The world is such an awful place at the moment. Like others I am feeling utterly defeated by it.

I can't imagine living in a place where gun owners and 7 week old foetuses are put before young children. I can't imagine the terror those children went through and the nightmare their parents are now living. It's just horrible.

beguilingeyes · 25/05/2022 09:05

How is a teenager even allowed to buy a gun? Just raise the age limit at the very least.
He was too young to drink alcohol, but old enough to kill people?

I'm a Brit living in the US. Really brings it home when my own DC are the age of the kids who were killed. Can't stop thinking about it.... it's sickening and I've just listened to some former Trump staffer blaming it on mental health and Covid. Nothing to do with gun laws apparently. What an absolute load of bollocks. Kids with mental health problems in other countries do not go and kill a class full of 10 year olds.

I would also add though and what isn't often mentioned is how incredibly easy it is to get on school grounds here during the school day... most schools are open plan, no security fencing at all... doors wide open during recess and lunch... makes no sense when school security is so much tighter back in the UK. Not saying it would stop it entirely- but surely it would help!!

Our schools were open plan too... I was teaching in England at the time of Dunblane. You could just walk into schools. Indeed someone walked into that school and nicked staff handbags. Now it is security fences and locked outer doors.

queenofarles · 25/05/2022 09:12

I’ve said this before but America is a third world country with a Gucci belt on.
I really don’t want to speak about the country as a whole but lately I have no idea what’s going on there. that’s the second shooting in ten days,
both carried out by late teenagers , both just happened to own automatic rifles, Something is more disturbing than just the easiness of owning Arms,

EurovisionTragic · 25/05/2022 08:51

I feel defeated by this too. It’s people. Im sick of people. Selfish people spreading Covid. Putin and the atrocities his people are inflicting on the Ukraine and the energy and food crisis he has created. Missing children on the news this morning, vanished without a trace, no doubt with a person or people responsible for that. On a lesser level people at my work being fucking rude.

It’s people.

This morning I watched some dogs search for mobile phones and certain scents and I thought, yes, that’s the answer.Get 2 dogs and go live somewhere remote away from people.

I’m with you. This planet would be so much better without people. theres good individuals. But far outweighed in number by, just people, with selfish wants, taking more, resources then they need.

Dunblane was horrific ,but I'm glad people can't just walk into school in the uk anymore even in my sons mainstream high school everything is locked off ,,huge contrast yep my high school in the 80,s anybody could have wandered in from the streets.

Race does not come into this. But mental health issues of a boy barely out of childhood does. Something has clearly happened in his upbringing that has affected him. It’s heartbreaking that 19 children and an adult have been murdered, but I also can’t help but feel incredibly sad that an 18 year old is so screwed up to do something like this.

whilst the uks mental health support is woeful. Where would you even start in America to access it if you didn’t have cover?

"I'd much rather have law-abiding citizens, armed, trained so that they can respond when something like this happens, because it's not going to be the last time," he said

where were all these armed law abiding citizens? Why didn’t they respond and stop all those children being killed?

there’s a really interesting account from someone who was at the Las Vegas shooting. Before he was very pro gun, right to defend, only way to stop a bad man with a gun etc..
after he said he realised him and his gun are absolutely fuck all use during an incident, and will likely make things worse. He is pro gun control now.

i was thinking about this too. Isn’t vegas an open carry state?
i know the shooter was from a window so you’d have to identify them.

Reallyreallyborednow · 25/05/2022 09:25

i am also much happier living in a mostly gun free society. My neighbour has a gun licence for competitive shooting and the Police do very thorough checks. Not just tick boxes but proper conversations about their personality and any conversations you may have had.

americans don’t seem to understand that having armed civilians actually does fuck all to stop their “bad men with guns”. Far better and more effective to have specialised, trained armed response units who can take a suspect out without getting loads more civilians shot in the process. More chance of surviving if you hide than if you whip out a gun and join in the shooting.

Flatandhappy · 25/05/2022 09:27

We got a train from San Diego to LA a few days ago on our way home, there was a sign at the ticket desk asking people to check in their guns before boarding. The fact that it was so normal totally freaked me out.

ChristineCagney11 · 25/05/2022 09:28

@EurovisionTragic
We are a shameful species, we really are.
Your plan is the answer.
Animals and nature every time. I genuinely hope you get there.

theemperorhasnoclothes · 25/05/2022 09:30

The thing is the constitution says 'A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.'

But none of these people with guns are part of a 'well regulated militia' are they? They're talking about the right to bear arms without bothering to do anything about the condition for that.

It doesn't say any random angry man should have a gun so he can kill loads of kids. Which is what's happening.

The Onion is on point as always - I think they just recycle this every time there's a mass shooting (every few months, I guess).
'No way to prevent this', says only nation where this regularly happens'

@ChristineCagney11 I was listening to a Radio4 programme last night on the Saclas (sp?) About that.

Thanks to all American based posters who have explained things there. It is eye opening.

And our country is not that great either sometimes with concerning things going on. Government (not just partygate either) and crime wise...

I am beginning to see why religion is so prevalent and why thoughts and prayers are offered. You can't rely on the state to support you and there is lack of control over some big stuff you need to rely on yourself and or some unseen higher power...

SpangledShambles · 25/05/2022 02:54

If I lived in the US my children would be home schooled. It is not safe in their schools.

Shooters also target supermarkets, petrol stations, churches, universities, stadiums………. Home schooling isn’t going to keep people safe. Stopping the sale of assault weapons could make a difference, as Biden said “ Deer don’t wear body armour” . But apparently the profit on assault weapons is greater than the profit on hunting rifles.

NoJudgement0322 · 25/05/2022 09:40

Such a horrific thing to have happened and sadly not isolated. Whilst I appreciate it isn't as simple as just ban guns and kids won't be killed tighter restrictions would go a long way! There is no reason to own the types of weapons some of these killers do. They were designed for mass destruction not sport.

LizBennet · 25/05/2022 09:41

Good God, what awful news to wake up to 😭
How the hell has he been able to get into a school, given their track record of school shootings?
Just appalling 💔

Reallyreallyborednow · 25/05/2022 09:44

And our country is not that great either sometimes with concerning things going on

still rather live here with no mass shootings (or at least incredibly rare), access to clean water, healthcare free at the point of delivery, ability to make my own choices regarding my own body….

They sit in McDonalds with their guns at their side in Texas - there are few gun laws in Texas. They even have Christmas specials on guns. This is why so much of this happens there.

dreamingbohemian · 25/05/2022 09:49

Steve Kerr's father was Malcolm Kerr, the president of the American University of Beirut, who was assassinated during the Lebanese civil war. Steve has always been very outspoken about gun violence, I wish more people in sports were.

RitaFaircloughsWig · 25/05/2022 09:52

The mentality is hard to understand.

Texas Gun Laws: Some Q & A
Q: Do I need a permit to buy handguns or long arms in Texas?
A: No.
However, you must be at least 18 to purchase a long arm, 21 or older to buy a handgun, and 18+ to possess a firearm in general (there are exceptions to this last rule for minors using guns under adult supervision).

Q: Does Texas require residents to register long arms or handguns?
A: No.

Q: Does Texas have an “assault weapons” law?
A: No.

Q: Does Texas require an owner license for firearms?
A: No.

Q: Do Texas gun laws permit the concealed carry of handguns?
A: Yes, contingent upon the carrier possessing the appropriate permit.
However, there are restrictions on where a firearm may be carried, such as public offices and certain types of private property.
Details on Texas’ concealed carry statutes follow this section of this article.

Read somewhere recently that the biggest cause of death to under 18s in the US is gunshot wounds.

how did a society end up there?

ChristineCagney11 · 25/05/2022 10:03

@RitaFaircloughsWig
Basically next to no laws for gun control in Texas.
I honestly don't know how this is ever going to change there.
In Japan and in the UK because of Dunblane things were mostly nipped in the bud early on. Australia had a big gun problem but managed to reign it in.
If it's not been stopped by now in the US given all the shootings will it ever ?
I don't mean people can't try but what has to change ?
