So much for inclusivity

Exclusive: LGBT+ Conservatives has asked every Tory leadership candidate to submit answers to 3 questions on a range of important issues affecting LGBT Tories by tomorrow. So far not a single candidate has submitted their answers.

Does it matter who is elected PM?
Right now, you could resurrect Margaret Thatcher and every talented politician of the last century into the cabinet and we will still be up that creek. When the bills hit home this autumn, people will stop being worried and started being pissed off.

I predict a GE before 2024.

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2022 23:41

I hope you’re right. We really need to get this lot out for a very long time as quickly as possible.

Roussette · 15/07/2022 06:17

Well... I watched BBC Question Time Last night. I usually avoid because of the Tory plants in the audience (not a theory... fact... there are certain audience members who are part of the audience three times in a row for instance spouting nonsense. We even had a 'Beergate' idiot last night who tried to say KS lies more than BJ!)

Anyway, my point is... Chris Bryant, Labour Rhondda MP and Chair of Committee for Standards was on FIRE 🔥🔥
It's really worth watching the first 10 minutes. He handled Tory Bim Afolami perfectly.
Minette Batters was brilliant too. As was the GenSec of the Education Union. The general mood was... changing the PM will not work.

Oh I might catch up on iPlayer then.
Normally I avoid because a) the audience (as mentioned) and b) the annoyance that is Fiona Bruce.

Same. I watch it much less now. Awful audience members who are clearly choreographed and Smuggy Bruce aren’t my idea of intellectual entertainment.

Yes, I usually avoid, but I just knew Chris Bryant would hold his own and oh yes, he did.

One funny bit was... Fiona Bruce has this habit of going to the audience, and if the audience member is railing against the Government, she always asks... and who do you vote for? Or... are you a Labour supporter? (she never asks this of ranting Tory audience members). Then if they say they vote Labour, she literally cuts them off and moves on.
Last night, she tried this... and a very lucid sensible audience member said.. 'I am just a human being with an opinion'.
What Fiona Bruce usually does didn't work this time.

An excellent article about our constitution and political system

Following up from a post yesterday The Times are reporting Mordaunt will appoint Leadsom as Chancellor.

Leadsom is running Mordaunt's campaign.

Quia · 15/07/2022 08:55

Braverman wants to eliminate the right to protection against torture and inhumane treatment, purely so that the ridiculous Rwanda policy will proceed. So not only has she admitted that the policy is inhumane (and I do hope that immigration lawyers everywhere have taken note), she wants to trash the safety of British citizens everywhere for her own political ambitions.

At this point I mostly want any candidate who can undertake that Braverman will never be allowed anywhere near a Law Office or cabinet post, and preferably that she will be deselected as an MP.

54isanopendoor · 15/07/2022 09:08

@Quia I couldn't agree more! Braverman is simply frightening.
Mind you, Johnson was quite happy to sacrifice the safety of British Citizens for his own ambitions (see Covid 19 response, see meeting Lebedevs chums solo) so I suppose his Cabinet of mediocrities see no shame in doing similar...

Minette Batters on QT last night

And a clip of Chris Bryant

DuncinToffee · 15/07/2022 09:35

Someone should ask Braverman if the ECHR should not apply to the two British men imprisoned by Russia then.

borntobequiet · 15/07/2022 09:36

I get up later now as I’ve reduced my work hours, but I used to listen to Farming Today nearly every morning and have always been impressed by Minette Batters. She always speaks clearly, factually and eloquently.
I must make the effort to listen on catch up. The presenters and interviewers on FT are all excellent too - and preponderantly female.

Cedilla · 15/07/2022 09:59

And yet when I got up this morning, there was the preposterous IDS on Today, blustering away about how the sacred Brexit must be protected, and how its great benefits can be reaped.

They are all insane. Totally and utterly brainwashed.

And completely out of touch. They’re presiding over an economy where people can’t afford to put petrol in their cars, hospitals are providing food banks, 3.6 children live in poverty, the list is endless. They themselves acknowledge the winter will be brutal and still they bang on about Brexit and knowing what a woman is. The very epitome of fiddling while Rome burns.

Lonelycrab · 15/07/2022 10:29

I expect Braverman would remain in her position if Truss wins, and also the influence of the erg would remain the driving force too. So I’m really hoping she doesn’t.

Although she’s going to look like the complete idiot she is as soon as she has to think on her feet. Tv debate will be interesting.

Unsurprisingly the Mail are backing her, or rather they’re not trying to smear her, in the same way as they’re attacking RS and PM.

itsgettingweird · 15/07/2022 10:44

As someone who'd had to endure Braverman for 7 years as their MP and has warned consistently about her I'm really glad she's come out and shown herself for what she is herself and voluntarily.

I also, hope people aren't blinded by the karts name and start to realise exactly who they are voting for.

I'd rather people spoilt than voted her in.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/07/2022 12:02

Agree entirely about QT last night. Bryant and Batters in particular were magnificent.

I also watch it rarely these days due to super-smug, arch Fiona Bruce.

itsgettingweird · 15/07/2022 12:48

Encouraged by you all I've managed to watch the first 25 minutes.

Just finished lunch and will get back to it.

Have to agree Chris Bryant is brilliant. He clearly does his research before he goes and knows what he's saying.

Roussette · 15/07/2022 12:59

I watched some of Truss's 'launch. Oh my! Part of me wants her to win through because she was just full of senseless words strung together to sound good, with no substance and the Tory party will be a laughing stock if they pick her!

Her presenting skills are so very very poor (pork markets!) and although I don't want a huge character type, I do want someone who can stand at a lectern and give a good lucid presentation. She beams with self satisfaction when anyone claps like a child being praised, looks like a rabbit in the headlights whilst thinking on her feet, and generally there is no gravitas whatsoever. KS would wipe the floor with her at the despatch box.

I missed the cost of living questions on QT last night and only saw the first half.
The NFU lady made a point early on that the new leader will be inexperienced about so many things ( I know Rishi Sunak was chancellor, but he has messed up things and hasn't been around that long )
She seemed worried that the big issues will just be overlooked until it's too late.
The public always make more sense than the ones answering the questions sometimes. The lady who asked why they have taken 12 years to address so many failings was spot on.
I don't mind Chris Bryant , but it's also true that the LP haven't told us any of their policies yet either.
I think people will become frustrated with this as well even if the argument is its a while till a GE and not giving too much away ?
Plus maybe they know the recession will really kick in around autumn time as well as higher fuel prices , but nobody is being honest about that really. It's all about another tory leadership battle and people furthering their own careers.
It is annoying people. Or maybe they have finally woken up a bit to what has been going on?
Who knows.

itsgettingweird · 15/07/2022 13:44

My favourite was the lady who pointed out the government have failed and having yet another leader and we have no say in this - and it's our country they are running.

I think so many members of the general public don't actually realise the government work for us. We elect them and we should have a say when they fuck it up and need a new leader.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/07/2022 13:47

Here we are about to enter a period of record-breaking, life-threatening (for ill, elderly) high temperatures coupled with ambulance and hospitals unable to cope currently. It is a disaster waiting to happen and will hit us in the next few days.

Where is the COBRA committee? Who is working on emergency measures to ameliorate this?

No one, that's who.

Fuck the fucking fuckers.
