As a child this is how we almost always had tuna, just mixed with lots of malt vinegar and then in a sandwich with cucumber. It was my absolute favourite
I've never heard of anyone else having this it seems for be tuna and Mayo/salad cream that are the norm!
just out of interest did anyone else ever have this? Or are my parents strange!

Tuna, mayo, soy sauce and wasabi for me. But I'm Asian. Vinegar sounds good though.

Spanielsarepainless · 29/07/2022 18:36

We had that. I still do but have replaced the cucumber with sliced tomato and a sprinkle of salt. Lovely soggy sandwiches.

knittingaddict · 29/07/2022 18:48

My mum used to mix vinegar into tinned salmon, so it's probably a thing. No idea if it's regional. She came from southern England.

We had this, with diced cucumber, tomato and chopped spring onion. DM used to call it Tuna concoction.

I haven’t had it in years, I’m going to make some.

Princessoftheuniverse · 29/07/2022 18:57

It was a thing for us and I still have tuna with vinegar sometimes. We also had egg sandwiches and I still do. Does anyone else? Seems to be all egg and mayo.

EcoCustard · 29/07/2022 18:59

I have fond memories of my parents draining the tuna, mixing with a little vinegar and having cucumber in a roll or sandwich. 3 of my 4 dc have tuna cucumber rolls or zany but no vinegar.

DeePlume · 29/07/2022 18:59

@Greensleeves no with a bit of water mixed in to thin it. It's lovely

MintyGreenDreams · 29/07/2022 19:00

Yes had these as a child mid 80s

Brigante9 · 29/07/2022 19:05

My mother, aged 84, would agree, but I’d rather mayonnaise.

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 29/07/2022 19:09

Definitely a thing in my culturally Jewish household growing up, but then we are all about the pickled cucumbers! 😀

CatSeany · 29/07/2022 19:10

I have tuna, mayo and vinegar... never just vinegar, but I definitely miss the tang in shop bought tuna mayo sandwiches!

AbsoluteShambles · 29/07/2022 19:14

It was normal in the 80s when I was kid. Up north anyway.

Maybe we were all just too poor for mayo and everyone in London was secretly upgrading their sandwiches. Wink

It was because Tina always used to come in oil. The vinegar cut the oil and made a sort of vinaigrette . Now we get tuna in brine or water it's a bit dry without some kind of dressing.

Beggingforsleep · 29/07/2022 19:16

Tuna and mayo with a dash of malt vinegar

legophoenix · 29/07/2022 19:18

Used to have these daily for packed lunches at school. My bag must have absolutely stunk 😆

My mum said it was because people couldn't afford mayo.

BestIsWest · 29/07/2022 19:32

Tuna, Mayo, malt vinegar and finely chopped onions. Mmm.

ShakespearesSisters · 29/07/2022 20:02

Oh yes, its how we always had tuna sandwiches. White bread, tuna, vinegar and cucumber. Yum.

pastabest · 29/07/2022 20:09

Tuna, malt vinegar, small amount of mayo and then chopped up PICKLED ONIONS mixed in.

Sandwiched between two slices of Warburtons Toastie bread.

Food of the gods.

Princessdebthe1st · 29/07/2022 20:23

Tuna (in brine), carefully drained, then plenty of black pepper and vinegar. Made into a sandwich with sliced cucumber. Absolutely delicious. I can’t stand tuna mayonnaise, it is disgusting, but it is the only tuna sandwich you can buy now.

My DD was just going out to the shop, she has been asked to bring back tinned tuna and cucumber!

DSGR · 29/07/2022 20:30

Yep tuna and loads of vinegar here. Delicious. Kid of the 80s

StaticRatic · 29/07/2022 20:53

I mix balsamic vinegar with tuna. With or without mayonnaise. I love it on Ritz crackers.

Darbs76 · 29/07/2022 20:55

I used to have this as a kid too. I don’t now, I have mayo

Arsewangry · 29/07/2022 20:56

Tinned salmon is nice with a bit of vinegar and cucumber and thick buttered bread 🍞

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/07/2022 21:12

Yes, tuna with a little vinegar, and cucumber.

I hate the ‘mayo with everything’ in sandwiches nowadays. There’s the odd exception (egg mashed with a little mayonnaise is nice) but IMO butter is usually better. Esp. with roast beef and horseradish (drool)
And while I’m on the subject, egg sandwiches need a bit of salt! The ones we bought the other day (egg and cress) didn’t apparently have any.,

I still make tuna sandwiches like this. Love it.
