New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

That’s very thought provoking @Roussette. I so hope he’s right.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2022 17:40

I'm thankful we are not at war and I haven't had to leave my home behind, but what is going to hit us all is going to be bad and I find it hard to comprehend that he could compare the two really ( although having high energy costs is because of the war , so they are linked of course I guess )
It was just a crass way of explaining it people.
Maybe Trying to make people think that it's not as bad as it could be ? ..
It's Ok if you can absorb the costs , but many won't be able to that easily. Especially small businesses as well as the public sector ( schools etc) too.
It's so sad that many places who weathered the pandemic might go under because of fuel costs :(
Tough times ahead

borntobequiet · 25/08/2022 18:17

Totally agree with that Twitter thread, Rousette.
A lot of us on here have seen it coming, though unclear about exactly how. But as soon as the Referendum was won by Leave, this was going to be the ultimate outcome - the destruction of the Tory party - because the lies and contradictions of Brexit mean that it could never be any sort of success.
It will be interesting to see if the Union survives the debacle. I reckon 60% chance it will.

Notonthestairs · 25/08/2022 18:18

Thanks for that thread Rousette. Very interesting.

I don't see the party splitting as I think it it is quite far along the process of absorbing the Brexit/UKIP activists and voters. Even if MPs don't trust Truss their constituency parties seem to like her. I think they will continue to make the EU the big bad Wolf despite being out of the EU. Many people lap it up.

Moderate Conservatives will be homeless.

And I think Johnson will be back.

ClaudineClare · 25/08/2022 18:18

The issues with the energy costs started before the war. Don't fall for that rhetoric from Johnson.

Roussette · 25/08/2022 18:19

I personally don't think Johnson will be back. He's too toxic.

Notonthestairs · 25/08/2022 18:20

"It will be interesting to see if the Union survives the debacle. I reckon 60% chance it will."

Yes this is a big question.

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 18:22

I think N Ireland’s on its way. Given the Tories’ complete refusal to sort it out properly and the majority vote there being to remain, I think another 15 to 20 years will see a united Ireland.

Notonthestairs · 25/08/2022 18:29

I don't want to see Johnson back but I think Truss is going to be forced to make some very unpopular decisions. I'm not convinced she'll have the same sort of backing from the Telegraph and the Mail etc that Johnson enjoyed.

And people have short memories and there is a ready made story (and it is fictional) that Johnson was brought down rather than bringing it on himself.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2022 18:48

The daily Mail comments are not that glowing about Boris Johnson at times.
Although I take the point that LT will get all the blame when the bad stuff hits the fans ( as it will by the end of this year ) not Boris.

Yeah. People seem to be ignoring the 12% rise that happened from October 2021.

'WARNING... it shows BJ on holiday in his shorts, not a pretty sight'

What a sneery thing to say. Do you look great in your shorts?!

The picture is lovely, it shows him happy and relaxed with his wife and friends despite constant media attacks and slurs.

His wife appears to be giving him a handjob through his shorts. I wouldn’t describe that as “lovely” Envy

newnamethanks · 25/08/2022 19:48

Johnson will be back, probably, when LT has screwed up and a desperate Tory Party nation begs him to return to give us all a good Borising for the second time. He won't be concerned about paying bills. He doesn't pay his own bills, as we've seen, he scrounges up the costs from wealthy friends, so why would it matter to him?

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2022 19:51

A good Borising :(
That sounds really horrible!

Lonelycrab · 25/08/2022 20:10

Although I do think Johnson will try and come back, it can only really happen when Truss has hit the rails. That will probably happen, maybe fairly soon, but by that point things will be even bleaker than they are already.

At which point people will not want to look backwards, to the failure that bought us to this point. I don’t think nostalgia will go in our squatter pm, Johnson’s favour.

GoTeamRocket · 25/08/2022 20:31

I listen to Times Radio, which is so transparently right wing. They have been supporting Truss from the outset but now it does seem to be pushing the narrative that the general public want Boris Johnson back. There is a clear agenda which presenters are being asked/told/encouraged to follow.

But, this winter is going to be tough. Most people I know don't have any spare money at the end of the month now. People will need medical treatmentv due to poor diet / inadequate heating.

The NHS has been broken this summer, with patients not getting adequate or any emergency care. What will winter look like?

On top of that, this time last year, they had a massive flu campaign, which was so sensible. This year there is nothing. There is no information on the NHS website about how the covid booster will be rolled out. So, more people will become ill with flu and covid.

The heady days of 'eat out to help out' are long gone. The general population is going to be cold, worried and in some cases hungry. I really hope BJ with his champagne lifestyle will not be wanted by the general population.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2022 20:46

They can't afford anything now. So any campaigns will be out
The new health Secretary was having a grilling on look East about the kings lynn hospital with a crumbling roof. He didn't have much to say really . Same old platitudes

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 20:59

A vaccination campaign costs buttons, particularly now most of it goes on social media. I used to run a flu vaccination campaign every year when I worked in the NHS, you just resurrect last year’s and tweak the details. We never started in August though so there’s probably one starting next month.

Hopefully the Tories will be beyond redemption by the spring. If we thought Johnson was bad, just watch Truss.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2022 21:02

Oh ok! I just assumed that costs would put them off doing any campaigns etc.

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 21:05

They can’t afford not to 80s. A really bad flu season would be catastrophic now.

the80sweregreat · 25/08/2022 21:48

Yes, I'll get the flu jab this year

Novum · 25/08/2022 23:08

If Boris came back, it is virtually inevitable that, sooner or later, we'd reach the same point where, after a build-up of disasters and lies, he does something so egregious that his colleagues all say they can't work with him any more. Does either he or the Tory party really want to risk that?

tobee · 26/08/2022 00:10

Lessons need to be learned. But I'm sure that's too much effort.

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/08/2022 00:36

I couldn't give a stuff about who runs the conservative party now, I just want them gone and hope enough pressure can be brought for a general election ASAP so the grown ups can start sorting out the mess.

borntobequiet · 26/08/2022 06:51

I’ve had a text from my GP already about an autumn flu vaccination. However I normally go to Boots as there’s more flexibility in appointments - but my local Boots is shut half the time now as they can’t get staff. They open late and close early, and shut for an hour or more at lunchtime. There are disconsolate queues outside almost every day. It’s astonishing. When you do get in there are gaps on the shelves, like the local Asda. We’re gradually slipping into the sort of situation that I last remember in Eastern Europe some decades ago.
We really are in a shocking state.
