⚡️ Shelling kills agricultural tycoon Vadatursky, his wife.
Oleksiy Vadatursky, 74, and his wife Risa Vadaturska were killed when Russian shelling hit their house in Mykolaiv in the early hours of July 31, said Vitaly Kim, the governor of Mykolaiv Oblast.

Vadatursky owned Nibulon, a large agricultural conglomerate. His net worth was estimated at over $400 million in 2021.

WSJ: "One of Ukraine’s biggest companies, Nibulon operates its own grains and oilseeds export port in Mykolaiv as well as grain-storage facilities across Ukraine with a capacity of 2.25 million tons, according to the company’s website. Mr. Vadaturskyi, 74, received in 2007 the country’s highest decoration, the Hero of Ukraine title, for his contribution to its development."

I feel sad about this. This tycoon would have every incentive and otherwise played a key role in rebuilding Ukraine's agricultural sector. I wonder whether Russia had targeted him for that reason.

UAF used HIMARS to attack a Russian train in the Kherson area that was carrying troops, supplies, and equipment.

twitter.com/Gerashchenko_en/status/1553714116702789633

This indicates that they had real-time intelligence about the location of the train. Clearing the wreckage and repairing the tracks will take days or more.

blueshoes · 31/07/2022 17:18

@MissConductUS Great news - the tweet says it is a HIMARS strike on the train of more than 40 cars that arrived from Crimea carrying troops, equipment and ammunition to Kherson region.

I am not sure if that train was moving or stationary at the time of the strike but apart from the up-to-the-minute intelligence to achieve that, it would have been an even more amazing hit if the train had been moving. That would be equivalent to a sniper hit using HIMARs from 10s of miles away.

What terrible news happily

a thread for the militarily experienced folk maybe, about why Russian hardware is struggling:

@blueshoes, hopefully, we will learn if the train was moving at the time or not. It's easy to stop a train. Just put a load of brush and rubbish on the tracks where it can be seen from way off and set it on fire. The train won't proceed until the tracks are clear.

Interesting thread @Ijsbear. I think he's very likely right. American weapons systems tend to be expensive but they are heavily automated and easy to use.

Serbian troops have entered Kosovo...

@MagicFox Sorry, being slow... why is this significant?

MagicFox · 31/07/2022 18:50

Not totally sure myself except there are NATO troops based in Kosovo (I think). And this may be russia-provoked? Others will have more insight...

I have a friend in Mykolaiv who says his death was definitely not an accident. He was apparently a very kind and generous man who did an awful lot for charity. Apparently they did not stop bombing from 1am till 5am last night.

Ijsbear · 31/07/2022 20:09

Hell. Im so sorry for your friend Hills Russians ... the worst curse word going.

ScrollingLeaves · 31/07/2022 20:20

The rumour is that the POWs within were deliberately moved there with a clear implication that it was planned to kill them. APparently by Wagner not Russia, which I don't believe. Plausible deniability since Wagner is officially independent

That is in WarTranslated isn’t it, including that bombs were laid inside then detonated?

Out of interest, why is it considered feasible that Ukraine bombed the POWs? Is it purported that they accidentally hit the barracks, and that it is coincidence the POWs were in that section and had only recently been moved there?

Another great loss to the country.

Apparently zelensky wanted to silence the POWs before they gave evidence to war crime investigators

Remarkable precision bombing when you see the layout of the prison

Ijsbear · 31/07/2022 21:42

The thought now is that a thermobaric bomb was chucked through a window.

Reports that the castrator is dead, but I'm not sure it's a reliable report.

minsmum · 31/07/2022 21:54

Someone has found thermal imaging that graves were dug at the prison the day before. Obviously this is not proven

ScrollingLeaves · 31/07/2022 22:11

This is a separate issue but I saw on Ukraine Twitter yesterday that Chinese soldiers are signing up to fight against Ukraine. It showed a photo of them. Do you think that’s true?

Ijsbear · 31/07/2022 22:12

I dread to think Scrolling. What was the origin of the photo do you know? I heard that rumour too and closed my eyes to it.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 31/07/2022 22:15

What amazes me is that my friend says there is still just under half of the population left. He and his wife are in the police and anyone who doesn't attend for work will be fired for good. When they do have time off, they leave the city towards Odesa to get some rest. They have a ten year old daughter, I can't imagine the stress.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 31/07/2022 22:20

Similar to soldiers signing up to Ukraine's foreign legion? Without their government's permission? Or with...

Ijsbear · 31/07/2022 22:57

It looks like NATO might be willing to step in.

I finally found it again. I think it is probably fake because looking on the replies there were comments saying ‘source?’ Of ‘photoshopped’ or ‘old pictures’ and I saw OSINT say they’re investigating.

katem98 · 31/07/2022 22:59

@Ijsbear What is this most likely to look like?

katem98 · 31/07/2022 23:19

"The president of Serbia, Vucic has already de-escalated the situation and said Serbia will go back into talks with the KFOR and Kosovo in its entirety.

The entire situation in Serbia today unfolded over the Kosovo plan to replace Serbian licence plates".

Just saw this on Twitter, please don't ask me where as I copied and pasted and wherever I found it disappeared, think I may have accidentally refreshed my feed?
