Back in May wasn't a Conservative MP arrested over rape and sexual assault offences ?

Yes, he's still on bail.

itsgettingweird · 07/07/2022 07:16

So I've just watched Bravermans interview on Peston.

I'm taking it after that speech about being afforded opportunities in Britain if she actually makes PM she won't be sending planes full of refugees to Rwanda?

balalake · 07/07/2022 07:18

Either Mr Johnson is an alcoholic (opinion based on having family members who were) or he perhaps is having a mental breakdown. I don't think that it is enough to have him sectioned under the Mental Health Act though.

They should all be utterly ashamed of themselves for enabling him for so long, when it was in their interests, and that it took an alcoholic sexually assaulting some men to finally spur them in to action

I agree, they should be ashamed but I don't think it was anything to do with an alcoholic sexually assaulting men. I think it was seeing the blatant sending out of Ministers to deliberately lie to the public day after day and the timeline being that each lie was shown up as a lie very quickly. I think Ministers and MPs were shocked at how they were blatantly being used to cover for BJ. I don't think they cared a damn for any victims.

Yes, true, I'm sure they don't care one jot for the victims, they just realised it really was too much to try to defend when the rest of us would have stopped at cake (or earlier!).

Igotjelly · 07/07/2022 07:19

Another one - Damian Hinds, Security Minister. That's 49 now.

Igotjelly · 07/07/2022 07:22

And we're at 50! George Freeman, Science Minister.

CredibilityProblem · 07/07/2022 07:23

On the Pincher issue the Tory MPs who Johnson addressed in the tearoom were left incandescent by his twin takes of:
"Why didn't the people there prevent Pincher from doing it?"(when actually he was physically manhandled out of the door)
"how did this get into the newspapers?"

They were properly shocked by his attitude and lack of moral compass. You could see it on the MP who stood up at PMQs. Which makes me wonder if they'd ever met him before frankly.

And we're at 50! George Freeman, Science Minister.

And the resignation letter is particularly scathing - "The chaos at Number 10, the breakdown in Cabinet responsibility, the abandonment of the ministerial code, the defence of impropriety & defiance of parliament are insults to Conservatism"

I know the Daily Mirror nicks stories from here daily.

But they've nicked the line "Get exit done" (from Cornetto I think) and it's their front page headline.

@Cornetto, you should claim copyright.

ClaudineClare · 07/07/2022 07:28

How long can this be allowed to go on? We have no functioning government.

Lingoflaming · 07/07/2022 07:29

Obviously Boris hasn't considered that the longer this circus goes in for, he won't be offered another gig in another circus... The brand Johnson is toxic now and not good for anyone to be associated with although he can't see this at all....

the80sweregreat · 07/07/2022 07:29

Power corrupts and this is what happens
The word ' insane ' is being banded about a bit this morning by people who probably voted to keep him only the other week. Or hinted at.
The dipping his hands in blood comment he made is chilling I think , it's not the words of the someone who has full capacity to continue to work and run a country which may well crash and burn around him taking us all with him.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 07/07/2022 06:34

Back in May wasn't a Conservative MP arrested over rape and sexual assault offences ?

Chris Bryant asked him a question at the Liaison Committee about whether he knew of any other allegations of sexual offences. I suspect it was aimed at that.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 07:30

Johnson and his media are framing him as standing up to the Remainer Conservatives.

Johnson represents the people, the Conservatives MPs the elite (as opposed to Islington elite).

He's going to make this as messy as possible.

And it's all been so very very predictable.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 07:31

"The dipping his hands in blood comment he made is chilling I think , it's not the words of the someone who has full capacity to continue to work"

It's exactly how Trump/Orban would play it. It's not an accident. It's intended to incite.

picklemewalnuts · 07/07/2022 07:32

Can he actually do anything? I mean, does he as an individual have any power? At this stage could he go out in a blaze of glory, doing something dramatic? Otherwise he's at risk of being a damp squib, which he won't like.
Sorry for my ignorance!

He's misread the British public who unlike the Americans won't take up arms on behalf of a bunch of privileged arse holes who hold them in contempt

picklemewalnuts · 07/07/2022 07:34

In terms of how he's seen by the wider population, I was in a group yesterday where a woman said she liked him, but he'd have to go now.

Another said
"Poor Boris, he's got so much on his plate and they're all pick pick pick nit picking at him. It's not fair."

My jaw nearly hit the floor.

ClaudineClare · 07/07/2022 07:34

Only the terminally stupid will buy that one. Braverman has been the first to throw her hat in the ring. She is a hardline Brexiteer.

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 07:36

ClaudineClare · 07/07/2022 07:28

How long can this be allowed to go on? We have no functioning government.

This is the point. Johnson thinks he can just appoint any stooge to any post because he has lots of MPs, but once you take out the ones who have resigned and the 75% of backbench MPs who voted against him at the last VONC, he doesn't have enough cannon fodder. And that's before you take into account the fact that he can't assume everyone asked will accept office under him. Surely at some point action has to be taken if the normal business of government cannot happen?

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 07:36

"He's misread the British public who unlike the Americans won't take up arms on behalf of a bunch of privileged arse holes who hold them in contempt"

Agree - but it's intended to portray him as embattled war hero protecting Brexit and therefore the will of the people.

the80sweregreat · 07/07/2022 06:39

Quentin Letts has just hinted on GMTV that Boris Johnson has a mental illness and needs to be taken to rehab ( or somewhere similar)
Extraordinary times.

I said that yesterday and I wasn’t joking.

He needs sectioning / The Priory. He’s very far gone on alcohol and powder now. It’s right in front of us.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 07:39

Claudine - I think Braverman will run on a protect Brexit ticket too.

But yes only the paranoid will buy it. The Sun/Mail have misjudged the mood I think and I don't think they can turn it.

Cornettoninja · 07/07/2022 07:39

This is an example of exactly what I and others have been saying. People follow BJ (who is just a figurehead at the end of the day) thinking they’re on the same side not realising that feeling isn’t mutual. Never has been. And this is within his own team, the great unwashed don’t even feature.

Musing on it further last night I realised that Leave have done exactly what the ‘west’ do internationally. Install a leader to do their bidding then lose control because only a maniac would do what they want. BJ is a very English Gaddafi.
