Over optimistic things you have purchased

I will start.

Just went rifling through the kitchen drawers looking for chopsticks and came across a tub of baking beans. I have had them for a few years and used them once. Definitely an over optimistic buying decision about both my baking abilities and inclination when I bought those!

Anyone else bought something full of optimism and good intentions only for it to languish, forgotten, in a dusty corner?!

OP posts:

Loads of things including a jar of baking beans, which has been used one fewer times than the OP's baking beans.

A "teach yourself South American Spanish" CDs+book set, purchased nearly 20 years ago when I was living in the back end of nowhere and a bit down about not having any hobbies/friends/boyfriend/proper career/ house. I never got beyond the first page of the book and the CDs were still in the wrapper when I gave them to a friend who was going to South America for 6 months, or I would probably still be getting them out of the drawer during my occasional sporadic efforts at a clearout, looking at them sadly and putting them back on the drawer, just in case.

Culinary blowtorch

thefirstmrsrochester · 25/05/2022 19:22

Cast iron paella pan on a tripod stand, bought at a camping show over 15 years ago. Never camped prior to purchase, nor after. And don’t particularly like paella. My neighbour who camps and loves paella was delighted to have it when I was clearing out the garage and remembered that I even had it.

Also culinary blowtorch.

ChristineCagney11 · 25/05/2022 19:22

Years and years ago bought a so called "million candle torch"
20hrs to charge it (not exaggerating)
Worked for maximum 20 mins at a time leaving me in the pitch black with my dogs in the winter running across the fields to beat the dying of the light.
To be fair it was really really bright though for the few minutes it worked..sorry planet.

DCINightingale · 25/05/2022 19:29

I once went down a youtube rabbit hole and decided I would become an excellent saxophone player. Thank god I decided to only hire one. It was promptly returned after 3 months, I think I played it about 2 times. DH has very kindly not taken the piss.

rookiemere · 25/05/2022 19:40

I have never used baking beans too - bought about twenty years ago Blush.
Another wildly optimistic purchase was the hand mincer (John Lewis - £50) bought about 8 years ago when we thought we'd make our own burgers. Again - never used.

Not one but TWO of these:

BoxLegend Folding Board, V-3 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019KGCT9E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_84SDQ1F78XGCA9HYKJW1

MiniDinosaur · 25/05/2022 19:46

Gym membership and an italian language CD, both years ago, I am older and wiser now!

GoodVibesHere · 25/05/2022 19:47

A bike (plus helmet, basket, tyre pump, lights)

An electric chocolate-melting pot for baking

A picnic set

A sewing machine

Jigsaw puzzle mat

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 25/05/2022 19:47

A banjo- tried for 3 years. I could play Country Road and Blowin in the Wind fairly mediocrely and Take it Easy really badly. That was about it. Sold it because of dodgy shoulder and when reality set in. I'd never be able to play it how I wanted to hear it. Sold it to some other optimistic sod. My husband was delighted.

Mamette · 25/05/2022 19:47

Christ, where do I start.

Kitchen aid hand mixer
Window washing thing
Several steam mops
Going out clothes
Flights to holiday destinations
Liquid eyeliner

DontKeepTheFaith · 25/05/2022 19:49

So many things….

A sewing machine
Kitchenaid
Electric bike (still drive to work)
Breadmaker
Bookshelves full of cook books

MadeInChorley · 25/05/2022 19:52

Beeswax pellets and wicks for making candles. I had a few interesting jars and pottery containers that I thought I could re-use and turn into candles that were pretty and useful and send to people I missed and couldn’t see because it was the height of lockdown. I had the best of intentions of involving the kids and making gifts.

still sitting in the cupboard.

MadeInChorley · 25/05/2022 19:54

Also a culinary blowtorch. On my wedding list 17 years ago and never used.

Ilikewinter · 25/05/2022 20:00

😂 OMG I would have definitely come to your "set"

TheWeeDonkey · 25/05/2022 20:01

This thread is like the Generation Game! 😂I will add;

A sewing machine, I was going to start making all my own clothes and be quirky and funky. 2 years later I'm still excusively shopping at Matalan and Ebay.
A hoola hoop, yeah, no
A kettle bell, makes a great doorstop
Gym membership, I stopped going when lockdown hit and haven't been back since.
Bathroom floor tiles, lets not go there.
Yarn, so much yarn....

WakeUpandSmelltheKetchup · 25/05/2022 20:05

Fancy bike with wicker basket on the front. I had ideas of cycling with a hat with ribbons flying behind me, not being a sweaty mess in a nylon neon-pink jacket making dogs bark as I puffed past them.

Slush puppy maker. Because the shop ones never ever worked and obviously I would use it to make cocktails and kids drinks and desserts. It languishes in a cupboard, dusty and used once.

Overlocking sewing machine. I don’t even know what this does nevermind why I bought it.

I have to actively avoid the centre aisles at Lidl because I am weak and I do not need a pump action waffle maker.

nomistake · 25/05/2022 20:06

Once I bought a babyliss big hair after reading about it on here. After I used it once I went to put it in a drawer and found another babyiss big hair. I'd forgotten I'd asked for one for xmas a few years before, used once and into the drawer.

Also, I got a juicer. Then realised just how much fruit and veg you need to make one glass of juice and gave up my juice diet.

SpeedofaSloth · 25/05/2022 20:06

Exercise bike.

JennyForeigner · 25/05/2022 20:18

Treated myself to a fancy food processor to help in catering my wedding. Didn't use it.

Just celebrated our six year anniversary. Still haven't used it.

SunnyLobelia · 25/05/2022 20:19

Pure silk ballgown in size 12.

No-one wants to buy the fucking thing on ebay either.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 25/05/2022 20:20

I got rid of my ( never used) baking beans when I realised that I only make "no roll" pastry that just gets pressed into the tin.

Also long gone are an alto recorder and an ocarina, bought in adulthood when trying to make up for not being allowed music lessons as a kid.

However I have just looked in the Cupboard of Doom and see that I still own a neglected Lakeland meat mincer ( I don't eat meat) and a waffle maker. I am not ready to give up on all my aspirations yet.

DinosaursEatMan · 25/05/2022 20:22

Gym membership, used once
Breadmaker, not used since lockdown
Sewing machine, never used and now donated to my mum
’Learn to Crochet’ book, needles and yarn. Not a chance.

I fancy a drum kit next but am trying to resist

BearSoFair · 25/05/2022 20:32

Crochet kit. Bought at the start of the year, I learned how to make squares, couldn't get the hang of circles, and now it all sits in a sad little bag beside the sofa!
