New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

Driving home from holiday earlier and listening to Sunak on the radio.

As much as he's a Tory and I have issues with both candidates I can't deny he's a very good public speaker and much more sound and able to answer questions than Truss.

I may not agree with what he says but at least he can explain clearly his rationale.

the80sweregreat · 22/08/2022 14:47

It is a shame that Rishi Sunak won't win this leadership battle

Lonelycrab · 22/08/2022 15:07

Agree about Sunak being the better of the two, far more diplomatic and statesman like than Truss, I’d much rather he’d be at the helm than her. I suppose there is always the outside chance Truss might somehow drop a clanger or majorly mess up in the next week or two by putting her foot in it, I expect those around her are telling her to keep as quiet as possible to avoid this, now it seems like she’s got it in the bag.

Blossomtoes · 22/08/2022 15:10

I agree that Sunak’s the better of the two by a long way. I imagine most of the votes have been cast now so, unless they’re all lying to the pollsters, I think she’s got it.

TheABC · 22/08/2022 15:19

I am a little in awe that no matter how bad the situation is, the current tory party finds a way to make it worse.

Jason118 · 22/08/2022 16:30

Sunak never had a hope in hell of winning. One reason only, I'm sure you can guess..........

tobee · 22/08/2022 17:02

Just been doing my YouGov daily chat (I need to get out more, yes). Barrister's strikes, economy/leadership contest and sewage dumping.

I concluded that we are deeply in the shit.

I'll get my coat.

the80sweregreat · 22/08/2022 17:52

The sewage situation is awful yet the ones in charge and the shareholders are all fine.
Everything that is wrong with just about everything lately.

newnamethanks · 22/08/2022 18:28

On a more cheerful note, Daily Express journalists planning to strike @. I fear that can't be true. I really hope it is. If they picket I'm going to throw rotten tomatoes at them. They deserve it.

the80sweregreat · 22/08/2022 18:31

I always thought that journalists earned a mega salary ! I'm clearly wrong ( unless it's a strike about something else )

tobee · 22/08/2022 18:35

Think journalists get a mixed salary, some very high, some quite low and some self employed.

tobee · 22/08/2022 18:36

Be good if they were going on strike at the Express as they were sick of defending the indefensible. Seems unlikely though.

newnamethanks · 22/08/2022 18:47

They've rejected 3 per cent, want more. You'd think they would know that they simply have to work harder. Like their hideous 'newspaper' has told so many others to do so often. Solidarity and all that but I couldnt bring myself to care one jot about them.

I don't know why this has annoyed me so much. But it has.

WARNING... it shows BJ on holiday in his shorts, not a pretty sight

BJ and Carrie with her gay boys (her words, not mine), on holiday, having a blast, with one of them being Henry Newman who BJ pretended he was interviewing in the flat on ABBA night. You know... the abba party the Met has admitted they didn't (and probably should have) investigated.

newnamethanks · 23/08/2022 08:24

Can't comment on that, my vocabulary is now exhausted and I've used up all known expletives in every possible combination. And, as Boris the Bastard and the Lady B and Court frolic, K Kwarteng, prospective Chancellor, plans to allow people to 'choose' whether to use fuel or not. Full laissez faire.

DowningStreetParty · 23/08/2022 08:50

Boris Johnson said he’d make no major decisions (… despite the cost of living emergency and the need to have major decisions immediately…) so instead we have this protracted Tory leadership contest and Johnson lingers on pointlessly as a ‘caretaker’ PM purely to spare himself the shame of actually resigning. Just what the country needs Hmm

Except: the Daily Mail report that actually Johnson HAS been making big decisions in secret- when he wants to.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11131747/amp/Boris-Johnson-secretly-approves-funding-30billion-Sizewell-C-nuclear-power-station.html?ico=amp_articleRelated_with_images

So I can only take from that, that the cruel Conservative insufficient action on the cost of living emergency (which will actually kill people who can’t both heat and eat, and which is causing unbelievable stress to British people) as Boris goes on his two summer holidays, must mean that he and his cabinet don’t really WANT to help ordinary people to be able to eat or heat their homes.

DowningStreetParty · 23/08/2022 08:51

I seem to have forgotten why we don’t deserve to have a general election after being hugely let down by Boris Johnson, and why instead in these unprecedented economic times, we still have to wait weeks for a new PM to be appointed by Conservative Party members only…?

SueSaid · 23/08/2022 08:56

'WARNING... it shows BJ on holiday in his shorts, not a pretty sight'

What a sneery thing to say. Do you look great in your shorts?!

The picture is lovely, it shows him happy and relaxed with his wife and friends despite constant media attacks and slurs.

the80sweregreat · 23/08/2022 09:02

Why are there slurs and vitriolic comments about Boris Johnson?
Maybe you should ask the 54 people in the House of Commons who resigned because of him. I'm sure they will fill you in.

newnamethanks · 23/08/2022 09:39

He should look relaxed and happy, still getting "handouts" from the public purse to pay for his indulgences. It's like a travelling circus.

Cornettoninja · 23/08/2022 09:39

Maybe he wouldn’t be getting constant slurs if he’d done the decent thing and left when his party voted no confidence in him.

He’s a basically a squatter drawing a salary at this point. He’s certainly not using his final weeks to do anything of value to the country. Weirdly that pisses people off.

SueSaid · 23/08/2022 10:02

'Maybe he wouldn’t be getting constant slurs if he’d done the decent thing and left when his party voted no confidence in him.'

He won the VONC!

Weasly backbenchers then just decided to oust him anyway. Nevermind we'll soon have Truss running the show.

Quia · 23/08/2022 10:03

@JaniieJones, as you're back, perhaps you could deal with a query which seems to have been missed upthread. Do you think it was just an unmerited slur when people complained that Johnson appointed a known sex molester to a position of power over junior MPs and staff, hesitated to take away the whip when he duly started molesting people publicly, and then sent various ministers out to churn out different lies for him?

Cornettoninja · 23/08/2022 10:23

Weasley back benchers? Have a word with yourself. Back benchers finally unable to continue lying for such a ridiculous sloppy character making them look incompetent by association.

winning is debatable. I don’t think pledging to resign and sparking a leadership contest is a sign of ‘winning’ but I think we’ve already established we have very different standards.

Notonthestairs · 23/08/2022 10:31

I'm not sure anyone would describe Oliver Dowden as a backbencher. He was a bit further up the pecking order as chair of the party.
Then there were 25 ministers and 5 members of the cabinet. Again all a bit more than backbenchers.
I suppose I'd think of the 23 PPSs as backbenchers maybe.

And it was absolutely ok for Johnson to repeat a far right smear about the leader of the opposition (and for certain posters to support that).
But heaven forfend that anyone criticise Johnson's holidays.
