Over optimistic things you have purchased

I will start.

Just went rifling through the kitchen drawers looking for chopsticks and came across a tub of baking beans. I have had them for a few years and used them once. Definitely an over optimistic buying decision about both my baking abilities and inclination when I bought those!

Anyone else bought something full of optimism and good intentions only for it to languish, forgotten, in a dusty corner?!

My mother is the Queen of this. She has thing in her attic from a hobby she’s not done for 30 years but won’t get rid of because she might want to do it again some day.
She FINALLY got rid of the treadmill which had gathered dust for probably a decade or more and then still ordered herself a weighted hula hoop because she was going to get fit. She’s in her 70s and as far as I’m aware, said hula hoop has lived behind a door for about a year and not been used - she never learns!

Lol there are a few things on here I would consider buying !
I am a sod for buying note books for eork or home using a few pages , forgetting where I have put them or gone to work without them so bought more .

@DeanStockwelllsBunny Always loved notebooks especially the "police" ones that flip over with the band around it

Clevs · 25/05/2022 21:21

A sushi maker. Used it once.

Basilbrushgotfat · 25/05/2022 21:22

Oh god, soooo much. Amazon + ADD have a LOT to answer for!

MargaretThursday · 25/05/2022 21:25

Fabric and fabric and fabric... I have one of those Ikea units with the fabric boxes. 3x 4 boxes. That probably takes about half my fabric... nah, perhaps a 1/3.

If I ever want to make something I always end up buying more because I haven't got exactly right. Hmm

I would also like to hear this set. Any chance of Me and Bobby McGee for an encore?

Well now I want a banjo !

Chickydoo · 25/05/2022 21:33

Online courses (why do I do this,I haven't got the time)!
Face/hand/eye masks (see above..no time)
Bread maker
Ice cream maker
Soda stream
Waffle maker
Juicer
My list could go on...

Fridafever · 25/05/2022 21:34

I have basically most of the things in this thread 😂

Chewbecca · 25/05/2022 21:37

This is definitely a sales thread, right? We have our very own MN eBay starting right here, only difference being that you put the item back up for sale after 3 months once you realise that you, too will not use the item.

I'd currently like to buy an unused sewing machine. I can assure you I will put it up for sale again, still unused at some point in 2023 for someone else to dream about for a while.

waterrat · 25/05/2022 21:38

Hula hoop. Pasta maker. Fitbit

Chewbecca · 25/05/2022 21:39

KitchenAid accessories are really expensive! At least I only own an unused pasta machine, not a /n unused KitchenAid pasta machine!

WhyPaulMemory · 25/05/2022 21:46

A Bosu ball - used twice

heated rollers - not used at all

ukelele - gathering dust

wobble stool - has the hardest seat in existence, makes my bum go numb

steam cleaner - far too much faff

dog weighing scales - dog refuses to sit on them and is still a fat bastard

slendertone shorts - managed to eBay these as they were pristine, wonder if the buyer used them!

And many more good intentions/purchases paving the way to hell…

Honaloulou · 25/05/2022 21:47

Rollerskates.

Used perhaps twice a year for the last five years, so they do at least have longevity.

I still look a wally on them, though.

Iheartmysmart · 25/05/2022 21:48

When I split up with my exDH a few years ago and got my own flat I bought all sorts of random stuff which has never been used. A lovely china tea set for one, a white embroidered bed set, lots of scented candles, all things I thought I’d use in my ‘new’ life. The reality is I’m up with the dog at the crack of dawn so no leisurely sipping of tea first thing, said dog trashed the white duvet set and the candles set the smoke alarm off.

I decided to learn crochet. Bought a book, crochet hooks, watched YouTube tuition videos.
Still can't get past the first loop 🤣

Me too. I can knit but just couldn’t get my head around crochet.

I also have a bread maker, used intensely for about a month, then shoved in a cupboard never to re-emerge. It’s actually less faff to make bread without.
I have a deep fat fryer, again used intensely for a couple of weeks then left gathering dust because of the scary amount of oil needed. Plus all the falafels and other fried bits I froze all came out soggy. Not sure what went wrong there!
Final thing is a yogurt maker, to be fair it was a gift, I think I got several months of use out of it but my family got so sick of yogurt they stopped eating it for years. Now consigned to the cupboard next to the bread maker.
A vi

other optimistic purchases were items of clothing in the size I used to be 10 years ago. I’m still convinced I’ll get into them but my shape has changed, between middle age and weight training.

BellePeppa · 25/05/2022 21:55

A raclette. I was going to use it loads of times to have more ‘interactive’ dinners with the kids but it got used once and then I just couldn’t be bothered with it.

Melassa · 25/05/2022 21:55

I also bought a violin, used to play a lot at secondary so thought I could pick it up again easily even after 35 years. I was so crap it was frustrating, plus my cats hated it. It’s at the top of my wardrobe gathering dust.

DeanStockwelllsBunny · 25/05/2022 21:56

@ChristineCagney11 , it wouldn't be so bad if I bought that type but the last three I bought ( in about a month ) were moleskin 😳

MugginsOverEre · 25/05/2022 21:57

My exercise bike.

Now clothes holder for the bedroom.

The3rdWatermelon · 25/05/2022 22:00

A set of resistance band things for exercise.

Even worse, I mis-clicked and accidentally ordered two sets of the bloody things. I couldn’t be arsed to walk to the post office to return the extra set so what I thought I was going to do with resistance bands I have no idea.

I did use one band, once, to tie my husband’s bike to the cupboard door handle to stop it falling over in the hallway!

ChocolateRiver · 25/05/2022 22:05

Yep, an exercise bike. It all started so well but went down hill rapidly. Now it’s an expensive clothes horse.

cocktailclub · 25/05/2022 22:07

Size 10 jeans

ThomasinaGallico · 25/05/2022 22:12

3luckystars · 25/05/2022 20:58

I buy fabric and beautiful patterns and never get around to sewing them. I’m still optimistic that I will have the time someday.

The trouble with fabric is, it seems such a shame to cut into it. 😂 And that’s before you go through the hassle of setting up and threading the sewing machine. Cutting the pattern to fit yourself rather than some invented pattern size isn’t easy either.

ThomasinaGallico · 25/05/2022 22:12

My problem is that when I do make my own clothes I end up hating them.

TheDogsMother · 25/05/2022 22:13

Dog coats, NuFace Facial Toner, picnic basket, pestle and mortar, weighted hula hoop, Vax steam cleaner and I'm sure there's more. The bread maker gets used a lot though.
