What’s the worst racist incident you have experienced?

Hope54321 · 02/07/2022 14:01

I’ve had quite a few:

Students in secondary school have pulled my hijab off.

After the 9/11 a group of boys threw paper balls at me and shouted “Taliban” at me.

The day after a terror attack in London, a man pulled his window down and called me a dumb whore. There was no one else around.

Walking back from school, a man told me, “Go back to your own country”.

On my way to college, I got on the bus and a woman said, “I don’t know why you would want to draw attention to yourself by wearing that”.

my elderly late mother was racist amongst other things although she said she wasn’t. When I remarried later in life to a man from Asia , she said “ well at least you didn’t have any children with him” . She actually liked him “ considering”, but she regarded mixed race children “ even worse” than non mixed race “ foreign” children.
She was rude to all non white NHS when in hospital, except for the top consultant who was “ brilliant at his job- considering”
My children and grandchildren were very uncomfortable in her presence as they never knew what rubbish was going to come out of her mouth next.
Im saddened to hear of your experiences.

Name giggled at everyday.
husband told eastern European men only good for criminal activity or cleaning cars.
called ‘Pedro’ instead of own name
laughed at in section briefings
spoken to like I’m an idiot instead of as someone who speaks 3 languages.

Fluffygreenslippers · 02/07/2022 20:36

I have a ‘typical flat jewish head’.
I deserve to be hated because ‘the jews killed jesus’.
‘You don’t look Jewish, you don’t have horns.’

I'm white and in college my best friend was Nigerian with very dark skin.
We went for lunch in subway one day and my friend went to get us a table while I got our subs. The guy serving us also went to our college and was dressed like a skinhead with a Mohawk, plaid ankle length pants, suspenders and doc martins. I didn't know it was a skinhead look at the time and thought the suspenders made him look a bit dorky so I looked at him and then gave a little giggle without meeting to and he looked at me and then over at my friend and said "I fucking hate n***s".
I told him he was disgusting, got my friend and left.

I think some people could benefit from a quick Google of the term racism.

itsgettingweird · 02/07/2022 21:02

I'm so sorry to everyone of you that has experienced this level of racism.

It's totally unacceptable and embarrassing to know some of my fellow countrymen actually think like this let alone verbalise it.

NotMyDayJob · 02/07/2022 21:05

I'm white, so this wasn't something directed at me and something I observed and not really bad considering some of the awful stories on here. However, it feels relevant in our current political context, a more senior colleague who is now a Tory MP, referred to a client as 'the coloured lady' and expressed surprise that she was a successful business woman. This was within the last 10 years so not at a time when such language was acceptable

Like who?

onthefencesitter · 02/07/2022 21:08

not here but in a bookshop in Germany. 'Fuck off to where you come from, fucking chinese'

Refused admission to a pub in Amersham as we were a mixed race couple but they let all the white people come in at the same time.

My Jewish DH has had pebbles thrown at his window by the local kids when he was a kid and they told him to come out so they could beat him up. He also got thrown out of a Green party meeting for being Jewish (he still votes Green to this day though!)

xsquared · 02/07/2022 21:09

Being told to go back to my own country.

People stretching their eyes back to mimic slits.

Being called Chink which some do not think as serious as the N slur.

Whether through ignorance or not, I think Chinky as short for Chinese takeaway is outdated and inappropriate. I don't get why some people still insist on using it, and I've even seen it here on mn.

redskyatnight · 02/07/2022 21:11

Worst?

Probably when my brother had ice cream smashed into his face "to make him a bit whiter".
Being called a Paki; asked if I speak English or if I need a translator; being told that I smell of curry; told I should go home; and just generally being ignored or treated with suspicion are so normal that they are scarcely worth a mention.

onthefencesitter · 02/07/2022 21:11

During the pandemic, being told that i have covid because I am chinese by random people.

xsquared · 02/07/2022 21:13

Oh and being asked whether I've got Coronavirus by a teenager as well as another teenager deliberately, exaggerating running away from his group of friends as I passed them and then rejoining them.

Having "Fucking Chinese" muttered as I passed a grown man. Luckily, I told him not to be racist, and I don't think he expected me to stop and call him out given I'm very small and quiet looking and he was tall and bulky.

Knittingnanny2 · 02/07/2022 21:15

@Daydreamsinsantafe I’ve done as you suggested, not sure what you mean though. Do you think some of these incidents are not racist?

I was thinking the exact same thing….

Won’t even bother adding any of mine. Being a young black woman in London the list is practically endless

Not towards myself but very early memory of seeing my dad being spat at and family being called p*ki

my ex was Middle Eastern the racism towards him was off the scale in the early 90’s thankfully he was oblivious to a lot of it. He had grown up in France so was was used to it. Being asked if he was a terrorist or had terrorist links. He would reply how did you know please don’t say anything I’m peaceful now or words to that effect and then call them a dumb pig in Arabic whole shaking their hand pretending to be friends

I have been pointed out as being different but it isn’t the same it’s more interest than anything and being a mix seems more acceptable to some 🙄 it’s exotic 😠

ohfook · 02/07/2022 21:20

Summerwhereareyou · 02/07/2022 19:31

By friend with ginger hair has been subjected to absolutely hideous abuse , as we grew up and fhen as we started to go out as Teens and older.

She was /is very beautiful but it didn't stop all the name calligraphy and general abuse.

That's not racism though is it?

Daydreamsinsantafe · 02/07/2022 21:21

@pedropony76 ditto. Too many to traumatise myself with recalling. I’ll likely have a new one to deal with soon so I’ll save my energy.

If others aren’t able to identify what clearly doesn't meet the criteria for racism I don’t know what use I’ll be.

AquaticSewingMachine · 02/07/2022 21:22

Do not even fucking START with your "racist against white people" incident. Don't even.

@FrasierCraneDay

Due to ‘trouble caused’
‘Rightly or wrongly?’

Do you realise how racist your post is? Would you be ok being turned away from somewhere because of your ethnic group? Does everyone in any group behave the same? Of course not.
