What’s the worst racist incident you have experienced?

Hope54321 · 02/07/2022 14:01

I’ve had quite a few:

Students in secondary school have pulled my hijab off.

After the 9/11 a group of boys threw paper balls at me and shouted “Taliban” at me.

The day after a terror attack in London, a man pulled his window down and called me a dumb whore. There was no one else around.

Walking back from school, a man told me, “Go back to your own country”.

On my way to college, I got on the bus and a woman said, “I don’t know why you would want to draw attention to yourself by wearing that”.

OP posts:

And there we are. Doesn't take long for the "racism experienced by me, white person, is just as important and racist as racism experienced by brown person" individual to show exactly what they are.

And here we are again. Racism is only one way. OK.

Perhaps this thread should be deleted. It's heartbreaking that people can compare BLM, an organisation that literally fights for the lives of black people, to a hateful and sadistic organisation such as NF.

Waiting for the posters to rock up to say that BLM are all Marxist anarchists with a hidden agenda to overthrow capitalism (that works so well for its white members).

Teacher amended my dd's family tree that she took to school
😮
What on earth to @Pinklimey ?

Saying that the names weren't real

Daydreamsinsantafe · 03/07/2022 19:55

@Heistonabike i think it should stay to serve as evidence of how quickly, without provocation, people will reveal their true thoughts.

Im can’t even feign mild surprise that this is where this thread has wound up.

Saying that the names weren't real

The teacher would have swiftly had a meeting called with me.

And the reward for trolling the thread & pissing everyone off goes to... @MrsPear

By friend with ginger hair has been subjected to absolutely hideous abuse , as we grew up and fhen as we started to go out as Teens and older.

She was /is very beautiful but it didn't stop all the name calligraphy and general abuse.

It must be so difficult for her to experience that.

Daydreamsinsantafe · 03/07/2022 20:44

I’m laughing now. What a thread 😆😆

I thought twice about posting my original comment for exactly this reason. I thought I was pretty explicit that I appreciated I was fortunate not to experience horrendous comments based on my race very often because I do appreciate the difference between being subjected to it all the time (and in a structural way) vs getting the occasional shock when it's directed your way because you don't expect it.

The OP asked for examples of racism which they must know is understood by the majority of the population - not least thanks to the dictionary - to be simply discrimination or prejudice based on race. It's also not surprising given this site is UK based - a majority white country - that there are a fair number of posters who are white on here. Not because it's anywhere near as common per white person as per person for other groups, but because there are more white people in the potential pool (who might each have had one or two experiences) vs far fewer, say, black people but who will have many, many experiences each.

Maybe the thread was intentionally hoping to goad exactly this discussion or, if they really intended white people not to comment, it was just a poorly worded title, OR maybe the idea was to show how much more serious the examples are for minority ethnic groups than for white people (which, generally, I think has been shown). If the OP wanted to talk only about experiences of racism by black people, Asian people or any other demographic I think that is perfectly reasonable and would stay off it, but you do need to make it clear.

Out of interest, would anyone whose definition of racism is prejudice+power order a woman who'd been seriously sexually assaulted by another woman off a thread asking about experiences of rape because it isn't technically rape (which must be done with a penis), particularly in the nasty, dismissive tones demonstrated on this thread ("It's. Not. About. You")? Or would you give a little more grace to those commenting on what they reasonably assumed to be the spirit of the thread as named?

Fancydancer1934 · 03/07/2022 21:30

This thread asked what for personal stories. It didn't specify who should answer. Maybe next time it should specify which race is permitted to answer. That will stop those pesky white people pretending to be victims won't it.

@Heistonabike I think the former BLM executive director did describe herself as a Marxist at one point, not sure whether she continued identifying as such.

Alternatively, you could stop whitesplaining and listen.

OfficerArrestThatRuffian · 03/07/2022 22:05

I've read every post on this thread.

pedropony76 · 03/07/2022 22:05

Seeing as this thread has now made Reddit and people are copying and pasting comments to chat shit. I think I’ll exit the conversation!

OfficerArrestThatRuffian · 03/07/2022 22:10

Posted too soon. Listening doesn't automatically lead to agreeing with what someone has to say.

And honestly, the fact you think it's appropriate to use a racial term to insult someone on this thread of all threads is just nuts to me.

What is whitesplaining?

The organisation BLM have already admitted this. They described themselves as trained Marxists. The organisation is clearly different from the movement itself, and it's important to recognise that difference

You’re not actually listening.

It’s not an insult, it’s a description of a type of attitude.

How would you feel if the term whitesplaining was replaced with black? Would you find that insulting? Or is it a case of one rule for me and one rule for thee?

The op hasn’t been back since pg 2 that I can see, but their one comment seemed to be acceptance of all. As did MNHQ’s.

There is so much hostility coming from so many different groups with so many agendas, many not with good intentions, it’s difficult to have serious conversations over the internet.

Let’s be absolutely clear: it is whitesplaining that is insulting. I simply gave an unfortunate attitude a name.

This implies you don’t actually get what the term means.

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 03/07/2022 23:17

@IrisVersicolor so please explain to me what you mean by whitesplaining.
