New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

And here is a more balanced article about it all.

I really have to get my head round this.

I still wear a mask in the supermarket but not in other shops anymore.

Me too, though I also wear one in a couple of small shops where the owners/counter staff continue to wear them. A but irrational as I’ve been teaching without one for most of the last year.

borntobequiet · 16/08/2022 08:37

Oh, and I wear a mask on public transport unless it’s nearly empty, eg going to London by train last week, v crowded, mask. Returning quite late at night, few people in train, no mask.

UK real pay falls by record 3%,
Wages adjusted for inflation decline at fastest rate in 20 years, while job vacancies fall, as UK grocery price inflation hits 11.6%, highest since 2008.

Considering the control donors exert on political parties it sounds like it’s just cutting out the middlemen if I’ve understood Freeport’s and charter cities correctly.

I don’t think it’s a good thing btw.

from The Times "Assuming that she enters Downing Street on September 5, Truss will have just two weeks before parliament breaks up for the party conference season. She has promised to begin tax cuts on “day one” and a symbolic announcement from the steps of No 10 is likely. It is difficult to see the Treasury working up a full budget in this time, leaving her with a choice of either announcing a half-formed plan or trying to get through conference without a concrete cost of living package."
They return to Parliament October 17th

Two weeks in Parliament then best part of a month patting themselves on the back.

What is the point?

Cornettoninja · 16/08/2022 09:28

What is the point?

Get them all in one place for Guy Fawkes descendants?

Educational inequalities in England barely improve in two decades, study finds
www.ft.com/content/aa247f99-9164-4869-b957-0d295facf0e5

The study reports a funding gap growth between state schools and private sector pupils from around £3100 in 2010 to £6500 in 2020-21.

Levelling up?

Hope you're all better from your surgery @itsgettingweird and feeling the benefit!

itsgettingweird · 16/08/2022 14:57

Yeah I'm much better thanks.

Went back to work after 3 weeks then 4 days later it was summer holidays Grin

Can do whatever I want now but lost a lot of fitness and not back to it fully - but at least I can now work on getting it back!

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 16:03

Liz Truss looks worn out today. She is in Scotland and it all sounds so lifeless.
I swear this leadership battle has been going on for years and years now and still weeks to go.

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2022 17:35

What a gentleman

"What a gentleman"

Unbelievable! The nanny carrying 3 bags and Wilfred, while Johnson saunters down the steps, weighed down only by a young child's tiny rucksack.

balalake · 16/08/2022 18:30

@HarrietPierce if only that was the worst unkindness Mr Johnson had shown to a woman.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 19:18

The guardian has an audio of Liz Truss saying that the British do not work hard enough.
It was on the news ticker tape on sky news just now , so I had a listen online
Not sure this will go down well.

It will guarantee her win but not with the wider electorate.

Its so funny!

Its gold for Labour at the next GE !

itsgettingweird · 16/08/2022 20:28

I caught up with The last leg today with ds.

I'm trying to work out what Liz meant with "you ask left wing questions" Confused

I was actually quite shocked at just how rude and disparaging she is to people.

I honestly don't think if the general population and not just 150k people were deciding she would be miles ahead.

balalake · 16/08/2022 20:32

If British people do not work hard enough they are only following the example of Boris Johnson.

Elodie09 · 16/08/2022 20:41

Liz Truss comes over as completely false to me. I hate her voice , her facial expressions and her stupid sound bite statements. " What I will do, " yada yada yada. I even dislike the way she bounce-walks along .
So utterly fed up with them both though.
They must have forgotten they've both been in Govt for ages so they are part of the problem not the solution . as they used to say.

the80sweregreat · 16/08/2022 20:46

I can't bear her at all
It's going to be two years of me muting the tv whenever she appears on it.
It's so depressing, but I've got to get used to it I suppose :(

Roussette · 16/08/2022 21:36

I agree. It's the hand movements that really get to me. It's just like Trump.

And I agree.... the "What I will do..." endlessly.

tobee · 16/08/2022 23:52

I used to watch the tv news all the time. Now I barely do since 2016. I prefer to read my news. Although I read all the newspapers and other online sites as well as bbc and sky.

L1ttledrummergirl · 16/08/2022 23:55

The whole thing is a pile of shit. As a tory member you just have to decide which piece of shit you like best to go at the top of the pile.

And why is it taking so fucking long, I don't ever remember this much effort going into a political party election process before? Surely a leaflet with bullet points in the post with the ballot paper would have done the trick. All this travelling the country, live debates etc is ridiculous and not good for the environment, it's like a poor quality travelling show. Who is doing the work whilst this is going on? Why do we need that job if no-one is doing it at the moment?

the80sweregreat · 17/08/2022 07:45

I wonder why anyone wants this job when you read that fuel bills could reach 100 pounds a week soon and inflation is so high.
It's a lot to sort out and how normal people can afford this I've no idea.
Very worrying
