. Then again he also loves baby shark, so who knows what he will end up like!

BarnacleNora · 11/08/2022 23:13

My DS had a nirvana t shirt at about a year old. He now has one at 8 years old. This was because when I used to put Nirvana on in the car he used to 'sing' along in a kind of baby grunt/baaaaaah sound and nod his head appreciatively (always loved a strong drumbeat and electric guitar did my DS!) When he got older and I was still listening to Nirvana I used to tell him what he did as a baby and he loved the story and now just loves Nirvana so I got him another t shirt.

My other DS is more of a musicals and strong female vocalist fan. He has an Elsa dress and has been to see the musical in London fully Elsa'd up. If he wants an Ariana t shirt I'll happily get him one. Kate bush might be harder to find in his size (although maybe not with her recent rise in popularity again!)

I used to play GnR to my children when they were much younger (now 9 & 11). I was merrily playing the Use Your Illusion 2 album, congratulating myself on introducing them to a classic when Get in the Ring came on. I had forgotten just how expletive it was and launched myself across the room to stop it as Axl screamed out about sucking his fucking dick.

I now only play them the radio edits of GnR songs.

Play her the acoustic version of Jeremy and if she dares not to like it you need to pack her bags.

I've played her 10- great album - "rubbish" she said
She's partial to a bit of Faith No More though 😀

Not a massive AIC fan though DS plays them. I quite like Rooster though 🤔

powershowerforanhour · 12/08/2022 00:15

When the kids are accosted by music nerds and asked in accusing fashion about their favourite album , do they get extra 90s retro points for answering "I'd have to say the Best of the Beatles" in their best Alan Partridge voice?

weebarra · 12/08/2022 07:32

If it gets kids listening to music, that's great. DS1, who is 14, has very eclectic taste - Queen, The Smiths, and newer stuff like Public Service Broadcasting.
His dad and I are still big music fans and definitely children if the 90's. I was into indie and DH was grungier.
DD is 8 and loves Wet Leg, she's heard them a lot on 6 music.
Wish I'd kept my band tees!

weebarra · 12/08/2022 07:34

Oh yes, and while congratulating myself on nurturing their music taste, DS1's first gig was Little Mix when he was about 10!

Head creeps followed by nothing song.
Alice in chains 3rd album is sad if you understand it's about layens addiction
His voice was amazing.
Saw them in concert when I was 15. Bloody amazing live.

I have many an AIC T-shirt and planning my tattoo
Im 45

drinkingwineoutofamug · 12/08/2022 08:57

@Eyesofdisarray tell your DS to listen to the mtv unplugged version.

Nutshell is an amazing song but by the time they did the mtv, it was like layne singing at his own funeral.
Sludge factory is another good one.

And if people like laynes voice check out mad season, his other band names after opium season

Yes! Thanks @drinkingwineoutofamug He has listened to it as he loves AIC!! He's often telling me that he has superior taste in music 🙄 Love most 'unplugged' versions - Pearl Jam's is fab. Nirvana's is one of my favourites. Apparently Kurt Cobain was quite pleased with his performance
And Stone Temple Pilots- hence my username 😊
