As a child this is how we almost always had tuna, just mixed with lots of malt vinegar and then in a sandwich with cucumber. It was my absolute favourite
I've never heard of anyone else having this it seems for be tuna and Mayo/salad cream that are the norm!
just out of interest did anyone else ever have this? Or are my parents strange!

Yeah love it, although these days I'm fancier and use wine vinegar Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 29/07/2022 21:29

Eurgh. Memories of "special" teas at Christmas of gagtastic soggy tinned salmon/ vinegar/ cucumber sandwiches.

I suppose it was more "special" than tinned tomatoes on toast for dinner.

I had a small apetite for some reason...

Itsincidental · 29/07/2022 21:36

My grandparents used to do this but with salmon. Even the bread would be drenched with vinegar.

I didn't like it and never buy tinned salmon now because of it.

Yep,I had that exact sandwich yesterday!

mumda · 29/07/2022 22:01

Yes. That's how we ate tuna sandwiches. Very occasionally has salad cream in the eighties but i didn't put that on tuna.

Gnr24 · 29/07/2022 22:05

Yes always had tuna and vinegar 😋
Also tuna with seafood sauce (I think it's called Marie rose) is absolutely lovely.

Brandyb · 29/07/2022 22:19

Omg, thank you OP - I think my family are going to love this! Always seeking good easy sandwich fillers! And we are savoury, non-creamy/icky types

Beansycheese · 29/07/2022 23:56

Yes, in hell

Tinned salmon, vinegar, pepper and cucumber is still one of my favourite sandwiches.
Always hated tuna.

I never liked tinned tuna either. Still don't! We used to have tinned (always red) salmon with malt vinegar and pepper, usually with cucumber too. DH and I still have these occasionally and always have salt and balsamic vinegar crisps on the side 😋

I remember being given tuna and mayo sandwiches by my MIL and almost throwing up (I was pregnant and it looked/smelled like cat food to me 🙄).

My late parents loved bloody tinned tomatoes on toast! They stayed with us a few years back and insisted I gave them tomatoes on toast for lunch - I was out of tinned ones so they said fresh ones would suffice....bleurgh 🙄😝🤮

Tinned tomatoes on toast with a sprinkle of celery salt was a staple of my childhood and teens! I haven't had it for so long. Now I want some!

Oldraver · 30/07/2022 08:32

Yes, back in the 70's and 80's this is how we would have tinned tuna and salmon

I like them both with mayonnaise now

I've not had that in years was a favourite Sunday breakfast of mine.

Otilli · 03/03/2023 15:33

It's a sign of the times. Their was no such thing as mayonnaise. Later on salad cream made an appearance but only for salad

ODFOx · 03/03/2023 15:52

When I was a child tinned tuna was uncommon, but tinned fish (salmon, sardines, skippers, sold etc) generally came in oil so vinegar was used to cut the oiliness.
We didn't have mayo really either, just salad cream.

Rummikub · 03/03/2023 19:45

So if I had rubbed tuna in oil, added vinegar and mixed in with mayo- would I have a traditional tuna mayo sandwich?

I used to go to a bakery bear to my sixth form where they did the best tuna baguettes and I just cannot recreate it!

Rummikub · 03/03/2023 20:08

⬆️Tinned! Not rubbed

ChessieFL · 04/03/2023 08:03

I found adding vinegar to tuna mayo makes it taste more like the stuff you get from shops.

Otilli · 04/03/2023 11:10

Deftinitely oil

Darbs76 · 04/03/2023 11:13

Yes years ago I always did this, and then I discovered mayo, but might try some again now you’ve reminded me

Thank you I’ll try this then and see. Excited!

WhisperingAutistic · 04/03/2023 11:47

We used to have those. Sometimes with a bit of raw onion in too.
I'd still eat it now but generally have them with mayo instead.

HuggingtheHRT · 04/03/2023 14:32

Still do this when I'm trying to be good and avoid the mayo. Bloody lovely!

StaticRatic · 05/03/2023 08:23

I always add some balsamic vinegar to tuna. It suits it very well.
