Why are the all kids wearing Nirvana t shirts?

TheWelshposter · 11/08/2022 09:21

I'm seeing them everywhere, usually in bright pink and purple and acid colours. Are the kids listening to Nirvana now or do they think it's the name of a fashion brand?

I mean, if you liked the Ramones you wouldn't usually talk about albums.

I'm just saying that some muso types do.

tigger1001 · 11/08/2022 12:27

To actually ask people what albums they know because of a t-shirt makes the person asking:-

A- a music snob
And
B- a bit of a prat

Probably.

But this is the gauntlet you run when you wear a band t-shirt because you like the t-shirt rather than the band.

cause they think it's cool

minou123 · 11/08/2022 12:33

Its not quite the same, but you've reminded me of something similar when I was 14.

Boyzone has just released Father and Son. I was in the car with my mum singing away. My mum then joined in. She knew all the words!
I was outraged I think the words "how do You know the words?" came out of my mouth
She thought this was hilarious and explained it was a Cat Stevens song.

I remember turning the radio off. 😁

giffyg · 11/08/2022 12:34

@minou123 😆

giffyg · 11/08/2022 12:36

my dad loves the RS & I did a full on Kevin "I hate my life" strop when he didn't buy me a ticket to a concert. I was outraged that he was going when there was no way it would appreciate them like I did, teenagers are such muppets 😁

tigger1001 · 11/08/2022 12:36

"Probably.

No, it really does.

Plenty people love the music but couldn't name an album. I include myself in that. I love the ramones. Could name several songs. Couldn't name an album.

And certainly since streaming has come along that will become even more true as you won't necessarily know which album a song comes from if it's just on a playlist.

Listening to playlists rather than albums has introduced me to artists I might not have listened to before.

To actually ask the question just makes the person asking the question come across as a prat.

Why would anyone question someone like that? Does it actually matter if they like the t-shirt rather than the band?

giffyg · 11/08/2022 12:37

90s were the best tbf

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/08/2022 12:38

Our older (teen) kids love The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division, The The, etc. They think they are being cool and edgy. Equally, they were appalled to discover this was ‘our’ teen music, and that took the edge off it a bit

😂yep, the look of begrudging respect when l said I’d seen The Smiths. Then telling me what ‘Indie’ is, and shutting up when l said ‘Yeah l know, my generation invented it😂

Comefromaway · 11/08/2022 12:39

My son is 18 and plays in a band and they cover a lot of 'old' music in addition to their own original songs. Toto, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Tears for Fears, Genesis!!! I love it!

SizzlerFizzler · 11/08/2022 12:41

I'm not arguing with you @tigger1001 but there's no snob like a music snob. Surely you're aware of this?

Someone can wear their Fatima Mansions t=shirt because they think it looks cool but at some point they'll probably attract an ardent Fatima Mansions fan who wants to chat about the band and then be a bit Confused that's it's just about the aesthetics.

You can be annoyed about it if you like though.

Change123today · 11/08/2022 12:41

I would love to say my daughter has great taste in music…but they cheap in primark.

ShirleyJackson · 11/08/2022 12:43

My friend’s lovely 16 year old DD asked me if I knew what the Reading Festival was the other day Grin

Absolutely this.

I love rock/metal/punk/ska and the amount of men who will sniggeringly ask me ‘what’s your favourite song/album then?’ if I’m wearing a band T-shirt as though women can’t enjoy anything other than pop music does my tits in.

Music is for everyone, so many snobby idiots who want to gatekeep stuff because they think they’re cool. Who cares if you liked Kate Bush before Stranger Things, she got to number 1! If you really liked KB you’d be happy for hear and her music revival.

Nirvana was one of the first CDs I ever bought, I played it on repeat and drove my brother mad. It doesn’t bother me if a child is wearing a T-shirt and doesn’t know who the band are, hats off to Nirvana for the extra royalties.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/08/2022 12:46

I hear ya @CockingASnook! I had a great Death to the Pixies t shirt that I absolutely loved and wore nearly every day as a teenager. I've googled and you can still get them!

My 6 year old went through a Motley Crue phase, he's now into Beastie Boys, he's got great taste in music Grin

justasking111 · 11/08/2022 12:47

I remember my late baby born 2001 as a teenager being aghast that I know who Queen and Freddie are 🤣🤣

justasking111 · 11/08/2022 12:48

He's 21 now last week his dad introduced him to Tubular Bells 🤣

SwimmingOnEggshells · 11/08/2022 12:49

I agree @Damnautocorrect, I've discovered some great current music, I'm always discovering new music I like. People need to open their minds Grin
Spotify radio feature is brilliant for bringing you down various musical warrens.

Snowraingain · 11/08/2022 12:50

My teenagers love Nirvana.

RayKray · 11/08/2022 12:50

@tigger1001 totally agree. It's the music snobbery I totally remember from the 90s (usually laced with sexism too) that I wished had died and stayed in the 90s. I really hope the Spotify generation would just dismiss such outdated questioning.

I was big into music back then too, but my brain isn't wired to remember names/tracks/years etc. Can sing along with every nuance of the song though.

I was watching pixies recently (note the missing definite article for those that like to one up others on pixies for this). There loads of young people I doubt could name all the tracks and sing along as I could, but it was wonderful to share it with them.

Something InThe Way is heavily used in the new Batman film so Nirvana are back in the spotlight. Much like the Stranger Things/Kate Bush thing.

Yep he was stunned the old man was a Kate Bush fan

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 11/08/2022 12:53

My DS 12 lives in band t-shirts. He loves Nirvana, Guns + Roses, ACDC, Green Day, Foo Fighters etc. He's in a band though. He spends his time either drumming or hanging out in HMVbrowsing records. I think he's a misplaced child of the 80's.
His music teacher is made up with his musical taste, he reckons he's obviously being brung up proper 😂

Oh that's absolutely me!

My friend and I can talk in music lyrics but just don't ask me the name of the album it comes from 😂😂.
