She was something on health and social care? I remember a car crash interview she did during the pandemic!

Was she the one who kept laughing and Piers Morgan kept asking her what was so funny?

CanYouNotReadTheSign · 07/07/2022 08:18

Given that government can't function properly now, surely a physical (and mental health) intervention is required to get Bojo out? This has all been depressingly predictable since his journo days. He's been enabled for years.

Peregrina · 07/07/2022 08:20

I hold no brief for Liz Truss but she's literally spent the last 18 hours en route to Jakarta via Dubai to represent the UK at the G20 - she touched down a couple of hours ago. She's the one member of government who has a cast iron reason not to resign or to say anything that would prompt him to sack her.

Well, not until she's finished taking selfies with people more important than her.

Sky reporting that a resignation letter for Johnson is being drafted - but some Cabinet members are urging him to stay on.

Utterly delusional now.

Yes, true, I'm sure they don't care one jot for the victims, they just realised it really was too much to try to defend when the rest of us would have stopped at cake (or earlier!).

I think it's because the victims were too close to home for comfort.

Whips are positions of power and influence. We presumably all know that part of the role is leaning on MPs to do what they're told, and at the extremes this has on occasion looked like coercion and blackmail. Putting a known sex pest in that position, giving them power, potentially put (male) MPs themselves at greater risk of sexual harassment.

Plus also some of them will have been young staffers themselves, so they can identify in a way they can't with a single mother who was stuck in a small flat with no garden and nowhere for her kids to play during lockdown while Boris and co were having parties up the wazoo. It hits home more.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 08:22

Truss will be very happy that she's been able to stay out of this and return with "clean hands".

RedToothBrush · 07/07/2022 08:24

Tbf to liz truss and priti patel there is an issue with national security if they resign at this point. There will be no one to sign off important security issues...

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 08:25

"It’s always about the pursuit of power, being first among equals, and this is an example of how that ultra-competitive thinking between a tiny, select group of peers can take a whole country and economy down with it, and the super elite protagonists jockeying for position won’t even notice, let alone care.

They’re not behaving like public servants because they never were public servants. Its all about power and getting one over on someone else. Like the vindictive sacking of Gove shows, at a time when there is a national shortage of experienced Cabinet ministers. "

Agree with all of this. They are a cabal.

Igotjelly · 07/07/2022 08:25

Liz Truss is busy rubbing shoulders with Lavrov if reports that he's attending the G20 are true. The woman is a security concern in and of herself.

This a powerful statement and totally agree.

If you look back over the 3 word slogans and sound bites we use to make the pies out of it all goes back to this

"World leading"
"First...."
Etc.

Even when he's floundering he'll suddenly pause, halt and begin one of these sentence starters.

Hadn't thought of that.

We really are teetering on the brink of God knows what. I've been relying on the men in grey suits to bring order.

CredibilityProblem · 07/07/2022 08:27

It was obvious what Johnson was like since he was car reviewer at GQ. It was all right there.
The only thing the article below doesn't include is that the odometer readings frequently made it clear that he'd never driven the cars he reviewed, because no Johnson career would be complete without an element of blatant lying.

Yes I'd forgotten about Patel. The Home Secretary needs to sign off a load of things in person by law.

Yes!!!! That's what I remember.

Although she was dire Morgan as usual was just as bad and didn't come off well either.

And yes, depending on what's going on behind the scenes at NATO, Wallace may legitimately be able to argue that there needs to be a competent minister in place to take urgent decisions that legally require ministerial sign-off. Not resigning but calling for Johnson to go would carry too high a risk that he'd be sacked.

It is a bit reminiscent of Major, though, when he found a reason to keep out of the way whilst everyone else knifed Thatcher for him.

From Sky News, confirming what we suspected - "Allies of Priti Patel have indicated she is only staying in post due to her responsibilities for high level police and intelligence operations."

"Some cabinet members" probably means GoNads and Mogg.

So she's effectively said she would resign if she could. I'd count her and Braverman as nos. 54 and 55 (if I've got the current figures right, I'm losing track).
