By the way, the A-10 is a very tough bird. The pilot sits in a titanium bathtub and all flight systems are redundant. This one took some pretty spectacular battle damage but the pilot brought it in for a textbook landing anyway. She was awarded the DFC (Distinguished Flying Award}, which is a real honor.

I doubt Putin will attend G20. He'd be too paranoid - too many people to mingle with, and I doubt anyone would give him his beloved 10m table. That's before you even consider that half the world wants him dead.

Alexander Dugin's daughter has been killed in Moscow - her car just exploded. Just happened so that's all the information so far but this is very weird

OP posts:
MagicFox · 20/08/2022 22:56

Further reports that Dugin himself was meant to be in the car but swapped out last minute. Russian media say the explosion was caused by an IED? So an assassination but who by?

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 20/08/2022 23:03

I had no idea who he is, so I googled. This is from his Wikipedia article.

Aleksandr Gelyevich Dugin (Russian: Александр Гельевич Дугин; born 7 January 1962) is a Russian political philosopher,[5] analyst, and strategist known for views widely characterized as fascist.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12] Considered by some in the West to be "Putin's brain,"[13] or "Putin's philosopher," Dugin is believed by some to have been the brains behind Russia's annexation of Crimea[14] as part of Dugin's advocacy for Ukraine becoming "a purely administrative sector of the Russian centralized state", which he refers to as Novorossiya.[15] Dugin is also believed to have laid the ideological groundwork for the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.[16] Dugin calls for an illiberal totalitarian Russian Empire to control the Eurasian continent from Dublin to Vladivostok to challenge America and "Atlanticism".[17][18]

MagicFox · 20/08/2022 23:11

He's been spoken about in relation to putin's ideological beliefs. But this is all very weird - I'm assuming he was the target rather than his daughter but she is also a political figure in Russia. But they're pro-Putin

Oh my goodness.

Did anyone realise there are claims that Putin is a paedophile? I'd seen it trending but thought frankly it was a disgusting and unacceptable slur á la Elon Musk claiming the Brit diver in the Thai cave rescue was a paedophile. But if anyone can access it ...

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/alexander-litvinenko-murdered-because-he-accused-putin-of-being-a-paedophile-a6824806.html

or

www.thedailybeast.com/alexander-litvinenko-was-killed-for-calling-putin-a-pedophile

(did John Sweeny or someone also include some information in a book?)

How extraordinary Ijsbear, no I had never heard that before. Did you click on the link within the Daily Beast to a BBC 2006 news report about him lifting the little boys shirt and kissing his tummy?

BBC NEWS | World | Europe | Putin recalls kissing boy's belly
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5155448.stm

Mr Putin came across Nikita, five, in the Kremlin last week, lifted up his T-shirt and suddenly kissed him.

"He seemed very independent and serious... I wanted to cuddle him like a kitten and it came out in this gesture. He seemed so nice," he said.

The kiss - shown on Russian television - triggered huge public interest.

"There is nothing behind it", Mr Putin told the BBC in a live webcast on Thursday, explaining that the encounter on 28 June was quite spontaneous.

I know the feeling he means in a general way when little children are your own and they are so sweet you want to kiss them, and their little round tummies are darling. But it is very odd to do this to a stranger. At the least it shows he has an extraordinary presumption of entitlement.

I wonder too if the story of his own traumatic childhood as an illegitimate child in Georgia with a brutal stepfather who couldn’t stand him is true , that being followed by sending him to distant relatives in St Petersburg aged ten?

and the planes Ukraine will be using.

...might be using.

The issue here is politics plus, despite it's reputation there are genuine doubts, have been for some time, about how well the A-10 would do over a modern battlefield..though of course OTOH there are now doubts about just how modern the Russian air defence systems, especially the organic units embedded with the troops on the battlefield actually are.

In terms of comment in the press it's worth being aware that pilots are often notoriously loyal to types they have flown so you'll continue to see glowing reviews from A-10 former operators, some who have moved onto senior rank..

I would be really interesting to see how well or badly the UkAF Su-25 fleet is doing given the Su-25 is very very roughly an A-10 equivalent: if it's surviving, doing well and is combat effective then a batch of A-10s makes sense...if the Su-25 fleet has been rendered ineffective then it might explain why some sources are claiming the F-16 is the preferred option.

Who knows? I'd love to think Ukraine now has the capability to do things like this in Moscow itself, but there are more people than the Ukrainians who'd have reason to want to kill Dugin and it would be a huge advance on what they've been able to do previously.

Key Takeaways

Russian occupation officials in Crimea reported another drone attack on the Russian Black Sea Fleet Headquarters in Sevastopol and are likely considering strengthening security on the peninsula.

Russian forces conducted unsuccessful assaults across the Eastern Axis.

Russian forces attempted limited, failed assaults north of Kharkiv City.

Russian forces failed to advance after several assaults northwest of Kherson City and east of Mykolaiv City.

Ukrainian forces continued to strike Russian ammunition depots and positions in Kherson and Zaporizhia Oblasts.

Russian and proxy forces are continuing mobilization efforts, including forced mobilization in occupied territories and advertising campaigns.

Russian occupation authorities continued coercive measures to force civilian cooperation with the occupation administrations.

Conditions in occupied territories continued to deteriorate, indicating ineffective governance.

[also:Russian occupation officials in Crimea are likely considering strengthening security on the peninsula following the attacks on Russian military infrastructure, and such measures may draw Russian security forces away from the front lines. Razvozhaev stated that all security services in Sevastopol are operating in “high alert” mode and controlling all entrances to the city.[5] Razvozhaev claimed that Sevastopol residents are asking the occupation administration to increase patrols in the city and establish new checkpoints, returning the peninsula to a security posture such as it had after Russia initially seized it in 2014. ISW has previously assessed that Russian forces have been using all types of security forces, including Rosgvardia, as combat forces and will likely need to divert some of these forces from the front lines and from occupation security duties elsewhere to defend occupied Crimea.[6] Russia’s continued failures to stop attacks against occupied Crimea may also spark public discontent within Russian society. One Russian milblogger criticized Russian forces for not using more electronic warfare (EW) equipment following the first drone attack on July 31.[7] Social media footage already shows many Russians waiting in traffic jams to leave Crimea and go to Russia, which may indicate growing public concern for the effectiveness of Russian security measures.[8]

So Moscow is blaming Ukraine for the death of Alexander Dugin’s daughter and threatening retaliation in Kyiv. Any speculation on why or who did this? Seems a convenient reach to think a) Ukraine has the resources to carry out such an attack and b) would choose this particular target if they did. So then who? Russian ‘allies’ turning on each other?
