Over optimistic things you have purchased

I will start.

Just went rifling through the kitchen drawers looking for chopsticks and came across a tub of baking beans. I have had them for a few years and used them once. Definitely an over optimistic buying decision about both my baking abilities and inclination when I bought those!

Anyone else bought something full of optimism and good intentions only for it to languish, forgotten, in a dusty corner?!

A Swiss roll flat tin. Never even bought the ingredients

ExMex · 25/05/2022 20:39

Mini sewing machine

OverByYer · 25/05/2022 20:40

Summer clothes

stillherenow · 25/05/2022 20:40

Oh and an expensive tent - for a festival that got cancelled because of you know what. Meantime I've got old and there's not a chance I'm camping .

Still in the case - think I can sell it for what i paid as prices have rocketed - but have to find the energy to list it !

stillherenow · 25/05/2022 20:41

I use my bread maker about three times a week though, that's one of my best ever purchases

Nidan2Sandan · 25/05/2022 20:45

My MIL bought us an ice cream maker and pie maker. Used a few times initially and been hiding in the back of a cupboard since.

Deep fat fryer. DH wanted to make his own KFC style chicken. Food is okay but everything in a 20ft radius gets covered in a film of grease from the steam it produces.

Pure silk ballgown in size 12.

No-one wants to buy the fucking thing on ebay either.

I want to see it!

HazelBite · 25/05/2022 20:50

A breadmaker, an electric potato peeler, a spiraliser, very fancy (complicated) coffee maker, a thing for making cake pops

Crochet kit. Bought at the start of the year, I learned how to make squares, couldn't get the hang of circles, and now it all sits in a sad little bag beside the sofa!

I decided to learn crochet. Bought a book, crochet hooks, watched YouTube tuition videos.
Still can't get past the first loop 🤣

thecurtainsofdestiny · 25/05/2022 20:58

Oh that's the next think I wanted to learn- crochet!

It won't end well will it?

3luckystars · 25/05/2022 20:58

I buy fabric and beautiful patterns and never get around to sewing them. I’m still optimistic that I will have the time someday.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 25/05/2022 20:58

*thing

Anon564354 · 25/05/2022 21:00

Wool, knitting needles. I cannot knit. I don’t know why I bothered.

A sewing kit. I actively avoid sewing, my mum mends my clothes if they need it.

A burger press. Never used it.

A cat tower. He side eyes it and uses my curtains to climb instead. That one was hopelessly optimistic.

Running trousers/trainers. The running trainers have been demoted to work trainers because I was never ever going to run in them.

Didn’t cost money but the couch to 5k app was another stupid idea of mine.

I don’t like to go to aldi/Lidl anymore because I can’t cope with the things I buy. I too am weak.

DH groans every time I suggest a new hobby 😂. I really need to have a clear out.

Anon564354 · 25/05/2022 21:01

Oh and also a deep fat fryer for all the homemade donuts I was going to make.

I’ve lived in this house for 4 years and I still have a box labelled “kitchen” that is sealed and in the loft. Probably full of other purchases I never used 😬

Haven't worn a dress since I was about 8, but my first thought was "Hmm wonder what colour it is?"

Crochet is definitely worth sticking with. Can be tricky at first but YouTube and patience are the way forward.

I taught myself to crochet using a kids book and YouTube years ago and it’s my Favorite pastime now.

It is a slippery slope of unnecessary purchases though. I have 2 cases full of fancy wooden crochet hooks which are glorious and I adore them but not cheap and you can only use one hook at a time! I also have box upon box of yarn that I don’t believe I will ever be able to get through in this life even if I stopped working and took up crochet full time🤣

Phlewf · 25/05/2022 21:05

I have all these things, I did persevere with embroidery for a year, but haven’t worked out what to do with all the shit I make. So out of fashion for art I feel guilty giving them as presents.

worst of all though, DH decided he’d make candles in lock down. Ordered loads of stuff, made the candles, gave them as Christmas presents. Then people gave him their abandoned kits and he made them and started requesting empty interesting jars. It’s like bloody Yankee candles in here. Infuriating that his first foray into crafting was a success.

oh I also decided to get into pottery, made one broach and have enough clay left to build a house.

😂 OMG I would have definitely come to your "set"

I would also like to hear this set. Any chance of Me and Bobby McGee for an encore?

Albgo · 25/05/2022 21:06

@ChristineCagney11 I'm picturing a dusky pink 🤷‍♀️

DeanStockwelllsBunny · 25/05/2022 21:07

Lol there are a few things on here I would consider buying !
I am a sod for buying note books for eork or home using a few pages , forgetting where I have put them or gone to work without them so bought more .

Reusable nappies. I had good intentions of saving the planet one poo at a time but between DH not wanting to use them and hardly any trousers being big enough to go over then they didn’t last long!

Same!! I have a very chunky baby, clothes were a nightmare. Also, felt a massive faff for nursery (not sure if they would have even accepted them). I think it would have been easier just to use for the newborn phase

@Albgo Oh..for some reason I was picturing darkish green with a shimmer ?
We need to see @SunnyLobelia
😂

Qwill · 25/05/2022 21:16

A very expensive guitar. I play it less than I did when I had a cheap one. But, those were the days when we were child free and drank wine, and sat around playing piano, guitar, and singing. Hopefully one day I will have some time to play again - but I’m sure something else will get in the way!

Athenajm80 · 25/05/2022 21:18

Various different crafting sets in the hope that one day I will find my talent. Never going to happen.

A sewing machine and material. As above.

A punch bag in the hope of learning to box, letting out bad emotions, and finding a sport I enjoy.

A jigsaw mat and some jigsaws including the map of Ankh Morpork (Discworld) which is ridiculously hard. I like jigsaws but it turns out the cats do too!

Far too many "organise yourself/house/finances" type books. I'm still broke, living in an untidy house and too fat! Also lots of language learning things. Paraphrasing a PP, I didn't realise I had to read them to learn!

DeanStockwelllsBunny · 25/05/2022 21:18

@Phlewf , as a kid I use to make candles , I loved it and often want to restart it now but I just don't have the space .
