"China calls on Putin to end Russian roulette at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine after disaster near-miss. When China is speaking up, you know it’s serious. They barely have peeped a word about Ukraine until now."

Wow.

But it's obvious the Chinese government are going to be really pissed off with Russia about how badly the invasion has gone for them. It is shocking, but also it's not like they haven't been given ample provocation from Russia even in the context of an alliance of authoritarians.

Actually further down he thread someone said that the Chinese called on all parties to show restraint. They did nor single out Russia.

I haven't had time to check what has actually been said, though

The Israelis report that the Russians are pulling S-300 air defense systems out of Syria and shipping them to Ukraine.

www.timesofisrael.com/russia-sends-s-300-back-home-from-syria-amid-ukraine-invasion-satellite-images-show/

So it seems the AGM-88 missiles are causing significant losses for these systems.

I also saw an unconfirmed report that the UAF has decided it wants to acquire Swedish Grippens instead of the F-16, but that could be disinformation.

Russia is restocking. Presumably the reference to the Crimean bridge is to the Kerch Strait Bridge. Can Ukraine strike at this bridge? Is the US saying to Ukraine they cannot? I wonder whether it is considered Russian or Ukraine territory, seeing that it straddles the 2 land masses. Russia of course sees it as theirs (including Crimea).

newnamenewnew · 28/08/2022 07:53

In relation to the comments above about China making a thinly veiled threat to Russia, that is incorrect from what I have read. Geng Chuang said at a UN meeting called by Russia that all parties should work together to allow inspections and prevent disaster and that the international community should deescalate. Nothing about "russian roullette" from what I can see. Russia has called for inspections but it has to be safe which means shelling has to stop. Is it Ukraine or Russia? Well, we aren't there so we don't know for sure. But Russians are installed there and it is therefore somewhat unlikely they would be shooting on themselves.

newnamenewnew · 28/08/2022 07:53

Sorry, roulette not roullette

The below article is good, spelling out everything that's currently going wrong in all quarters. Found it quite overwhelming. We seem to be now be working on a strategy of "let's just hope it doesn't happen." I have no faith in our government during these dangerous times. Sometimes I hope that I am just living in a constant Twitter storm of panic and the situation in real life is more managed than it seems. I really hope that's the case!

I wondered just who was shooting there too but 1) I have 0 doubt that the Russians would fire on it and consider the soldiers as expendable if it was seen as useful to cause an accident and 2) I simply don't believe that Ukraine would cause a radiation on their own land. They aren't stupid, they know the stakes and they are trying to retake their own land.

It would be very typical of Russia to manufacture a crisis if it was in their own interests and all the evidence so far is that Russian soldiers' lives are not valuable to their commanders, in and of themselves.

ISW Key Takeaways

Volunteer battalions that comprise Russia’s 3rd Army Corps are likely being prepared to attempt offensive combined arms operations but will likely lack sufficient combat power to make a material difference on the battlefield.

Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command stated that a 10-person Russian sabotage and reconnaissance group attempted assault operations in Kherson Oblast, indicating that Russian offensive capabilities in Kherson Oblast have degraded further.

Russian forces conducted a limited ground attack north of Kharkiv City.

Russian forces conducted limited ground attacks southwest of Izyum, northeast of Siversk, northeast and south of Bakhmut, and west and southwest of Donetsk City.

Ukrainian forces targeted Russian airborne command-and-control elements in western Kherson Oblast.

Russian and Ukrainian sources traded accusations of shelling the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Russian military leadership may be shifting to a new phase of mobilization in central Russia and have likely exhausted pools of potential recruits in more peripheral and disenfranchised regions.

Russian authorities are intensifying law enforcement operations in occupied areas

The origins of the Chechnya war.

Russia watchers with good training and experience say that there is considerable evidence that the FSB planted bombs in the bottom of residential blocks in Moscow. They exploded and the FSB claimed they were Chechnyan, which gave the excuse for the wars there.

There are a number of reported incidents of Russian commanders shooting their own heavily wounded men instead of looking for aid.

The incident I know of was even worse than that, though I'm not going into details for at least two reasons. That was verifiably in a city where medical aid was available.

I was torn between doing a long reply or a short one, and have decided to keep it short, which is there is no evidence and there are allegations and reports both ways. I haven't seen any verified reports of Russians shooting their own men incidentally, but the thing you do not want to put here, please feel free to PM me if you want, to explain what you are talking about.

Ijsbear · 28/08/2022 15:01

It's extremely clear what I'm talking about and no, I won't be giving you the locate-able details ;)

Any comments on the investigative journalism about the FSB and the planted bombs?

Ijsbear · 28/08/2022 15:04

Really it comes down to this. Don't invade Ukraine and there won't be any problems with any commanders shooting their own men.
