It should be really heartening to have a black woman candidate in the Tory leadership race - imagine, having a black and female pm in the UK at last?! - but unfortunately as an individual Kemi Badenoch's behaviour, inexperience and hard right protestations make her a liability for the country and a poor role model.

As for popular posts about her on MN - if she can hack into a female MP's website as an adult woman and post what she did, I wouldn't put much past her and her supporters. Tory bots, anyone?

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 18:08

True! The Daily mail comments pages are a nest of vipers.

The daily Mail massive do not like Rich! Sunak at all.

He just needs to put on a leggy display and flash some underboob and he'll be just fine.

Ginajo · 13/07/2022 18:27

I've been shocked by DM comments over the last few days. Out and out racism. I suppose I shouldn't have been but it shows me that there are probably more people than we think who won't accept a person of colour as PM. Hugely disappointing. It should be on merit. I have very little positive to say about Johnson but I don't think he is racist and the cabinet were very diverse.

Blossomtoes · 13/07/2022 18:33

Nothing the DM or its readers say shocks me any more. It’s a cesspit.

WaitroseWoman · 13/07/2022 18:36

I would disagree about Johnson, not least because he has openly made racist remarks.

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 18:38

The conservatives are much more diverse than I gave them credit for to be honest although I'm shocked at myself that I didn't know this as I take an interest in politics in a general way.
I guess that I just see them as conservatives and not their heritage or where they were brought up or went to school.

Maybe, I was in the south, Stuttgart region but it was in the early nineties. Closer to the Deutschland 83 era Shock

Early 90's here too.

In cologne.

The daily Mail massive do not like Rich! Sunak at all.

All that does is make me think he'd be the best bet dispute not even really respecting him!

newnamethanks · 13/07/2022 19:02

Daily Mail racist? The Daily Mail that supported Mosely's fascist Blackshirts? And Farage? And Brexit? And Rwanda? That Daily Mail? What a surprise. I'm always slightly disturbed to see BAME people supporting the Tory party, suspecting a 'this far and no further' practice if not policy. We shall see.

tobee · 13/07/2022 19:19

It's also amazing what you read when people can post anonymously. So much easier now than having to get out pen and paper, buy a stamp and walk to a post box. Then you surround yourself with like minded people spilling out similar bile.

tobee · 13/07/2022 19:20

I think a lot of people think we've come far further on than many might think.

Notonthestairs · 13/07/2022 19:56

Have been reading some of the Badenoch threads.

They are voting in the dark frankly.

None of the candidates have given sufficient explanations - partly I suspect because they don't want to, partly because the press have been embarrassingly fawning over them.

Ridiculous to tie your vote to a candidate you next to nothing about.

Notonthestairs · 13/07/2022 19:56

You know next to nothing 🙄

tobee · 13/07/2022 20:10

Not surprising when it's been all about Boris Johnson and his amazing personality

"What issues are you most passionate about? (Pick up to 4)

Cost of living 43%
Channel crossings/refugees 32%
Grow economy/unemp 32%
NHS 24%
Ukraine 19%"

They are as passionate about Channel crossings/refugees as they are about growing the economy? Confused

The Badenoch threads seems to have given some posters are few more things to think about, especially about her views on education.

That thread’s a bit of a revelation, it’s good to see so many posters haven’t swallowed the “but they know what a woman is” Koolaid.

As someone who works locally with children with severe semh difficulties and within special education Kemi scares me the most.

I've changed some kids lives around and without finding for superfluous support staff like me most wouldn't even get into a school let alone get an education.

It's a job I feel privileged to do. Watching a 9/10yo child who has been in 7 foster homes in their lives form relationships and trust with adults is wonderous. Having them wanting to come to my office for lunch is an honour as I know I've earned their trusts
I don't feel like their privileged to have me - but that I'm privileged to get to be part of their journey towards a stable future.

So

I think it would be an interesting discussion to have with any potential Prime Minister to see their thoughts on the ageing population. We are getting older - so fewer younger people. This will have an obvious effect on our society. Fewer people available to support the demands of an ageing population.

But I know that is too long term thinking for some people out there.
