As a child this is how we almost always had tuna, just mixed with lots of malt vinegar and then in a sandwich with cucumber. It was my absolute favourite
I've never heard of anyone else having this it seems for be tuna and Mayo/salad cream that are the norm!
just out of interest did anyone else ever have this? Or are my parents strange!

I used to have these for my school lunch. I'd put in loads of malt vinegar so it would make the bread a bit soggy. Not had one for over 30 years thinking about it!

Tuna wasn't invented when I was a kid. Or at least my parents never bought it.

We had sardines and mackerel and yes, with vinegar and some ground white pepper, I seem to remember. Tinned red salmon was far too expensive for anything other than sandwiches on Easter Sunday and Boxing Day. With the vinegar treatment also.

It was a revelation to me when ExH's parents made me a salmon sandwich with salad cream in it!

We didn't have tinned tuna either but we had salmon occasionally usually Christmas and parties usually mixed with vinegar and black pepper.

Yes, but not a nice thing tbh 🤢

it keeps the tuna fresh a bit longer

My h makes lovely tuna/ tinned salmon sandwiches with vinegar and cucumber. Bloody lovely. I never had them as a child, but apparently he did.

LilianLenton · 29/07/2022 16:51

I only discovered vinegar on tuna when I went for tea at a school friend's house, they added malt vinegar & white pepper instead of mayonnaise. So much nicer!

LoveMuscle · 29/07/2022 16:53

Yeah that's how my mum always makes tuna for sandwiches!
I prefer Mayo

ludocris · 29/07/2022 16:55

My dad always mixed tuna with vinegar and salad cream and it was my favourite sandwich. That's still how I make it now.

LilacPoppy · 29/07/2022 16:55

Yes but you need plenty of black pepper too. Hate Mayo.

RiverSkater · 29/07/2022 16:55

This is how we had egg sandwiches, mashed with vinegar. I loved them!

Dacquoise · 29/07/2022 16:56

We had vinegar on tinned salmon (which was considered posh) when we were children. It's not that unusual, if you think about it, as lemon is squeezed over fish in restaurants but agree that you can't recreate the same sandwiches as an adult. Just doesn't taste the same. Also rarely see salad cream these days which was another regular sandwich filling (on it's own) in my childhood.

Crocky · 29/07/2022 16:57

Tinned salmon, vinegar, pepper and cucumber is still one of my favourite sandwiches.
Always hated tuna.

Janesdufflecoat · 29/07/2022 16:59

We used to have vinegar with salmon & tuna sandwiches!

And now I always put a splash of vinegar on my fish finger sandwich!

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2022 16:59

Both my grans used to serve cucumber with vinegar in a salad sometimes put onion through it.

Yes they are amazing!

Topseyt123 · 29/07/2022 17:06

Tuna and vinegar was my favourite school lunchbox sandwiches when I was growing up. I never put anything else with it, just drained the tuna out of the tin, shook in some vinegar and that was it.

fakename13778 · 29/07/2022 17:13

We didn't have tuna with vinegar, but we definitely had tinned salmon with lots of vinegar and cucumber. I had completely forgotten about it but will definitely be having it for lunch tomorrow!

SeraphinaAngelina · 29/07/2022 17:21

My gran used to make salmon sandwiches with vinegar.

i make my tuna with mayo, red onion and vinegar. It’s a game changer.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 29/07/2022 17:22

No I always add vinegar to tuna instead of mayo or salad cream. Can't beat it! Not sure how I discovered it as my mum always used salad cream?

KangarooKenny · 29/07/2022 17:22

Yea, that’s how we did it before we had mayo.

nokitchen · 29/07/2022 17:39

Tinned red salmon, vinegar and cucumber. Delicious. Never ate tuna as a child of the sixties. Also red salmon was used in quiches with broccoli. Didn't eat fresh salmon til I was an adult.

FizzyTango · 29/07/2022 17:41

I make a tuna mix for sandwiches/pittas etc. it’s delicious. Tuna, vinegar, spoonful of Greek yogurt. Then mix in chopped onion, cucumber and sweetcorn.

FatOaf · 29/07/2022 17:47

When I was a kid we certainly always had tinned salmon & vinegar sandwiches when we visited relatives. It's not something I do with tuna: I prefer mayonnaise, red onion & cucumber.

hairypaws · 29/07/2022 18:14

I still have to add vinegar, even with mayo - love it.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 29/07/2022 18:31

It was the norm for us too! I didn’t have a tuna and mayo sandwich till I was an adult and I had a pre-made one.

I might have to make myself one tomorrow now.
