It’s interesting, partygate gained legs because sections of the public took it personally and now Pincher has clearly galvanised personal feelings amongst MP’s and the civil service. So the lesson is that most people don’t really care unless it affects them personally. I think we all knew that anyway but that mirror being held up should make people in all sections uncomfortable.

I'd rather see him remain in power to the next election or call an election early with the hope of a coalition and then PR.

I get that but I don’t think we can risk it surely? I’m particularly interested in how this billion to the Ukraine has been allocated. I’m all for supporting them but I have no faith that this hasn’t been organised as a wallet stuffer for this lot.

It seems it want for the hair on his head.

*wasn’t

If there is pressure on Durham police to issue Sir Keir with a FPN as some people think , and he resigns, would that be so bad with Andy Burnham and David Miliband waiting in the wings, possibly? (Good article in New Statesman regarding David Miliband) and Andy could certainly give red wall Northern Con mp's a run for their money! I would hope Sir Keir would get a good role in a few months as I do still believe that he has a great deal to offer. As does Angela Rayner, like her or not , and she wasn't wrong with what she called the Tory sleaze MP's was she !

ApplesandBunions · 05/07/2022 13:41

Neither are MPs, although I suppose a convenient byelection in a very safe seat could be called.

Cornettoninja · 05/07/2022 14:07

Lol, I don’t think the DM have changed tack after all. The ‘Boris knew’ story is currently sitting as the 26th headline on their website. Grin

"Another backbencher who is not one of the usual critics tells me they’ve never seen the atmosphere so bad in the parliamentary party. Several members of government have even put in a letter according to this MP, tho as ever only Sir Graham Brady knows who’s bluffing and who isn’t"

1922 elections next week. Johnson will be promising jobs etc. I think the atmosphere will go further downhill (must be pretty much underground by now). The only reason Cabinet Ministers aren't resigning in droves is because Johnson is their meal ticket.
What a mess.

The Daily Mail are probably hunting through Harry and Meghan's bins for a helpful distraction as I type.

Exactly! The Labour party are strong, there are those waiting in the wings should they ever be needed.

What have the Tories got... who is waiting in the wings? Liz Truss? Sunak.... no, won't happen. Gove... no, too many skeletons. There is no one. Let BJ hang on in there for now because they are eating themselves from the inside out.

As far as the hairdresser story. IF this is true it's awful and would should see him off. Made someone pregnant whilst with Carrie, sent her back to Canada for an abortion
(Disclaimer... no idea on the veracity of this)

Does it even need to be a safe seat?

jgw1 · 05/07/2022 14:24

I understand that Boris has so many things to do each day that he forgot that he was told that one of his Ministers was guilty of inappropriate conduct.

I suppose if one forgets how many children one has, and whether one is at ones own birthday party it is possible.

tobee · 05/07/2022 14:25

Desperate desperate stuff

Hehe, anything under a 10k Tory majority might be worth a go.

I'd probably go for one of the ones where the Labour MP is anointed rather than elected, but that does raise the delicious possibility of Burnham taking back one of the precarious majority Tory seats in GM. Not Wragg or Brady, they have their uses, but perhaps somewhere in the northern half of GM.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2022 14:30

I suppose Tamworth might be pushing it...Grin

Roussette · 05/07/2022 14:31

From Paul Brand

NEW: Understand Tory rebels are coordinating fresh letters calling for a second vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister. Without a rule change one is not technically possible until next year, but I understand several letters have gone in today alone. 1/2

Elections due to take place for 1922 executive next week. If rebels succeed in electing sympathetic candidates they hope for a fast change of the rules and potentially even a second vote of confidence before summer recess. Whether this is realistic or not remains to be seen. 2/2

Another backbencher who is not one of the usual critics tells me they’ve never seen the atmosphere so bad in the parliamentary party. Several members of government have even put in a letter according to this MP, tho as ever only Sir Graham Brady knows who’s bluffing and who isn’t

The MP then added: “I’ve been talking to Boris supporters - backbenchers and ministers - who have been supporting him. They have had enough. They won’t be doing that any more. It is when not if it all ends for the PM. But I don’t know how that will happen.”

Boris is working hard as he did in North Shropshire to ensure Tamworth is not Tory when the by-election comes.

Roussette · 05/07/2022 14:33

It is when not if it all ends for the PM

Trouble is... we've heard this time and time and time again

The Telegraph were tipped off early last time. Let's see if they are again.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2022 14:41

Sorry - that should be let's see if they have been again!

Roussette · 05/07/2022 14:43

Gosh... Tory MP Roger Gale absolutely furious about all this. At least some are prepared to stand up against lying and duplicity.

How the line has changed since Thursday

Thursday night- PM considers matter closed
Friday- No 10 spokesman says he thinks PM was unaware of previous allegations
Then corrected to "specific" allegations
Tuesday-PM "forgot" briefing about specific allegations

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2022 14:47

Ukraine got some more money, phone call with Zelenskyy after cabinet meeting and before (delayed) press briefing.

Zelenskyy must be smiling every time he hears 'Johnson is in trouble'

What did they all expect?

Not just after the confidence vote. I mean after he was elected leader of the party in the first place. They just looked at the win election optics but and then ignored the rest. The months in power afterwards. Typical Tory behaviour.

They were warned. We were all warned.
