How many children is a lot of children?

I was just reading about someone with 12 children. I feel guilty about spreading my attention and money 2 ways. Maybe a "lot" is different depending on your finances or network? Anymore than 4 I would consider a lot.

More than two imo - 1-2 is a normal amount, once you get more children than hands it’s a lot 😆

I have a friend who is one of 10 and she is definitely not the better for it.

I think 5 or more and I’d think that’s a lot of children. To some people it could be 4 or even 3. I came from a family of 4 kids so it’s never seemed a lot to me but to someone who comes from less it could be.

BiscoffSundae · 26/07/2022 17:09

I have 4 and most people I have come across think this is a lot including on MN

Ihatethenewlook · 26/07/2022 17:09

More than 3

Hugasauras · 26/07/2022 17:10

I think 4 or more seems like a lot these days.

nottalot · 26/07/2022 17:10

More than three.

Keepitrealnomists · 26/07/2022 17:11

More than 2, not sure why you would have more children then hands 😂

Cattenberg · 26/07/2022 17:12

I knew someone with 8 (I just had 2 myself). Money was extremely tight. It always all felt a bit chaotic to me. I think you need to be military level organised with that many, and these people weren’t. The older ones didn’t really get any individual attention. They were all loved, but you just can’t be there all the time for that many!

Palg68 · 26/07/2022 17:16

4 and more is a lot. I'm one of 4 siblings and Consider myself to be from a big family. Plus when you can't get all your kids in a car you know it's a lot!

ofwarren · 26/07/2022 17:16

More than 4 I think

DistrictCommissioner · 26/07/2022 17:18

More than 4.

SeanMean · 26/07/2022 17:20

More than 3

Depends on so many variables - to name just a few - finances, housing, time available, parenting skills and emotional support you have available to give do it right from baby right through to a launched adult to todays modern parenting standards.

Very few people can do a good, or even an average job, in all areas for more than 2, but they would never admit it. Once parents choose to go for more than 2 it is all about what they want rather than what those kids will need as they grow.

This! We’re on holiday with two, if we had more simple things like everyone being in the pool safely wouldn’t be possible, just flying would be difficult due to ages and number of adults needed etc. You only have one to put to bed etc as you can take one each.

Thatsenoughnow · 26/07/2022 17:31

Friends of ours have three aged 5, 7 and 9 and when they come over it feels like a LOT of children.

Mary46 · 26/07/2022 17:33

More than 3. Its alot of juggling.

EV117 · 26/07/2022 17:35

I’d say 4 plus. But maybe it also depends on age gaps - 4 under the age of say 6 or 7 seems like a lot. But 6 children ranging from 0 to 17 not so much maybe.

BlueKaftan · 26/07/2022 17:36

More than 2 although these days it seems like lots of people are having 3.

chilliesandspices · 26/07/2022 17:38

I say 5 or more because I'm from a family of 4. Growing up it wasn't that unusual though I guess these days any more than 3 sounds a lot. It's become more normal to expect children to have a bedroom each and there aren't a lot of 5 bed houses.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/07/2022 17:40

I was one of four children and that seemed normal at the time (1960s). Most people I knew at school were in families with three or four children. Two seemed like a small family but five definitely seemed like a lot.

These days, I'd say four seems like a lot. Most people I know now have two or three children.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 26/07/2022 17:43

I’d say more than 2 or 3 is a lot!

TimBoothseyes · 26/07/2022 17:43

2 which is why I have just 1. 😃

Footbal · 26/07/2022 17:52

5 or more

V4Vienetta · 26/07/2022 17:52

3 seems like a lot to me!
I'm a single parent to 3 and feel overwhelmed and out numbered a lot!

I had more siblings than that, and my parents had more again though so I think the number that is deemed a lot has gone down a lot.
