As a child this is how we almost always had tuna, just mixed with lots of malt vinegar and then in a sandwich with cucumber. It was my absolute favourite
I've never heard of anyone else having this it seems for be tuna and Mayo/salad cream that are the norm!
just out of interest did anyone else ever have this? Or are my parents strange!

Gloopy lol not floppy

Thinkingblonde · 29/07/2022 15:53

It’s how we had we had them growing up, Mayo wasn’t really a thing in our house. Salad cream was our version of Mayo but never in tuna sandwiches.
I do them with vinegar, salt and Mayo now though.

Yes. With diced white onion on white bread, butter and lots of salt. Have this occasionally when we’re out of Mayo / Salad Cream.

There are tuna salad recipes (chopped-up/flaked tinned tuna mixed in with chopped onion, pepper, celery, etc.) made with red wine or balsamic vinegar and a little olive oil instead of mayo, usually called "Mediterranean tuna salad" or something like that. Also Niçoise salad (made with a filet of tuna) traditionally has a vinaigrette dressing.

LovinglifeAF · 29/07/2022 15:56

Yes. We had this. I like it with sliced tomatoes on top too

dolphinsarentcommon · 29/07/2022 15:57

Horseradish sauce mixed in to tuna is delicious if you fancy something different

siblingrevelryagain · 29/07/2022 15:59

We did - my Mom used to make them and it's still a thing my sister and I request them from her as the ultimate comfort food

Must be cheap white bread a la the 80's
Tuna/vinegar/raw onion (no fancy spring onions - proper Spanish onion)

I'm on a diet but really want one now

Tuna wasn't invented when I was a kid. Or at least my parents never bought it.

We had sardines and mackerel and yes, with vinegar and some ground white pepper, I seem to remember. Tinned red salmon was far too expensive for anything other than sandwiches on Easter Sunday and Boxing Day. With the vinegar treatment also.

It was a revelation to me when ExH's parents made me a salmon sandwich with salad cream in it!

20viona · 29/07/2022 16:01

My mum and dad used to always add vinegar to tuna but the thought of it now turns my stomach!

Pythonesque · 29/07/2022 16:01

We mashed sardines with vinegar and salmon with mayo; don't recall doing anything specific with tinned tuna but then it most often was mixed into a risotto (well, stirfried veg + chopped omelette + tin of tuna + cooked rice, very easy meal especially when my mother had students after school all evening!)

My partner's tuna sandwiches always taste way better than mine and I only recently found out it's because he's shining vinegar to it - and mayo. It makes it runnier, more like in sandwich shops so I'm assuming they do it too to make the filling go further?

This is v useful to know! I can never get my tuna mayo tu taste like in the shops.

I did try tuna and salad cream and that was nice but not as good as shop bought.

How much vinegar? @Babiesarenotrobots

Lakeyloo · 29/07/2022 16:04

My Mum used to put vinegar into the almost empty salad cream bottle and give it a good shake to make it go further (1970's), so anything with salad cream in/on normally contained vinegar 😖

Plumtreebob · 29/07/2022 16:07

This has unlocked a childhood memory for me OP, sandwiches with tuna or tinned salmon with vinegar and black pepper and a good layer of butter.

Rummikub · 29/07/2022 16:08

Does anyone know how to make old fashioned (80s) tuna sandwiches? Pretty sure is with mayo or salad cream. I had some at a residents meeting a few years ago and it took me right back!

Yarnasaurus · 29/07/2022 16:11

Yup, this is exactly how we used to have them, late 70s/early 80s. Delicious.

maddy68 · 29/07/2022 16:20

Yes it's my favourite.

DeePlume · 29/07/2022 16:23

Ooh I might try that. I like tuna mixed with tomato purée.

tootiredforanything · 29/07/2022 16:24

We had tuna and cucumber sandwiches and the tuna was always mixed with vinegar, so yes they are a thing!

linenalltheway · 29/07/2022 16:26

Think the vinegar was to offset the brine. Nowadays there are more choices eg springwater

saraclara · 29/07/2022 16:26

Yep, and I still do! It's one of my favourites. Lots of malt vinegar, black pepper, and if I have any, slices of cucumber.

Much tastier (and less fattening) than tuna mayo. __

Titsflyingsouth · 29/07/2022 16:27

I love a tuna sandwich with a sprinkle of vinegar. Fewer calories than mayo and just as nice.

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2022 16:27

I always put vinegar in my tuna sandwiches always with mayo though. Its lovely.

MaxOverTheMoon · 29/07/2022 16:28

Tuna and mayo or salmon and vinegar growing up.

I make tuna salads with balsamic vinegar now. I really loved tinned salmon and vinegar sandwiches, I might make them tomorrow.

Tomato puree? Raw tomato puree? That sounds absolutely disgusting...isn't it bitter?

Ha! My dad did that with the last bit of the tomato ketchup.
