How the line has changed since Thursday

Thursday night- PM considers matter closed
Friday- No 10 spokesman says he thinks PM was unaware of previous allegations
Then corrected to "specific" allegations
Tuesday-PM "forgot" briefing about specific allegations

I find it unbelievably patronising to have the PM say he considers the matter closed. We had that all through partygate and I don't consider that matter closed yet.

What did they all expect?

Not just after the confidence vote. I mean after he was elected leader of the party in the first place. They just looked at the win election optics but and then ignored the rest. The months in power afterwards. Typical Tory behaviour.

They were warned. We were all warned.

They just crossed their fingers and hoped nobody asked any questions

Newsnight's @nicholaswatt has been speaking to departing ministers outside Cabinet today - keep an eye on the Newsnight twitter feed, we'll tweet out his exchanges..

When I hear him say he considers a matter closed now, I have a little giggle to myself in anticipation of whatever shitshow is about to come along. It seems to be like a signal of upcoming shenanigans, at this point.

Oh fuck Mail going full-on Kate stuff again as deflection. Starting to feel physically sick and that was followed by Sir Cliff's Wimbledon singalong. That said Johnson will never again be able to walk amongst his people without feeling their righteous anger. Clav's disappeared as well.... cometh the hour cometh not the arch MN apologist.

Cheguevarahamster · 05/07/2022 15:36

Dan Hodges just tweeted "Current rebel plan. 1922 slate run on pledge to change rules. Letters sent to Brady concurrently. New 1922 appointed next Wednesday at 4.00. Meet immediately and vote on rule change. As soon as rule change agreed, new contest triggered automatically (because letters already in)."👀👀

"In other news (!) I understand Durham Police met with the Crown Prosecution Service earlier this afternoon to discuss whether Keir Starmer will be fined over beergate 👀"

Update on today's beergate meeting: Durham Police say there was an internal meeting today to discuss the investigation and the next steps but the CPS was NOT involved. As others have pointed out that would be interesting as FPNs are issued by police - have deleted earlier tweet.

Hhhmmm someone is feeding false info.

Apologies for linking to Tony Divers earlier tweet. Seems like it was just nonsense.

It is when not if it all ends for the PM

Trouble is... we've heard this time and time and time again

The biggest difference I can see between this and partygate is partygate was a middle finger to the public, this is a middle finger to MP’s themselves.

BJ and co don’t care that they’ve sent out ministers to publicly support them and repeat, what is now known to be beyond doubt, lies.

I thought to myself yesterday that BJ must be running low on sweeteners to offer and now it’s increasingly clear that he doesn’t have any scruples in screwing them over anything promised previously looks like a debt less likely to be settled.

Cornettoninja · 05/07/2022 15:48

There’s a lot of it about @Notonthestairs. Tory HQ are getting pretty desperate and are scraping the barrel for diversions. Understandable, they’ve had a rough year.

Russians probably aren’t as reliable as they used to be either.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2022 15:49

I guess the Mail and other Johnson supporters think he only has to hang on 2 more weeks and then it will be recess and magically the slate will be wiped clean.

itsgettingweird · 05/07/2022 15:50

They just crossed their fingers and hoped nobody asked any questions

I actually think many of this lot have been through life as the elite and didn't ever think anyone would dare question them.

But being PM is not the same as loud mouth of the Eton common room.

Notonthestairs · 05/07/2022 15:51

"Russians probably aren’t as reliable as they used to be either."

Exactly. Less cash (possibly?) and maybe less "tech support" (bots).

Roussette · 05/07/2022 15:52

We are not forgetting. The sleaze won't disappear over the recess. BJ will hope so, but no. And two weeks is a long time in politics

I think so. Hence the ridiculous attempt from Johnson and co to shield Owen Paterson from what was really a very minor sanction. It wasn't in any way worth the risk. That course of action doesn't make any sense at all if you apply logic, but of course that isn't what they were doing.

tobee · 05/07/2022 16:31

The recess will just be more time for stuff to accumulate and come out. Bet Johnson is pissed off there's no World Cup this summer to distract the masses. There's the Women's Euros. But as we know that doesn't have the same traction.

Hearing Boris Johnson loyalist Simon Clarke was due to be doing the broadcast round tomorrow morning, but has pulled out

Things do seem to have got significantly worse today. Creeping ever closer!

Roussette · 05/07/2022 16:43

Yep. No jubilee, that high was short lived, no Euros or World Cup.
Just possible train strikes, a huge dread for everyone on fuel prices and knowing what winter heating bills are going to be like, let alone supermarket prices which to me have got so much worse this last week or two.

Sources reveal there is to be a PM pool interview (not with us, we found out not via official channels) but not officially confirmed.

Anyway, just in case that helps Newsdesks plan

Tory MP almost begging colleagues.

Anthony Mangnall MP
@AnthonyMangnal1
It is time for cabinet colleagues to recognise the appalling damage that the Prime Minister is doing to the party, government and country.
It isn’t good enough and each day that passes those who sit in cabinet will be more complicit with this farcical situation.

I might not have voted for him, I might not want a Tory MP but as I have one I'm quite relieved it is Mangnal. It could have been worse.
