"Home Secretary Priti Patel has pulled out of a grilling by the Home Affairs Committee this morning. The committee says: "She has declined to attend our session". Unclear why."

Public service and all that.

ERG vote seems to be splintering - 60 votes between them.

I think around half the Conservative MPs don't have a stated choice as yet. No doubt waiting to see who dangles them a job.

Liz Truss might be a gift to the remainers as they can play her speech about the EU on a loop ! ( it was played on lbc radio today from 2016) it's weird ( to me anyway ) that Rees Mogg and Nadine are backing her.

Penny Mordant will shut down the ' only tories know what a woman is ' debate and make some mumsnetters politically homeless I suppose.
Badenoch isnt good for state schools ; maybe her views on this should also be played to all the STLs and TAs in schools as a warning that someone who didn't go through the British education system herself ( according to her wiki page anyway ) seems to know more than the ones actually running a school.

New: Government admits trying to alter Channel 4's annual report so it was more positive about privatisation.

Will that come up in the debate C4 is hosting on Friday?

Oooohhh I hope so. That'll be an interesting question to watch being answered.

DuncinToffee · 13/07/2022 10:32

She was due to answer questions this morning on issues including the Rwanda migrant deal, violence against women, policing and passport delays

Fluff, I guess

Notonthestairs · 13/07/2022 10:33

I'm convinced Patel missed the last select committee too.

DuncinToffee · 13/07/2022 10:36

Bit of a different question, has anyone watched 'Undeclared War' on c4? I have just started it and am now questioning so many thing on SM, especially now with all the campaigning.

itsgettingweird · 13/07/2022 10:41

No I haven't but it sound interesting so it's something I'll add to my watch list.

Yes, I had a bit of a binge with it at the weekend but haven't finished it as I have the little GC here and want to have a bit of quiet to enjoy it. By the time I get them to bed and settled I'm past watching anything. I don't think the heat is helping them sleep.

I think it is very interesting and yes it does make you wonder what is going on. Their timing was great wasn't it.

Booklover3 · 13/07/2022 10:49

If they’ve blocked Labour with the no confidence motion… what can Labour do now?

Cedilla · 13/07/2022 11:03

Going back to Johnson and his alleged visits abroad, it’s definitely worth listening to the Londongrad podcasts that Paul Caruana Galizia made, if you can. Chilling stuff but it feels important (I listened free, definitely didn’t have to pay, but you may need to give them an email addresss, I think)

David Allen Green on Conservatives blocking the VONC

Essentially it is not for the Government to decide when the votes happens.

Yes. Absolutely fascinating and made me feel incredibly naive, particularly around the use of bots etc.

I don't think I'm a bot, but who knows? (No, I do know really; Descartes covered that one).

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 12:26

I did watch undeclared war and although I was aware of ' bots' trolls and those who hack accounts , I wasn't aware that it was such a big business or how they did it.
It is scary what goes on and I'm sure it wasn't all made up for tv and is based on facts.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/07/2022 12:59

You only have to look at the more political threads on here to see the bots popping up.

The Salisbury poisoning threads in particular were a real eye-opener for me.

guinnessguzzler · 13/07/2022 12:59

No, it definitely is made up and doesn't really happen @the80sweregreat you are 100% wrong.

Aargh, oh no, maybe I am a bot after all? 😂

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 13:21

I'm Not a bot !
I was sort of aware of its existence and I know that MN gets them , but I didn't think anymore than that really , I just assumed they were constantly deleted and popped up elsewhere. It can't be easy keeping track of them I suppose.

TokyoSushi · 13/07/2022 13:23

Penny Mordaunt has just turned out to be a massive favourite in the first YouGov poll just released. Sunak won't like that at all. If I were him, and had his money, I'd just sack the whole thing off and go on an epic summer holiday.

I’ve got it on my watch list. Is it in the same vein as brexit: the untold story? (I think that’s what it’s called - Benedict cumberbatch so should be pretty easy to find)

I don’t care that it ‘appears’ vengeful or whatever, I want Boris Johnson properly scrutinised. The Lebedev admissions warrant it alone imho.

guinnessguzzler · 13/07/2022 13:31

@TokyoSushi That's what I'd do all the time. That's what I really don't understand. What do these people do with their money and why do they spend their time on this shit when they could be having much more fun, or actually making a positive difference, elsehow? I just don't understand it.

EXCLUSIVE:

The UK government is trying to block disclosures to the COVID inquiry, according to people with knowledge of legal advice received by ministers

Huge questions for any future PM as the inquiry will be a major political problem at next election

A few weeks ago, Sir James Eadie QC, the "Treasury Devil" who is the govt's top lawyer, advised ministers to limit the scope of information provided to the inquiry

Eadie warned ministers they faced vast claims from families of COVID victims

We are going to struggle to get the truth.

Fladdermus · 13/07/2022 13:48

Just seen that BJ is tabling his own VONC in the tory government. He needs to stop playing silly buggers and just fuck off.

Whaaaaat? Does he realise he is responsible for the government? Unless you listen to Janie that is!

Some are saying it will be worded in such a way that it will fail and then further attempts to have one by Starmer will be blocked on that basis. Others are saying it's his move to stay in power. Trigger a GE, win massively, claim the mandate as your own and refuse to resign on that basis.

itsgettingweird · 13/07/2022 14:05

Fucking hell.

Is anyone one of our top lot in it for us - the people they work for - or just themselves and their personal egos?

Tugenhat is faster becoming my favourite to win. Purely based on the fact he seems genuine (I get appearances can be deceiving) and is the only one so far without a proven track record of deceit or back stabbing.

Awaits Twitter link to prove me wrong!
