New thread as needed.

I wonder what new promises will come out this week?

Something along the lines of "where have you been. There's a crisis on and you were on holiday. You're meant to be the opposition"

All I could think was - what exactly is is opposition of? Our supposed PM is in holiday (again!) and we don't have a replacement to oppose currently!

Perhaps the media have bought into the Tory narrative that they haven't actually been in power for the last 12 years and that Truss/Sunak will be heading our first Tory Govt for over a decade?

Slightly disappointed with Starmer, doesn't address energy costs for business/public services etc nor what happens for the next 18/24 months.

£30 billion per 6 months isn't sustainable.

the80sweregreat · 15/08/2022 15:15

If Kier Starmer had worn a primark top ( or even m and s ) they would have written ' starmer wears a cheap t shirt '
He can't win either way!

Some positive news

The UK has become the first country to approve a dual vaccine which tackles both the original Covid virus and the newer Omicron variant.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/08/2022 16:56

Just wait for the Fat Ponce to try to claim credit for that now

DuncinToffee · 15/08/2022 16:58

Then he also has to admit that Covid isn't done yet.....

Support for Labour's proposal to extend the current energy price cap for a further 6 months

All Britons: 75% support / 12% oppose
Con voters: 75% support / 12% oppose
Lab voters: 85% support / 8% oppose

Blossomtoes · 15/08/2022 17:56

I wonder how many of the government’s proposals have been so popular?

Thats the danger for Lab, coming out with detailed and costed plans.. the Cons take them, rename/small tweak and it becomes their "plan"

Meanwhile Tory voters will laugh at Labour.

Not on the same scale but Corbyn had the plan to not get a uni place until A level results known, Truss claims it as her own.

Absolutely. If you aren't following politics it's easy enough to miss announcements/policies.

Approval is one thing, roll out is another.

I make no apologies for mentioning again that Evusheld, the prophylactic vaccine for those who cannot get a response from the other vaccines, was approved here in March. Last week, those in U.K. who thought this would be a lifeline, found out that the government will not be distributing it here. Despite it being developed in this country, and being used for months in over 30 countries, with real world data saying it prevents the vulnerable needing hospitalisation if the get covid.

Endlessly getting the current vaccines when you get no measurable response is pointless.

These aren't nonagenarians sitting in bath chairs. These are people of all ages, often working as teachers, doctors, nurses, business men and women etc. Their life has been heavily restricted since March 2020, and their families too.

When was the last time you wore a face mask going to the supermarket? In a pub?

tobee · 15/08/2022 18:30

That last question was to everyone not @DuncinToffee

Notonthestairs · 15/08/2022 18:33

Good if depressing article from Hospitality & Catering News. I lifted it from a James O'Brien tweet.

www.hospitalityandcateringnews.com/2022/08/the-absurdity-of-british-politics-what-happened-to-politics-for-the-common-good/

The excellent 'Hospitality And Catering News' (@HandCNews) provides more honest & informed political analysis than the Sun and the Mail combined. What a time to be alive.

Didn't PMs used to go to Cornwall in August (recall the family snaps of Blair and Cameron families) it's remarkable how often Johnson chooses to visit Europe. Hardly carbon friendly!?

Must be getting as many visits in as he can before the €7 eitas waiver is introduced next year for UK travellers to the EU

Cornettoninja · 15/08/2022 18:42

@tobee the decision not to provide Evusheld is just dreadful and reveals how much PR is involved in all these decisions. Here is this amazing drug and they’re point blank denying it to people who have no other options left. It’s disgusting.

That's ok, I didn’t think you were singling me out Smile

I still wear a mask in the supermarket but not in other shops anymore. Doesn't really make sense when I think about it.

Elodie09 · 15/08/2022 19:28

Let's get Prof Peter Jones on tv news pronto, which one would be unbiased though?
Watch the Tory's copying Sir Keir's policies which were announced this morning, it will be "look what we did, we have a great plan ."

I think somehow Rishi Sunak will win (I know, I know) but a little bit of me would love to see Liz Truss trying to come back at PM's questions against Sir Keir and Angela Raynor , Rachel Reeves etc. I am sick of hearing the PM candidates saying ,"What we will do is to ...................." ad finitum.

Notonthestairs · 15/08/2022 19:35

"When was the last time you wore a face mask going to the supermarket? In a pub?"

Thinking about it I haven't worn one in a supermarket in months.
The only places I always wear them is at DD's hospital & dentistry appointments, and on public transport or in pharmacies (no idea why I wear them in pharmacies but not supermarkets).

tobee · 15/08/2022 19:37

I suppose pharmacies are more likely to have covidy people in there buying remedies?

itsgettingweird · 15/08/2022 19:45

The last time I wore, one was in hospital when I had my hysterectomy. Even then it was the bit where your admitted. It was taken off me in theatre and we didn't wear them on the wards.

The staff didn't either IIRC.

As for PMs visiting Cornwall on their hols, yes. Cameron and Major certainly did. We were in St. Ives when John Major was there, and we just happened to be sat on a wall as he walked by. He bent down to speak to my DD and she offered him a bite of her cornish pasty. Grin He laughed and said he might buy his own later!

Roussette · 16/08/2022 08:06

A truly depressing read.

medium.com/@cormack.lawson/charter-cities-the-real-reason-for-brexit-and-the-bigger-picture-4de80dbb69fb

Charter Cities/Freeports. Minimum wage, working hours rights abolished, central government economic and planning regulations abolished, no more central government assistance, flat rate of 10% tax to include corporation tax, no CGT.
These cities will be owned by the US, Koch, Mercer and silicon valley billionaires.

Taken from the article...
There is little chance that anyone would have voted for Brexit if they were warned before the vote that they were voting to scrap their own rights and to subjugate themselves to corporate-fascist overlords. We know there are eight sites already tendered out in England with the bidding process ending on 05-Feb-2022. These areas are the East-Midlands Airport including Derby, Nottingham and part of Leicester; Felixstowe and Harwich; Humber including Hull and Lincolnshire; Immingham and Goole; Liverpool City; Plymouth and South Devon including Dartmoor; Solent including Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight; Thames, incorporating DP World’s London Gateway and Tilbury ports, Thurrock, Havering and Barking and Dagenham; and Teesside.
