A lot of places will have to shut for a few days a week soon. I can this happening everywhere this winter

Roussette · 26/08/2022 07:07

I want someone in Government, and particularly the two candidates to explain to me why there can't be a windfall tax on Energy Companies. They are making windfall profits so why can't there be a windfall tax?
The energy companies have either welcomed it, or said they are not adverse.
4 of the big ones have said it will not affect re-investment

So why?

I know it's unusual, but we are in unusual times.

Roussette · 26/08/2022 07:08

*averse. Not adverse

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 07:11

They have already had a windfall tax on the energy companies: the 400 per household etc
It wasn't called this, but this is what it was
Maybe they need another o e?

Roussette · 26/08/2022 07:22

Yes, what was it called? I think the Government are frightened of the words 'windfall tax'.

Just hearing the energy price cap rise to £3,549. We know how this will affect the poorer in our society, pensioners who rely on their state pension to live on, but also small businesses. I fear many will close.

And here we are in the longest leadership campaign in history and all I see on my Twitter feed are idiot MP's saying 'I voted for Liz Truss' blah blah blah.

And not one Minister prepared to go on any Breakfast news channel to talk about this.

Piggywaspushed · 26/08/2022 07:45

Ooh, I just saw this on Twitter. It has an acronym like EBSS... Energy Bill Support Stuff?

Notonthestairs · 26/08/2022 09:23

The news is seriously grim.

I know why they are holding back from announcing support- to give Truss an earlier bounce - but leaving voters hanging for political expediency in these circumstances is pretty low.

Truss insinuating Macron may be our enemy 🙄 Utterly pathetic.

Notonthestairs · 26/08/2022 09:24

And there isn't a single Minister doing the rounds.

Cornettoninja · 26/08/2022 09:26

Truss insinuating Macron may be our enemy

almost makes you suspect they’re still in hoc to Russia… directly or indirectly.

Notonthestairs · 26/08/2022 09:32

I think they've realised the need to develop new/old enemies now.

It was a pretty ridiculous question but it was asked for a reason.

We won't ever get to the bottom of Russian money & the Conservatives but I'd take a bet it's still flowing in to their coffers.

Blossomtoes · 26/08/2022 09:50

Notonthestairs · 26/08/2022 09:24

There hasn’t been since Johnson’s “resignation”. They’re out even pretending to be accountable now. Good thing in some ways, Rachel Reeves was magnificent on R4 this morning with no whinging Tory voice to say she was wrong. They can’t have a windfall tax because it’s apparently not Conservative - even though Thatcher had one.

Roussette · 26/08/2022 10:21

Truss insinuating Macron may be our enemy 🙄 Utterly pathetic.

She is ridiculous, trying to channel Thatcher and be all tough. It doesn't work. She just sounds daft. The other day at a hustings she said she would be prepared to press the nuclear button. And got all pork market apple grinny when everyone clapped!

She is going to be in for a very rough ride when this price cap kicks in in Oct.

Rachel Reeves was good on BBC this morning too.

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 10:37

They have had a windfall tax imposed on them already. They just called a different name. The £400 will be welcome, but it won't go that far. That has cost the companies billions already.
I bet that the energy companies have told the government that they won't tolerate another one at the moment. They pull the strings don't they ? Plus we appear to be leaderless too at the moment.
They did have a cobra meeting about it last month with the CEOs , but I don't recall what happened there. Clearly they won't change their minds on this.
Martin Lewis on lbc now , he sounds heartbroken tbh.

Blossomtoes · 26/08/2022 10:45

The energy companies are asking the government to do as Labour suggests and freeze the cap 80s. But of course neither Truss nor the zombie government will listen. If a further windfall tax was imposed they’d just have to pay it, regardless of whether they wanted it or not.

Roussette · 26/08/2022 10:58

At the Cobra meeting which I think BJ attended (and that made front page news) it was a case of 'we'll get through it'. Ironic, given MPs energy bills are paid, with no limit, even for 2nd homes.

As for Martin Lewis, love him... poor bloke had to come off Twitter for a day or two, because of all the abuse he was getting.

What have we become as a country, that's what I say to myself.

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 11:09

Those who can absorb the costs will get through this : it'll be the ones who can't that I worry about the most and so are most people I know.

Roussette · 26/08/2022 11:53

This tweet sums it up... (I think it is appalling no Government Minister would come out and speak today. I have known for days that this price cap would be announced 7am Friday morning. Where are they? #AWOL trending on Twitter)

The bloke in charge has been AWOL for as long as i can remember and the rest of them are having a "who's the biggest fascist" competition

jgw1 · 26/08/2022 12:20

The thing is, although not many are prepared to say it Truss is right about Macron.

He is French, used to be an investment banker and did not go to Oxford.

We know we don't like the French because they are French, we don't like investment bankers today because Sunak is one. The greatest Prime Ministers this country have had have all gone to Oxford, Thatcher, Johnson of course, and Truss, along with Churchill who was born near Oxford and visited as a child.

I did not vote for Brexit in order for the Prime Minister to be friends with someone French. It takes a great Brexit Remain campaigner like Truss to point out why so many of us voted for Brexit.

Roussette · 26/08/2022 12:27

😂🤣

What a classy response.

Emmanuel Macron: “The United Kingdom is a friendly nation, regardless of its leaders, sometimes in spite of its leaders”.

It’s somewhat comforting to think that people can see past the bedlam…

I’m really feeling it all today. I had to force myself to listen to Martin Lewis on LBC - I need to know what the reality is but I’m not sure it’s ‘helpful’ to anyone. There aren’t any steps that anyone can take to insulate themselves from this.

I ended up looking up news from the Greek crisis, children sent to orphanages because their parents simply couldn’t afford to keep them.

This is certainly proving to be the decade that puts the notion ‘that’ll never happen here’ firmly aside Sad

newnamethanks · 26/08/2022 13:03

I'm feeling seriously despairing. Martin Lewis isn't joking yet the clowns are about to elbow their way back in to number 10. I can't see a way forward for the country at all without clearing the whole bunch of them out but how? Grim times ahead for all of us.

I don't know which thread you mean, so I guess it is not me. I shall search for it.

@jgw1 it's "We must endure high bills. Proud".
Sadly appears it may be serious.

DowningStreetParty · 26/08/2022 13:58

In this Martin Lewis video he sounds absolutely broken. He says, rightly this is a catastrophe
we must have government help, lives will be lost without it
www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-62685067
please everyone, write to your MP, Parliament must be recalled to begin to deal with this emergency.
