Over optimistic things you have purchased

I will start.

Just went rifling through the kitchen drawers looking for chopsticks and came across a tub of baking beans. I have had them for a few years and used them once. Definitely an over optimistic buying decision about both my baking abilities and inclination when I bought those!

Anyone else bought something full of optimism and good intentions only for it to languish, forgotten, in a dusty corner?!

I've bought the following at different times -
a potato ricer - what a faff.
omelette maker - a frying pan is perfectly adequate.
sandwich maker
jewellery-making kit (unopened)
hula hoop (never used) - I much prefer Hula Hoop snacks
pasta machine thing (never used)

The kitchen aid! Everyone on here seems to love it but I prefer my hand whisk! I bought it because of all the raving on here but I don’t think it mixes very well I have to keep getting the spatula out to move the mixture from the sides to the middle ( so sorry everyone that loves theirs 😆)

Me, too. I bought a KitchenAid when my old food processor broke. Worst purchase ever. I used to throw all the ingredients for a sponge cake in the processor, dump it into 2 tins, slide the tins into the oven and out would come light as air sponge cakes that everyone raved about. I've tried everything to make equally good sponges with my Kitchen Aid but no luck. It looks gorgeous but it hates me....

They’re shite aren’t they! I got fed up of staring at the bloody thing and made room for it in a cupboard and it’s been gathering dust there ever since 🙈

SlowHorses · 26/05/2022 22:53

Fire starter flint set thing. Was watching a lot of Ed Stafford and got carried away 😂

LBOCS2 · 26/05/2022 23:11

Yep. I have a KitchenAid and the only thing it's really great for is Italian Meringue. I'm prefer an (electric) hand whisk for most other things.

Flimflamberdwidget · 26/05/2022 23:24

Chocolate thermometer, never used - bloody bake off's fault.

windmillandcoffee · 26/05/2022 23:25

A sledge. Didn't even get a frozen puddle that year!

Knittingnanny2 · 26/05/2022 23:40

I bet there are loads of middle of aisle in Lidl/Aldi stuff in cupboards all over the country
Ive sewn on and off all of my life and always wanted an overlocker. My husband queued outside of Lidl’s to get me one a few years ago. I’ve actually cried trying to thread it up and cried even more when it comes unthreaded.
it’s in a cupboard. I lie when my husband asks me if I’ve used it when I’m working on a sewing project
its working out about £40 a use at the moment....

Knittingnanny2 · 26/05/2022 23:41

@windmillandcoffee we have three plastic sledges in the attic, we are in our sixties, live in the warm south of England and I think they have had one snowy outing in 15 years!

I use my pasta roller loads (3 ish times in quick succession) a very long time ago.

So I enthusiastically bought a pasta extruding attachment for me to make my own spaghetti, fusilli, penne and the like. Bronze dies: the good one. And a ravoili tray, and roller, and a stamp. Then years later lockdown came and all the shortages, and it was going to be my carby salvation!

Box fresh, still. Never used.

I bought a much more expensive digital piano, then stopped having lessons, and haven't touched it since.

autienotnaughty · 27/05/2022 04:32

Shark vacuum cleaner. It's so bad I tend to use a B&M sweeping brush instead!

Yup...I find them rubbish at mixing! Mine is at the back of an infrequently used cupboard whilst the cheap as chips electric hand whisk I've had for 20 years sees regular use.

Howling at aspirational lettuce.

DP has just told me that a tortilla press is on the way, so I might as well just add that to the list now.

That’s just reminded me I bought a set of Asian dumpling presses about 5 years ago and they’re still sitting in a drawer unopened.

@AffIt
Unfortunately the only effect of your post is that I'm now going to Amazon to look up "Potato ricer"

I use my potato ricer a lot. It does get messy and I haven’t mastered the art of using it without getting potato everywhere but it does eliminate lumps🙂

Maybe we should have some kind of swap-shop - I too have seen things on this thread and thought - ooh, yes that sounds like something I would definitely need! Lol.

This thread is like the Generation Game! 😂I will add;

A sewing machine, I was going to start making all my own clothes and be quirky and funky. 2 years later I'm still excusively shopping at Matalan and Ebay.
A hoola hoop, yeah, no
A kettle bell, makes a great doorstop
Gym membership, I stopped going when lockdown hit and haven't been back since.
Bathroom floor tiles, lets not go there.
Yarn, so much yarn....

Christ, are you me?
Also hoola hoop and kettle bell, and tiles!
