Over optimistic things you have purchased

I will start.

Just went rifling through the kitchen drawers looking for chopsticks and came across a tub of baking beans. I have had them for a few years and used them once. Definitely an over optimistic buying decision about both my baking abilities and inclination when I bought those!

Anyone else bought something full of optimism and good intentions only for it to languish, forgotten, in a dusty corner?!

Ooooh I use baking beans all the time.

I have, however, just responded on a thread about a spiralizer. Far too much faff to bother using.

LovelyHelpfulStaffMember · 25/05/2022 13:20

A special fluted baking tray to fit two recently made and about to be baked baguettes, side by side 😂. It even has ventilation for crispness. Used once.

kimfox · 25/05/2022 13:50

I know - I should use baking beans and do lots of delicious pastry.. but I just...don't. Must stop myself if I'm ever tempted by a spiraliser or indeed a special air hole filled crispy tray for baguettes! 😂

I also have a pasta machine - totally useless used once for novelty and because I'd been watching too much masterchef. I later discovered I could have bought a special pasta attachment for my kitchen-aid! (Which I also wouldn't use).

You've just reminded me @kimfox of the pasta machine, and reasonably expensive food processor I bought soon after DS was born. I think I felt that I would develop into some sort of domestic goddess. Both been used precisely once!

Dogmum40 · 25/05/2022 13:59

The kitchen aid! Everyone on here seems to love it but I prefer my hand whisk! I bought it because of all the raving on here but I don’t think it mixes very well I have to keep getting the spatula out to move the mixture from the sides to the middle ( so sorry everyone that loves theirs 😆)

StarTwins · 25/05/2022 14:01

A yoga mat
A thing that converts tapes to digital, so I could convert all my cassettes
A thing for making my feet all smooth and nice
A hair straightener thing
A mat thing for doing jigsaws in for all the jigsaws I was going to do

None of these have ever been used.

Natural light alarm clock.

Clothes steamer.

I get over-excited in the middle of Lidl.

disneydreaming · 25/05/2022 14:15

My gym membership Grin

EufyProsser · 25/05/2022 14:17

An Elvie pelvic floor trainer. Just because there's an app 'game' to play doesn't make pelvic floor exercises fun. Or provide you with a quiet uninterrupted time to do them.

PailOfOdo · 25/05/2022 14:25

Size 8 jeans.
Nah.
The man at the till very diplomatically made a point of highlighting their returns policy when I bought them.

kimfox · 25/05/2022 14:28

These are hilarious! I'm so happy I'm not alone in my impulsive and useless purchases! (UseFUL in the right hands of course HmmGrin)

My gym membership Grin

😂

If it makes you feel better I used mine for the first time since March 2020 yesterday - been paying for it this whole time. I went to Zumba, (so hardcore!) which I did enjoy, but so far that's a crazily expensive 45 minutes.

Ghd hair straighteners... my hair is quite straight with a quick blow dry
Used it once

steppemum · 25/05/2022 15:11

size 16 jeans.
To be fair they NEARLY fit, just a bit too tight. I will get into them one day.

One Christmas my parents made a deal.
My mum promised that she WOULDN'T buy my dad a long handled spade, as long as he promised NOT to buy her a pasta machine.
😂

APJ1 · 25/05/2022 18:11

A treadmill. I've used it a grand total of two times!
A Nutrbullet and soup maker, both now hibnerating for years in the cupboard.

SamanthaVimes · 25/05/2022 18:16

Reusable nappies. I had good intentions of saving the planet one poo at a time but between DH not wanting to use them and hardly any trousers being big enough to go over then they didn’t last long!

PestoPasghetti · 25/05/2022 18:18

100 years ago when I was a teenager I bought a stack of depilatory cream that was supposed to eventually halt regrowth. It was one of those 'The more you buy the more you save' type deals so I spent an insane amount of 6 huge tubes. It smelt exactly like dog poo, and all went in the bin after the first use.

PestoPasghetti · 25/05/2022 18:19

More recently I spent a month's wages (not exaggerating!!) on a fitness trampoline. In fairness it is fantastic quality and I intend to use it, just don't have the time or energy!

noodlezoodle · 25/05/2022 18:45

Yep, another pasta maker and jigsaw mat here. Have used the pasta maker once and the jigsaw mat never.

I was going to say the breadmaker but actually it did get very well used for a while. We only stopped because the bread was so bloody delicious and we were eating far too much of it.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2022 18:49

A skipping rope about 18 months ago. I watched an instagram account where this woman had mastered jump rope over lockdown and is now fantastic at it. DH watched me open the parcel and actually suggested it went straight in the charity donation bag there and then.
I hung it in the garage ready for when I start. It's still hung up in the garage.

SwelegantParty · 25/05/2022 18:52

A LOT of cleaning stuff from Lakeland, I was seduced by the catalogue. Bastards didn't mention that you had to use it to make your house clean.

HellyR · 25/05/2022 18:54

I've got a kitchen blowtorch I've never used for all those creme brulees and torched meringues. Tbf it's because I never got around to getting whatever it is you need to put in it to make fire come out.

emmylousings · 25/05/2022 18:59

Contact lenses, CBA with them. Microwave slow cooker, never used.
You lot should either Ebay or charity shop your white elephants!

ShirleyJackson · 25/05/2022 19:00

I’ve lost count of how many foreign language courses I’ve bought on CD ‘to listen to in the car’.

The charity shops groan when they see me coming. In French, Italian and Spanish.

DogsAndGin · 25/05/2022 19:05

Material to match my curtains, and a Roman blind kit. I had every intention of making the blind… but it hasn’t happened and I doubt it ever will! 😩
