What's with the table banging?

It really is an odd club with strange traditions which aren't becoming for people with such power.

It's a way to show us how in touch and modern the Tory party are

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 17:10

They like banging tables. It's a thing
If my charges at school tried this they would be sent to the head !

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 17:10

The tories in touch..
.. with an expenses sheet

tobee · 13/07/2022 17:13

Is it a blow to Rees Mogg and Dorries that Truss didn't do do well? Or is it part of a grand plan?

tobee · 13/07/2022 17:14

*do too well

DuncinToffee · 13/07/2022 17:15

They bang the table in classes in Germany at the end of the lesson to thank the teacher, but in a short and civilised manner.
(at least they did in the uni where I was on an exchange program many moons ago)

DuncinToffee · 13/07/2022 17:24

Beth Rigby

What next? One MP points out Zahawi & Hunt's votes won't move to the right candidates Truss/Braverman/Badenoch, but will split btwn Mordaunt & Sunak

Right vote split btwn 3 candidates at moment. If those votes shift to Truss in later rounds she'll be picking up real momentum

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2022 17:31

I am getting stressed about the idea that Badenoch might win. She seems to be winning attention on MN.

Members will like her ultra right proclamations. She could do such enormous harm and no one sensible is around to talk her down.

tobee · 13/07/2022 17:31

When is round 2?

Tomorrow. I keep losing this thread, so pleased I’ve found you all again.

It seems people are attracted by the (relatively) unknown faces doesn't it? Most people don't do detail. They go for someone on very basic reaction to the candidate. You would hope that it would be more forensic with Tory MPs. But they'll have an eye on who they think can win them the election. Being tainted by Boris Johnson not seen as a good thong

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 17:36

I'm concerned about Kemi too.
I think she's a loose cannon but saying all the right things to appeal to the daily Mail readers
She doesn't like teachers, tax cuts etc

tobee · 13/07/2022 17:38

Well the key thing is will she pick up Zahawi and Hunt votes? Will that be enough to get her over the threshold?

If any of my pupils banged a desk I'd clear the nearest pupils away as it's probable they'd punch a person next 🤣🤣 (special Ed with some really complex SEMH difficulties)

She will absolutely damage education.

There is already a recruitment and retention problem.

Her campaigners are working hard....

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2022 17:45

Lots of approving desk rapping in Deutschland 83.

tobee · 13/07/2022 17:46

Idk I just don't see Badenoch getting through

Just asked dd about whether she experienced any on her year abroad in her German university. She said no. 😀

tobee · 13/07/2022 17:48

(Maybe it's regional?)

itsgettingweird · 13/07/2022 17:50

I did a few German exchanges in my teens and never witnessed table banging.

However I did witness how much better their teaching of foreign languages is than ours!

DuncinToffee · 13/07/2022 17:53

Maybe, I was in the south, Stuttgart region but it was in the early nineties. Closer to the Deutschland 83 era Shock

the80sweregreat · 13/07/2022 18:01

The daily Mail massive do not like Rich! Sunak at all.

tobee · 13/07/2022 18:04

Dd was in the far north.

I did an exchange in the 80s to the Aachen area and attended the local Gymnasium for a couple of days. The students and staff were very relaxed, feet up on the edge of the table and own clothes. I'm sure students with feet on tables would give many Mumsnetters fainting fits and Pearl clutching. But they were very well behaved, intelligent and engaged.

To be honest though does the Daily Mail readership actually like anyone?
