Big slide in Penny's odds since debate night, maybe people are starting to realise she's a bit thick.
Big surge for Kemi.

Anyone watching the leadership debate ?

It doesn't seem to have had much impact on the betting odds. Still a 3 horse donkey race

This was on debate night

NightJohnBoy · 17/07/2022 12:14

Feck it, the Quote function doesn't copy images!
It's on page 13 for anyone interested

Blossomtoes · 17/07/2022 12:16

That doesn’t prove a thing. Everyone’s odds are drifting apart from Badenoke’s.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/07/2022 12:19

Tonight's debate should be interesting. If I was Penny Mordaunt I'd have spent the last 24 hours making sure I conveyed more coherence, character and attention to detail today versus Friday night's. I still think it's hers to lose.

All Liz Truss needs to do to lose this is keep talking. She is honestly one of the worst communicators I have ever seen, and patently not up to the task in either character or ability. It's frankly terrifying. I don't know if she's badly prepared, thick, or just nervous and not good at being on TV. But it's like someone took the worst parts of Theresa May's communication style and made it even more robotic and stilted. She looked sweaty and clammy, like a waxwork. I wondered if she was ill. And catch her off-script and she just freezes up. Not👏 good 👏 enough👏

Every time Rishi Sunak made that point about tough decisions being hard for him politically I want to punch the screen. Talk about entitled! The country doesn't care that making life-or-death decisions made life a bit harder for you at work, you perspective-free bellend.

I find myself quite captivated by Kemi Badenoch. I don't align with her politically whatsoever, but I find her way more coherent and human a communicator than most of the others. I actually think she'd make a good leader of the Conservative party, but in Opposition rather than government.

Tugendhat knows he won't win and is just trolling everyone else. He's clearly having the time of his life.

NightJohnBoy · 17/07/2022 12:20

I didn't say it proved anything, I was just wondering if people had thoughts on why candidates odds were changing.

Blossomtoes · 17/07/2022 12:27

I imagine the orchestrated smear campaign against Mordaunt is having some effect. Truss’s awful showing in the debate as well. Tugendhat went down incredibly well but the MPs have turned this into a three horse race so he doesn’t stand a chance, sadly.

ha at Tom T verdict, yep

I agree with most of this although imo it’s a shame Sunak’s wife’s wealth is a factor in all this rather than judging on policies alone

I thought Badenoch and Sunak agreed more generally with each other and would like to see them build a team if he gets it

Out of Truss and PM I’d take the latter despite some views I don’t agree with

Tegelflughafen · 17/07/2022 13:52

Peter Oborne(who has a good handle on Johnson and the current incarnation of the Tory party) suggests that whichever candidate is backed by the Murdoch media should be avoided at all costs. Without a doubt their policies will bolster the rich, diminish our civil liberties, undermine net zero and stoke up the culture war to blame someone else for their poor performance in government...

LadyEloise1 · 17/07/2022 14:39

@MarshaBradyo "......it's a shame that Sunak's wife's wealth is a factor in all this.... "

But Rishi Sunak knows that people will not anymore accept the " Do as I say not as I do" attitude from our politicians.
He's in charge of running the finances of the country using the taxes collected from people and business. His wife chose to be "non dom" with its tax implications.
She, apparently lives in the UK with Rishi and their children.,
Rishi chose to have a US Green card despite being an MP and a government minister.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/07/2022 14:47

I’m conscious this may not be the most coherent stance to have on this but I have enough reasons to be suspicious, unimpressed and unenthusiastic about Rishi Sunak himself without getting started on his wife.

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2022 14:51

Of course people can not want Sunak for whatever reason but I’d prefer if it came down to his polices. Whoever takes the role needs to manage the economy - to me that is a top priority

Some might think he’s not right to do that and some else is which is up to them but the personal side re his wealth isn’t part of it for me.

It was an easy win for whoever pushed the story and the media who ran with it, there’s no doubt it was damaging too but it’s a shame.

I’d first go with which economic policies do you want to see

Blossomtoes · 17/07/2022 17:17

So would I. And those policies include multi millionaires resident in the UK paying UK taxes.

chaosmaker · 17/07/2022 18:11

TT and PM were both rubbish on Sunday Morning earlier but then they are tories

XingMing · 17/07/2022 19:39

if that's the extent of of your comment, please go back to stacking shelves.

Well I'm pretty sure Labour MPs wouldn't be putting themselves up for Conservative leader.

Sweeping statememts about 'tories' are just that, sweeping statements.

HTH

I thought they were both OK actually. They’re definitely the best two out of the five.

Inkanta · 17/07/2022 20:07

I thought Penny gave as good as she got from Kemi.

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 20:10

Nothing asked at all about the NHS, immigration or education.

I find it fascinating when people talk about politicians as though 'they' come up with whatever policies by themselves, I thought it was generally known that other people did the hard graft/thinking for them ? Usually, if we are being honest, a whole host of civil servants and various consultants, do the messy collating figures/research/modelling etc. Then someone else will 'advise' the Minister if they should go with that policy or not, not always with the best interests of the country as a whole at heart, because the real game isn't about anything as mundane as that.

I agree with your point but not sure why mine was quoted as I didn’t imply it was the case that only politicians come up with it all.

Yes I agree there’s a whole raft of people behind the scenes - but it’s the top line broad message I’m hearing, I don’t really have a choice it’s the politicians who we hear from not civil servants etc .

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2022 20:33

Although even with all that behind the scenes the policy direction will be different given the leader - so it does make sense to vote for what you want

BirmaBrite · 17/07/2022 21:35

The problem with the Leadership race, is that we all know that they are simply out to get votes, and we all know how that plays out, 40 new hospitals anyone ? how is that panning out ? will it be forgotton now Boris is out ? does refurbishment count as 'new' ?
I have definitely hit that age where I can't even be arsed to pretend to be excited/upset by the endless lies, my eyes roll more than Kemi's Wink

I wasn't picking on you specifically @MarshaBradyo , its just what you said reminded me of why I find this whole rigmarole so tedious, its just so bloody fake ! Hopefully the circus will be over soon.

the80sweregreat · 17/07/2022 22:36

Even Penny Mordaunt said ' we've got seven weeks of this ' yeah, taking their eyes off the things that matter in the meantime :(
People are fed up with it all.

Galileu · 17/07/2022 23:06

With the exception of TT, I assume each one of them is simply saying whatever absolute bullshit is required of the moment.

I didn't think for one second that any of them cares one jot for the misery that the last 12 years have unleashed upon millions of people.

I think they will lie and lie and lie, and not give a shit who knows it.

Refusing to denounce the Rwanda disgrace is all I need to know - they are a bunch of slithering, inept, morally-bankrupt D-listers desperately having a grab at power.
