Yeah I saw. That and all the posts about her blowing up overnight!

I guess if there are more like this in the near future then maybe that will be a sign, but as things stand it does feel a bit optimistic to think this could've been pulled off by Ukraine. Attacks in Crimea is one thing, Moscow itself quite another. Love to be wrong of course.

UPDATE #3: Dugin's parked car was under active security prior to the car bomb detonating & killing his mirror-image fascist adult daughter. He was supposed to be in the car. Only Russian security services could have accessed the car while it was parked such as FSB, GRU, FSO, etc.

and the planes Ukraine will be using.

...might be using.

The issue here is politics plus, despite it's reputation there are genuine doubts, have been for some time, about how well the A-10 would do over a modern battlefield..though of course OTOH there are now doubts about just how modern the Russian air defence systems, especially the organic units embedded with the troops on the battlefield actually are.

In terms of comment in the press it's worth being aware that pilots are often notoriously loyal to types they have flown so you'll continue to see glowing reviews from A-10 former operators, some who have moved onto senior rank..

I would be really interesting to see how well or badly the UkAF Su-25 fleet is doing given the Su-25 is very very roughly an A-10 equivalent: if it's surviving, doing well and is combat effective then a batch of A-10s makes sense...if the Su-25 fleet has been rendered ineffective then it might explain why some sources are claiming the F-16 is the preferred option.

I didn't realize that the UKAF was flying the frogfoot. Looking at its combat losses is a good way to gauge how permissive the environment would be for the A-10. Given how many ammo depots have been blown up and how badly Russian logistics have been disrupted, they may not have many manpads in theater.

The pressure to keep the A-10 in the US inventory comes as much from the US Army as it does from former operators in the USAF. The A-10 saved thousands of lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, and lots of people doubt that the F16 would be as effective in a combat support role. As I described above, the A-10 was designed specifically for that role. That's all it does, and it does it very well indeed. A natural mission for them would be hunting and killing Russian artillery. It's all within 20 miles of the front lines, so the A-10s wouldn't need to go deeply into Russian controlled territory to do so.

I think that we should give the UKAF both planes if they want them.

Who knows? I'd love to think Ukraine now has the capability to do things like this in Moscow itself, but there are more people than the Ukrainians who'd have reason to want to kill Dugin and it would be a huge advance on what they've been able to do previously.

This was complicated for me by the first I heard of it because Denis Pushilin, who is head of the pro-Kremlin Donetsk People's Republic, accused Ukrainian terrorists of blowing up Dugin's daughter. That made it sound as if it had happened in Ukraine, and puzzled me considerably because what was she doing there? It was a relief to find out that it was near Moscow.

notimagain · 21/08/2022 11:09

They supposedly have some Su-25s, perhaps not many, there's some footage around from the early days of the conflict but numbers now are a bit vague.

I think that we should give the UKAF both planes if they want them.

Agreed, as you say the A-10 is very capable at what it was built to do but I suspect any pilot with any sense really wouldn't want to go far beyond the forward line of own troops in one.

F-16 (possibly) won't be as good as the A-10 at Close Air Support but has more flexibility and is certainly more multi-role.

I guess in an ideal world the UkAF would like lots of both, but that comes at a cost (financial possibly and certainly in the amount of support needed)..and may be if it's a case of just one type then the F-16 would make sense.....

Anyhow it's still all more than a bit speculative, I suspect there's quite a lot of smoke and mirrors in some of the blogs and MSM pieces...it'll be interesting to see what get delivered at some point.

Russia is blaming Ukraine for the bombing of Dugin's daughter. Despite the car being guarded by Russian security services.

That's a risky little game. I wonder if they realise how much of a boost that will be to Ukrainians and supporters, the idea that fascists in Moscow can now be blown up under the noses of the Russian security services?

minsmum · 21/08/2022 11:33

I have seen on Twitter that she has been networking, which is apparently frowned on and that Putin likely arranged the assassination

Except I thought they were saying that her father was meant to be in the same car and only decided at the last minute to go in a different one. Has Putin got tired of him as well?

OwlsDance · 21/08/2022 13:31

Anyone in Kremlin could have ordered that hit. I think we'll see much more of this in the coming months.

MMBaranova · 21/08/2022 14:01

Darya Dugina: clip circulating on her on TV saying 'Ukrainians are not humans. They all deserve to die.'

She was perfectly evil in her own right. Whether she was the target or not is open to question.

Her father is built up as an influential philosopher. He's more an ultra-nationalist Orthodox nutjob. He cultivates the visual image of a sage. Take care when some says he has influence. It's not straightforward. His ideas feed into the whole Russia first mindset but he has no direct power. His influence is more on the thinking of sections of the public than the elite.

Ijsbear · 21/08/2022 16:14

Kamil Galeev's take agrees with you, and says that he's better known in the West than in Russia.

Do you think he really was close to and influential over Putin then?

Personally I think that yes, she was a legitimate target since she was actively encouraging murdering Ukrainians and Russia went to war with Ukraine. But was it really the Ukrainians who targetted her?

MagicFox · 21/08/2022 17:19

Seeing reports that Dugin has been taken to hospital now too, but no more info yet

Holy smokes, Russia's national republican army has claimed responsibility for the assassination of dugin's daughter

mobile.twitter.com/WarMonitor3/status/1561374457893195776 unconfirmed reports of factions in the Russian army fighting amongst themselves, both sides have reported significant losses

DrBlackbird · 21/08/2022 19:33

Interesting about claims of NRA being responsible. It’s not wholly unbelievable that some within Russia will be sick of the war and sick of wealth flowing to oligarchs whilst the poor suffers from the economic sanctions. But why this particular target? Why not a politician? And if they / the car were being guarded, doesn’t this imply Russian forces of some sort are involved?

MagicFox · 21/08/2022 19:41

I'm wondering that too @DrBlackbird Could it be symbolic, with all the talk of Dugin's ideology aligning with Putin's? And especially the dehumanising of Ukrainians. The statement mentions Slavic brotherhood. Before this statement there was lots of suspicion about Putin being involved. But now (and sorry I've not got the thread to hand anymore) somebody in Kyiv (political) was saying they aided the NLA with info. Will try to find thread...

OP posts:
MagicFox · 21/08/2022 19:42

Scratch that - I saw the emphasis on Kyiv helping on a pro-Russian account so it's likely bollocks

OP posts:
Ijsbear · 21/08/2022 20:18

Perhaps the claims of the car being guarded were wrong .... (and I got into a fight with some Russian propagandists about that, oops)

minsmum · 21/08/2022 21:05

mobile.twitter.com/DAlperovitch/status/1561384191040065536 all sorts of theories going round, someone on this thread thinks she may have been moving money. Someone else said she worked for Wagner does anyone know if that's true

MagicFox · 21/08/2022 21:26

I think the target was Dugin rather than his daughter so if that is the case then speculation about why her is pretty limited. But who knows?!
