What’s the worst racist incident you have experienced?

Hope54321 · 02/07/2022 14:01

I’ve had quite a few:

Students in secondary school have pulled my hijab off.

After the 9/11 a group of boys threw paper balls at me and shouted “Taliban” at me.

The day after a terror attack in London, a man pulled his window down and called me a dumb whore. There was no one else around.

Walking back from school, a man told me, “Go back to your own country”.

On my way to college, I got on the bus and a woman said, “I don’t know why you would want to draw attention to yourself by wearing that”.

@Brideandprejudice yet you won’t ’back up’ how the constant racism you face occurs when no one even knows you are Roma.
That in itself implies everything is fine until the revelation that you aren’t white. So the whiteness is ok? Were you to conceal the truth all would be well?

I still can't believe you're saying I should hide my race just so I can be accepted by society. Do you not realise how offensive that is? Would you tell a Muslim woman to just take off her hijab for the same reason?

People do know I'm a gypsy. Not all people, but many can spot us. I've had it said to my face time and time again so I don't know who you think you are, trying to invalidate my experiences.

Here is where I don’t agree with you.

Why are you diminishing her experience of blatant racism? Why do you try and tell her she’s privileged?

I know a Roma gypsy when I see one and so do shop keepers, restaurant staff and others based on her experience. To say that people won’t know she’s Roma because of the colour of her skin is disgusting.

Why do you feel her experience of racism is an affront to yours? I am light skinned like you and have experienced racism but I wouldn’t dream of speaking to someone the way you’ve spoken to her!

@loopyfruit they don’t meet lots of peoples criteria and further back someone gives a list of examples yet here you are tap dancing with me.

Just dodging the question because you know you can't answer it straightforwardly.

Daydreamsinsantafe · 04/07/2022 13:47

@Tillsforthrills she herself said no one knows. She went for an interview and the person interviewing her did not identify her as such & she presents as white. Entirely their words.

@loopyfruit yes you’ve got me totally worked out. You win

very very melodramatic. “Wouldn’t dream of talking to someone that way!!”.
Totally civil comments getting pantomime D

Very silly.

I've been thinking about this thread past couple of days. It's really got to me if I'm honest. There's a few reasons for this is. Being an empathetic sensitive type I am reading these incidents and it hurts me deeply to read about the things people have been through. But you know, I realise the saddest part for me, is the discussion and bickering and arguing around it all. Leaves me feeling like racism Will always exist. There is always going to be power play between people. and that thought alone just makes me feel deeply depressed.

Brideandprejudice · 04/07/2022 14:02

Thank you @Tillsforthrills I really can't believe that people could come on a thread like this and decide to try and take away people's experiences.

Ahhh and now this.

Being called melodramatic for pointing out how you repeatedly tell someone who’s telling their story of racism that they basically should be grateful their skin is white and they could pretend to be European white.

You say all these things to people I’ve noticed and then feign surprise when they’re offended.

Please leave people alone that want to share on this thread.

Me too.

Most people that are white have conceded their experience isn’t comparable to black peoples especially in frequency. Yet that isn’t enough for some.

Such intolerance.

@Lalosalamanca There are lots of allies on this thread , people who speak up when needed, who negate the other nonsense. I’ve been pleasantly surprised and grateful for them.
Perhaps let that offset against any negativity you feel.
No one has been singled out by anyone but there are those who bizarrely insist on it. Its strange and unnecessary for the point of the discussion.

Take the good from it. Conversation is always a good thing 💐

This is laughable coming from you.

As a fellow mixed race person you are not my ally, you’re toxic and seeking to cause division. Then talk about ‘don’t take it personally’ and telling others to find the good.

Practice what you preach

Hilarious.
No, conversation is not always good.

To the people who have been affected by racism on the daily, I'm so sorry and I'm sorry for the people who feel the need to make everything about themselves when it isn't necessary or relevant. Your experiences matter and how you feel matter. Everyone should be treated equally and we should still fight for it regardless of the people who claim they don't understand what racism is or refuse to truly try to understand how it affects minority groups for the rest of their lives.
