As a child this is how we almost always had tuna, just mixed with lots of malt vinegar and then in a sandwich with cucumber. It was my absolute favourite
I've never heard of anyone else having this it seems for be tuna and Mayo/salad cream that are the norm!
just out of interest did anyone else ever have this? Or are my parents strange!

I've never had tuna that way, but it doesn't sound terrible. I wouldn't eat a lot of it though as I find very acidic foods don't sit easily in my stomach.

My favourite tuna sandwich is tuna mayonnaise with sliced banana, preferably on a wholemeal bagel but granary bread would do too.

I try and have this every week with apple cider vinegar.

DH’s family had similar but with tinned salmon.

It’s weird, because he will say he dislikes fish, but he will eat this, fish fingers, crumbed cod and sardine and tomato fish paste. (Not all on the same plate 😜)

I like it with plenty of the oil left in it and vinegar added. Most delicious was the addition of seasoned rice vinegar which contained sugar and salt. I'm not keen on salad cream or mayo.

we used to have this with tinned salmon it was horrible

I can even begin to think how this tastes (and neither do I want to)

My dad did them like this. Thanks for reminding me, he died a few years ago, and tomorrow I’m going to have this for lunch and think about him 💙

When I was a child in the 60s tinned red salmon was always more expensive than pink. My gran used to buy the cheaper pink salmon then mix some vinegar from the beetroot jar to make it look like red salmon in the hope of impressing her visitors!

Tuna mayo and banana is awesome on a pizza. Everyone thinks I'm mental.and it's wrong but I am sure there was an advert on TV in the 80s that mentioned it. Yellow pages maybe?

Never tried it cold in a sarnie though.

Damnloginpopup · 18/11/2023 23:33

Yep

, apparently dominos put it on the menu too!

99% of the time I can take or leave tuna, but there is 1% when it utterly hits the spot and really perks me up.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 19/11/2023 01:24

Yes. They're DW's favourite.

bluebicyclebell · 19/11/2023 05:12

A resurrected thread! But yes, this is how we had tuna sandwiches in the 70's. Tuna mashed with malt vinegar, thinly sliced cucumber, buttered brown bread. Delicious! A wonderful Italian sandwich bar in our town made them that way too and they were super-popular. All the sandwiches made up ready in glass cabinets, with damp muslin over the top to keep them fresh.

It's scary to see how much mayo goes into tuna mayo as a sandwich or jacket potato filling.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 19/11/2023 05:26

Deffo a thing. My mum gave us the same in the 90s. Also used to have salad with salad cream sandwiches.

meatbaseddessert · 19/11/2023 06:21

I remember at school a friend giving me a triangle of tuna vinegar and cucumber sandwich from her lunchbox in exchange for a triangle of Dairylea and cucumber.

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. The bread was deliciously soggy and I've tried to recreate it many times with little success. Im guessing I'm missing the 'sweating inside cling film in an orange Tupperware for 4 hours' factor.

Never had a tuna and vinegar sandwich, but I've always loved tuna and vinegar on toast!
