Before his picture was published I knew he was white due to the lack of his colour being mentioned in the press. Every crime committed by a non white person has their ethnicity mentioned in the headline.

I don't know that he is white. He has a Hispanic name and lived in a Hispanic majority area.

Exactly. He's not white, but he's not African American either. No point in making this a race issue.

@ChristineCagney11

If you mean meds prescribed for ADHD, like Methylphenidate, DS1 takes it daily and it’s improved his life immeasurably. Someone taking a gun into an elementary school is not taking this sort of medication.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 25/05/2022 07:54

I think these shooters are usually incel types who hate women. What better way to hurt women than to kill their children?

Another country with high gun ownership, but low mass shootings is Switzerland. I believe that, very sensibly, they do have more gun control laws.

I honestly don't think the US will ever have gun control. Deaths will happen again and again and appear to be on the rise. It's terrible.

Mommabear20 · 25/05/2022 07:57

It's now 19 dead and 2 injured 😢 absolutely devastated for the families!

yellowsuninthesky · 25/05/2022 07:58

Mumoblue · 25/05/2022 07:47

Fucking horrifying that guns are more valued than children in America.
I really have no words any more. These things just keep happening.

27 school shootings in the US this year alone and that's without all the accidents and other mass shootings. And yet the US government will continue to refuse to act.

No reform of gun laws
No improvement of healthcare including mental healthcare

But they'll ban abortion.

Angry
PermanentTemporary · 25/05/2022 08:00

I believe Switzerland have extremely tight gun storage rules, and ammunition is limited. But I'm not Swiss.

ChristineCagney11 · 25/05/2022 08:02

Jobseeker19 · 25/05/2022 07:35

And always people rushing ro talk about the white males mental health and trying to make excuses for his behaviour.

No idea if that was partly or fully directed at my comment above but definitely not excusing.
Acknowledging the massive over medication of drugs to young people in the US is not an excuse, it's just the truth.
I'm well aware of how the colour of skin changes the reports.
In the UK white young killers usually have a back story on how they were "Such a sweet boy and well loved"
Non white
"Terrorist"

Radioted · 25/05/2022 08:04

So sad, if only they valued the lives of children as much as they did unborn foetuses they might reform gun laws. As they don't these will sadly continue, such a horrific waste of life.

JanisMoplin · 25/05/2022 08:10

I have to go on social media for my job, so can't avoid it and it is just so horrible. The stream of pictures of the children.:(

Regarding race, race is not the only factor in massacres. But it certainly plays a big part, given the targeting of black people and Asian Americans. Plus the way white shooters are treated. Often taken alive, described as quiet young men who are interested in sports and have loving families, while Travyon Martin was shot dead for having a roll of candy in his pocket. White men described as teenagers while 13-year-old black boys described as men.

MarshaBradyo · 25/05/2022 08:14

Seeing their friends die as if they’re on a battle field - Biden’s speech

feel defeated by this and I’m not in US

so so sad

JanisMoplin · 25/05/2022 08:19

As an immigrant to the UK, I find it particularly horrible that many of these parents- or their parents- came to the US to find a better life for their children, and got this. No parent should have to live with that terrible regret and guilt.

Reallyreallyborednow · 25/05/2022 08:19

"I'd much rather have law-abiding citizens, armed, trained so that they can respond when something like this happens, because it's not going to be the last time," he said

where were all these armed law abiding citizens? Why didn’t they respond and stop all those children being killed?

there’s a really interesting account from someone who was at the Las Vegas shooting. Before he was very pro gun, right to defend, only way to stop a bad man with a gun etc..
after he said he realised him and his gun are absolutely fuck all use during an incident, and will likely make things worse. He is pro gun control now.

Reallyreallyborednow · 25/05/2022 08:21

just because these meds have worked well for your son, doesn’t mean they work well for everyone.

I can’t believe I read upthread that someone sends their DC to school with bullet shields in their bags.😢
And that there is such a place as “Bullets and Burgers” for kids.

Shame on you America.

Yes, these backpacks are a thing. When we lived in the states there was a shooting at one of the high schools in our town and I looked into buying them for my children.

The only effect the shooting seemed to have was a campaign group set up calling for teachers to be armed. Fucking unbelievable. All the schools already had armed guards based at them and this was in a low crime area. I worry less about my children going to school now we are back in the UK.

Livelovebehappy · 25/05/2022 08:40

Race does not come into this. But mental health issues of a boy barely out of childhood does. Something has clearly happened in his upbringing that has affected him. It’s heartbreaking that 19 children and an adult have been murdered, but I also can’t help but feel incredibly sad that an 18 year old is so screwed up to do something like this.

KingofLoss · 25/05/2022 08:40

It says a lot that when the alert came up on my phone all I thought was 'that's sad' for a split second and then moved on. Because I'm so used to it.

They are keen to force people to have children they don't want, not so keen on putting things in place to prevent actual children from being slaughtered. 27 school shootings since the start of the year. Imagine being a parent knowing that there WILL be many, many children slaughtered at school this year and beyond, and wondering whether one of those kids will be yours.

I think one reason for not changing their laws is that some Americans don't realise it can be different.

A while ago, I saw a Tiktok of an American teacher who had spoken to a teacher from elsewhere (I think Germany) and was horrified that German schools didn't have active shooter drills. People replied with data on school shootings around the world. The American teacher, and lots of American commenters, were deeply shocked that the US was an outlier. Obviously just anecdata, but shows that even many educated, liberal people don't realise how these shootings aren't inevitable - and I think you need to know that they're not inevitable before you can have the confidence to press for change.

There is something in that . I have a few American Facebook friends, one shared a meme saying " Children of the world this is not how its meant to be "
It's not children of the world it's children of America
And whilst we have knife crime which terrifies me as others have said as terrible as it us it doesn't cause the same carnage .

BlackeyedSusan · 25/05/2022 08:43

I don't understand America at all.

Guns more important than children
Death penalty.
Racist police killings
Maternity leave is shit,
Holiday allowance shit,
Healthcare is not free,

They are supposed to be the leader of the free world but to an outsider it all looks rubbish.

CounsellorTroi · 25/05/2022 08:46

Twizbe · 24/05/2022 22:05

And yet they won't change gun laws.

They’ll just say they need more guns. Armed teachers, armed security guards in schools.

Methylphenidate calms people with adhd down. It's not some sort of terrible substance that sends us out of our minds.

ChristineCagney11 · 25/05/2022 08:48

@BlackeyedSusan
I'd add massive opioid addiction crisis to that list

EurovisionTragic · 25/05/2022 08:51

I feel defeated by this too. It’s people. Im sick of people. Selfish people spreading Covid. Putin and the atrocities his people are inflicting on the Ukraine and the energy and food crisis he has created. Missing children on the news this morning, vanished without a trace, no doubt with a person or people responsible for that. On a lesser level people at my work being fucking rude.

It’s people.

This morning I watched some dogs search for mobile phones and certain scents and I thought, yes, that’s the answer.Get 2 dogs and go live somewhere remote away from people.
