This isn't correct.

A massive majority (around 95%) of Americans from both sides of the political spectrum want reforms and making it more difficult for the wrong people to get them, so enhanced background checks. However the politicians who hold the power keep in with the powerful gun lobby and don't force these laws. Texas governor even made it easier recently to get a gun in Texas

And there I was thinking that the United States was supposed to be a democracy...

We didn't have a big gun culture, though even before Dunblane ,it wasn't normal for people to grow up with guns in the house,.

The reason we didn't have a gun culture may be a gradual tightening of controls over many decades. People see Dunblane as the seminal influencer over firearms legislation in UK history but in many ways it wasn't. There was a massive change after Hungerford in 1987 for instance.
"In the aftermath of the Hungerford massacre, Parliament passed the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988. This confined semi-automatic and pump-action centre-fire rifles, military weapons firing explosive ammunition, short shotguns that had magazines, and elevated both pump-action and self-loading rifles to the Prohibited category. Registration and secure storage of shotguns held on Shotgun Certificates became required, and shotguns with more than a 2+1 capacity came to need a Firearm Certificate. The law also introduced new restrictions on shotguns. Rifles in .22 rimfire and semi-automatic pistols were unaffected."
There were similar acts in stages over most of the 20th century and there are still amendments happening now to clear up loopholes and tighten existing laws, the most recent being legislation to tighten up the law on antique firearms in 2021.
It is notable that there have been only 4 mass shootings in modern British history. Still 4 too many, of course.

I was 11 and in my last year of primary school when Dunblane happened. I vividly remember where I was when I heard it on the radio news. In America it’s every month and I can’t understand why people don’t get angry and push for change.

when dunblane happened there was an amnesty and people wilfully and wanted to hand their guns over, even before the law change.

Americans aren’t wilfully giving up their guns even without legislation.

did anyone see the press conference in Texas when the democrats candidate called them out on it. He was calm and concise, the republican hurling abuse at him.

I didn’t see it but that people handed their guns in after Dunblane is something.

The lack of concern over children’s lives there is too upsetting,

Hats off to whoever in the Onion editorial team did this. This is their front page today. Every single time they've run the same story recently (changing the details of where it happened etc but the bulk of the article is the same). Look at the whole front page. It really has a big impact. If you click through to the articles each has a different date so they probably just have reproduced every article they've run on this in the past few years.

That FB comment posted by @Tinkerblonde1

Stop making it so easy for people to buy one. No one seemed to worry about gun control whenever BLM was burning down cities carrying their guns.

This is the crux of it.

This is why there will never be gun control in the US.

This person was expressing the racist foundations of support for the Second Amendment. Rednecks like it because they still fear Nat Turner and believe in the inalienable right of white America to defend itself against black America.

And, the very next day after the shooting, a high school student in Texas is arrested at the school for having guns. One of them an AK-47.

Just watched Sky's Mark Stone interviewing Ted Cruz in Uvalde. Senator Cruz very unhappy and angry about being asked why these types of events are so commonplace in the States and nowhere else, why a just turned 18 year old was able to legally purchase two AR 15 type assault rifles.

Been so upset and furious all yesterday because of my family in Texas. It is totally pointless worrying. But I can't help it.

'Well regulated militia'? I think not.

no surprise there, this is coming from the guy who sneaked out to New Mexico when people in Texas were literally dying from extreme cold weather and power cuts.

Marco Rubio excuses on Fox News are even worse!
its already being downplayed , less news coverage today , these things will get more and more common I’m afraid.

I keep thinking about those poor children, how scared they must have been. It’s just horrific and I don’t know how parents in the US cope with sending their kids to school. For so many they have no choice, they don’t have the luxury of quitting their jobs to home school but I just don’t know how they cope with it and my heart goes out to them. In the UK, for all its problems, we don’t have to worry about sending our kids to school every day.

colouringindoors · 26/05/2022 20:08

Just read that the husband of one of the teachers who was murdered, has since died of a fatal heart attack. Leaving four children. They were high school sweethearts and had been married 24 years. He literally was heartbroken. 😪😪😪

toomuchlaundry · 26/05/2022 21:02

Oh how sad 😔

EvilPea · 27/05/2022 09:14

I think if the last few months have taught us anything businesses should not be allowed to donate money or services to politicians. It shouldn’t work the way it does.
