@Blossomtoes re the suit, exactly what we said. Trying to look like thatcher. It’s not a look that works for her.

Yes I was wondering if she had to trawl specialist vintage websites to unearth that ‘80’s pussy bow blouse - she looked like she was in fancy dress as Thatcher - desperate tactics.

kickupafuss · 15/07/2022 21:22

I wasn't impressed with any of them. Tom was good to say he thought Johnson was dishonest but he completely dodged the NHS question. Kemi came across well but I don't like her policies and she seemed conniving. I hadn't seen much of Penny before and I thought she was awful - clearly not up to the job. Truss and Sunak are too scarred by their association with Johnson.

GoingOnce · 15/07/2022 21:23

Is the media enthusiasm for Penny based on the fact that she’s an easy on the eye woman?? I can’t see any substance to her at all. Her trans views are dangerous. “A woman like me doesn’t have a penis” - ie. but other women do have penises. That comment alone should keep her out of govt for a very long time.

TBH I wouldn’t trust any of them. But I feel the same way (and more so) about the Labour lot.

I suppose it’s always the wrong sort of egotists who want to be prime minister. Decent people don’t want the hassle.

stillherenow · 15/07/2022 21:26

That's interesting that Kemi didn't appeal more in that survey . Maybe she appeals more to women. And I imagine the Tory membership is skewed to men

I was extremely hopeful for Liz Truss before this, but she was just insipid.

Its Kemi for me, Rishi for DH.

My father is a longterm Tory party member and I'm quite sure he would vote against a young black woman on principle. I'm sure he's not alone.

(Don't shoot the messenger. We're no contact. I 100% disagree with him.)

stillherenow · 15/07/2022 21:29

Twitter is hilarious about Liz Truss. I think she's toast

It is. Male, white, over the age of 60, living in the South East.

But that poll was the result of asking 'voters in general' not party members.

So Kemi doesn't appeal full stop, I guess. I agree, tbh.

Tory membership age and sex is an interesting one.

It is always assumed they are older but on the Jeremy Vine show today it was said that there is only about 6 month difference between the average age of Tory and Labour members.

It shocked me.

stillherenow · 15/07/2022 21:30

Ok I'm rooting for Tom. He'd appeal to that electorate and although a bit insipid he seems fairly honest

I hope so

But then PM has high numbers and I’m not convinced on her either

HotHeatDays · 15/07/2022 21:31

over the age of 60

Not according to Jeremy Vine show today. Mid 50s and similar average age to Labour member

XingMing · 15/07/2022 21:31

Interesting that you think Tom T lacks substance. As an army officer he will have run a group of very young men, and have been expected to deliver them to do their work. Probably only a year older than his squad, but with much higher expectations of performance. Regardless of the useless Rupert trope MN believes, the services are unforgiving of failure to deliver. People's lives depend on competence.

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2022 21:31

Tom I just can’t stand but I get people react well to him so I’d just deal with the dislike and put him above Truss and PM

xalo · 15/07/2022 21:32

Snap Opinium poll
Tugendhat 36%
Sunak 25%
Mordaunt 12%
Badenoch 12%
Truss 6%

He lead operations in a war zone. He is used to being calm and collected (on the outside at least)

FourTeaFallOut · 15/07/2022 21:33

I thought Tom did well but his slick style plus the big doe eyes at the doctor combined to channel shades of the opening monologue of Love Actually. It was a bit odd.

Kemi seemed straight talking and made Penny's long evasive answers look especially slippery. But I accept that may be my bias. Liz was disappointing, you can't just do big arms and hope decent content will fall out of your mouth. Rishi did fine but I don't think he exceeded anyone's expectations there.

JemimaPuddleducksWaddle · 15/07/2022 21:35

Like PP have said, Kemi needs to sort the eye rolling out. It became more obvious as the debate went on.

It doesn't adhere you to the public.

I know it's the wrong team but I just love Angela Raynor. Look at her standing up to all the Eton bully boys and holding her own. She is magnificent. Authentic and selfless. This is the kind of politician I want making policy.

Yes!!!!

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2022 21:37

Angela Rayner nooo

I don’t want that to happen
