New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

'winning is debatable'

No, it isn't. You said he lost a vonc, he didn't.

Cornettoninja · 23/08/2022 10:49

Ok Janiie, carry on enjoying your world.

'WARNING... it shows BJ on holiday in his shorts, not a pretty sight'

What a sneery thing to say. Do you look great in your shorts?!

The picture is lovely, it shows him happy and relaxed with his wife and friends despite constant media attacks and slurs.

Yes I do actually. I've lost over 3 stone and I'm very proud of that fact.

BJ was planning to go on a fitness drive and lose weight after COVID, he announced it. As usual with him, didn't happen

Quia · 23/08/2022 11:00

@JaniieJones, you always used to tell us about Boris's brilliant performance on economics. Do you have any thoughts to offer on the fact that the UK economy has shrunk by the largest margin since 1709?

He won the battle but lost the war didn't he.

Oh my!

How spot on is that. Tories will hate it.

That’s inspired. It should be required watching for the new cabinet.

That’s pretty succinct.

mibbelucieachwell · 23/08/2022 14:29

Tbh, it's good that we're a step closer to having a new nuclear power plant. Privately funded though. I guess that'll go the same way as the gas and oil producers then. Private individuals shouldn't be allowed to 'own' the means to provide for a basic human requirement and use it to keep populations in thrall to them. Angry

Fladdermus · 23/08/2022 15:05

I heard on the radio earlier that Sunak has pledged to redefine the definition of 'asylum seeker' as a means of tackling the channel crossings. Which sounds like an admittance that they are in fact asylum seekers and not the illegal economic migrants they try to paint them as.

I came across this link from @wallaw on another thread, it’s an analysis into excess death figures, it’s pretty a pretty grim conclusion.

Funny but yet not funny!

borntobequiet · 23/08/2022 16:26

we'll soon have Truss running the show

A seriously depressing prospect, but the silver lining to this cloud is that it will probably finally destroy the Conservative Party in its current malign incarnation.

the80sweregreat · 23/08/2022 16:36

I'm sure they ( right wing press ) will herald in Mrs Truss as the new Iron Lady etc. Until they don't like her that is
They did the same to Theresa May as well

Thank you for this. It's really hitting home across all ages; even if you are healthy, your parent, friend or neighbor is not. My disabled father had to be hauled to hospital by a neighbor after a bad fall whilst my friend had to wait with her mother (who had a stroke) for 12 hours.

I do genuinely wonder which crisis will break the camels back and spark protests.

Cornettoninja · 23/08/2022 21:51

@TheABC i hope you and yours are doing better now. I’ve unfortunately got a couple of my own experiences and it’s terrifying being in a precarious situation knowing that an ambulance is hours away.

the thing that stands out in that thread to me is that A&E/ambulance attendances are back at pre-pandemic levels. I was surprised tbh, I would have put good money on extra workload caused by post-covid complications without resource planning. But that’s not it. It’s over a decade of criminal under resourcing of health and social care.

The tories stood by and watched covid kill us and now they’re standing by watching us die of causes we would have lived through three years ago.

Notonthestairs · 23/08/2022 22:55

Cornetto - That JBM thread is illuminating and so frustrating.

These segments jumped out to me -

"You can’t run hospitals like a "just in time" operation, keeping spare capacity to a minimum.

You might be able to plan and schedule elective appointments, but you can’t plan and schedule emergency arrivals. They require a healthy amount of spare capacity"

"Outdated IT systems are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to chronic under-investment in the long-term of the NHS

While UK spends a similar share of GDP on healthcare vs peer countries, this overwhelmingly goes on short-term, neglecting both preventive and social care...

and also under-investing in infrastructure, leaving British hospitals far more poorly-resourced than those of peer countries"

I just don't see the will to tackle these issues.
The Conservatives have wasted so much time covering up for Johnson's personal failures, the party scandals & corruption. They've busied themselves distracting voters with the National Trust, BBC licence etc. They haven't had the desire or possibly bandwidth to engage with the more serious long term issues.

I don't see this changing with Truss.

tobee · 24/08/2022 05:50

I see Liz Truss says she doesn't need an ethics adviser as she "knows right from wrong"

tobee · 24/08/2022 05:53

And yet:-

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/liz-truss-government-times-radio-birmingham-nec-b2151228.html

🙄

I hadn't seen this second piece before I posted the first

Cornettoninja · 24/08/2022 08:54

@tobee one of the comments underneath - ‘so what happens when she changes her mind?’ Grin

it’s bonkers how anyone at that level, in that party, after all the scandals this year alone, can turn around and say they don’t need an ethics advisor.

The lack of self critiquing is off the scale even if it’s just from the viewpoint that their party has a lot of ground to make up with the public after having the most unethical and crooked leader possibly ever.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2022 10:24

I've been reading this morning about how Truss has downgraded her Emergency Budget to a Fiscal Event.

An Emergency Budget would require the Government to request forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility. This is likely to reveal lack of fiscal headroom and the extent of borrowing necessary to carry out her plans.

I understand that the OBR requires a decent amount of time to complete a forecast but yet again it means we will have no real grip on the predicted impact of the proposals. Truss should have been aware of this from the outset.

Reinforces my view that the leadership election should have been truncated.

It also highlights the hypocrisy in the criticism of Sunak's borrowing for furlough (when rates were lower) as Gordon Brown economics 🙄 in comparison with Truss' reliance on borrowing now.

Notonthestairs · 24/08/2022 10:29

"She is Johnson II on Standards.
She doesn’t even understand that without an adviser on ministerial code there is no check on ministerial corruption and no register of ministers’ financial interests."

I beg to differ with Chris Bryant. I think Truss knows full well the value of an ethics advisor and that's why she doesn't want one.

Blossomtoes · 24/08/2022 10:40

I agree. The determination of this bunch of tossers to evade scrutiny is mind blowing. I reckon they’d get rid of elections if they could.
