What’s the worst racist incident you have experienced?

I’ve had quite a few:

Students in secondary school have pulled my hijab off.

After the 9/11 a group of boys threw paper balls at me and shouted “Taliban” at me.

The day after a terror attack in London, a man pulled his window down and called me a dumb whore. There was no one else around.

Walking back from school, a man told me, “Go back to your own country”.

On my way to college, I got on the bus and a woman said, “I don’t know why you would want to draw attention to yourself by wearing that”.

It doesn’t count because, as explained a multitude of times now, racism = prejudice + institutional power.

And it has been explained that this is one definition of racism referring to institutional or societal but not individuals of any colour being racist.

Questions for all the white people who experienced racism. Do you leave your home steeling yourself for the micro aggressions you know will happen today? Is someone going to ask you ‘no where are you really from’? In a restaurant will you be seated next to a toilet, or in a dark corner out of sight from the main diners? Have someone say to you ‘gosh you speak so well’? Do people hold their bags tighter when you walk past them or cross the road? Do you ever sit in a work environment, look around you and think am I really good at my job or was I just a box to be ticked? Have people ever said to you ‘I tried a bit of shepherds pie once’

Stuff like this happen to you everyday? Everywhere you go?

Cameleongirl · 03/07/2022 16:56

@frostyant So you’re talking about experiences of racism in Britain? What do you think happens on countries that aren’t majority white?

@MrsPear sorry I’m confused as to why you have addressed me?

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 17:25

And quite frankly I find the Black Lives Matter mob as offensive as the national front. They all breed division and hatred.

Wow didn’t take long for the ‘All Lives Matter’ lot to start did it. What a disgusting comment.
I can’t even be bothered to get into why black lives matter and why stating that, does not mean anyone else’s lives matter even less

Daydreamsinsantafe · 03/07/2022 17:28

@pedropony76 and they’re akin to the NF. What can you even say..

Aria999 · 03/07/2022 17:30

There was a girl on TV (I am in America) shortly after the election who said 'black lives matter' should not be a political statement.

She was right. Everyone should think Black Lives Matter. Only, in America they clearly don't.

If you really think this movement of people trying to protect their live ones and their right to live free from fear (even if their methods are not always perfect ) is equivalent to the national front then... I have no words.

Aria999 · 03/07/2022 17:31

You find BLM as offensive as the National Front?

I remember when the NF showed up at the gates of my junior school in the early 70s, with Union flags and placards, right outside, at the time we should have been leaving. It was near Birmingham and a very diverse area for back then. Us white kids didn't really know what was going on at first but our black/Sikh/Muslim/Hindu classmates and friends did and were very scared. We'd got half way across the playground before the chants started, N word, P word. It was utterly horrible. We were all taken back indoors. It took the police being called and a near riot before they were moved.

You think BLM are as bad as that? Well, lots of people with a vested interest said the same about Martin Luther King. They were wrong too.

And there we are. Doesn't take long for the "racism experienced by me, white person, is just as important and racist as racism experienced by brown person" individual to show exactly what they are.

HRTQueen · 03/07/2022 17:51

National Front belief is that white people are superior and non white people have no place in the UK. Proud to be racist and their aim is to cause division

Black Lives Matter has come about because of racist views and actions it’s a movement that wants equality and fairness

simply put for those that struggle to understand

RedWingBoots · 03/07/2022 17:54

@HRTQueen waste of a post because however much it's explained to them they refuse to understand.

Can you even imagine… what sort of nonsense

HRTQueen · 03/07/2022 17:58

Yes that’s true RedWingBoots

Aria999 · 03/07/2022 18:08

Who is 'them'?

I believe white people can sometimes experience racism, though currently people of color experience it much more.

I believe Black Lives Matter and that comparing this movement to the national front is deeply offensive.

Also the thread is so far off the rails that it's fallen into a pond three miles from the railway line.

Not one person has said that, so please don’t twist things either.

We’ve established not all prejudice is racism but the post was open to all and by posting an experience people aren’t saying that black/brown people don’t have it much worse.

Tillsforthrills · 03/07/2022 18:14

Comparing the NF to BLM post should be deleted tbh.

Flammkuchen · 03/07/2022 15:45

@IrisVersicolor Isn’t suggesting Jewish people aren’t really white or European a bit racist?

I didn’t say they weren’t “really white” I said they are “racially distinct” from the white Europeans who have not experienced racism. As both have a long history of racism and persecution.

IrisVersicolor · 03/07/2022 18:36

Jewish peoples are Semites (hence anti-Semitic) and the Roma have their roots in northern India.

That’s fascinating about the Roma people, I’m going to read up on that.

BLM is in no way comparable at all to the NF.

The NF promotes white supremacy and BLM promotes equality for Black people. They're about as opposite as can be.

There is nothing offensive about equality for Black people.
