What a genius idea.

I actually despair :( that country is completely broken

My word, it’s craziness. The kids in my class are always nosing around my desk and picking things up. I almost had a heart attack when one clambered onto my chair and reached the shelf for the staple gun in a split second. He calmly told me it was better to staple his pictures together than use tape.
My lot would think a gun was a toy. These people are nuts.

How can they not see they need to change their gun laws

Because they think their Constitution is the greatest document ever drawn up and their Founding Fathers were the wisest men who ever lived. Knew a Yank who used to have his rifle with him every time he drove into town. Because it was his constitutional right to bear arms.

As an American, I can’t even begin to explain the intense emotions we feel every time this happens. The fear, the anger, the despair.

I don’t personally know a single person that doesn’t want radical gun reform. Even the people I know who own guns want changes.

There is no school that is safe. No neighborhood. There was a gun found on my own child’s school campus this month. It was just in a student’s car (students drive to school at 15 and up in our rural area). And nothing happened, but it is still terrifying.

Fraaahnces · 24/05/2022 23:43

So lucky that we can send our kids to schools without airport-style security…

tunnocksreturns2019 · 24/05/2022 23:47

Senator Chris Murphy spoke well.

Will anything ever change?

tunnocksreturns2019 · 24/05/2022 23:47

My link went well 🙄 but do watch regardless

Ponderingwindow · 24/05/2022 23:48

The reason we can’t get gun laws changed is that our system is built to give extra weight to low-population areas. These areas tend to be the ultra-conservative, ultra-religious voters. I happen to live in a liberal party enclave in the middle of a larger conservative area. Because of the way the voting districts are drawn, my vote doesn’t end up counting towards President and I always lose at picking a senator. Then our senators get an equal vote with those from a more populous state.

it was designed this way because western states were worried that they would be ignored. It made sense when our constitution was drafted and travel and communication were difficult. It’s non-sensical now that we can have a meeting with anyone anywhere in the world by turning on the computer.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 24/05/2022 23:48

I keep seeing people say that this is very complicated, American culture is different, etc etc etc. But all I can think is: it might be complicated, but surely even complicated is worth it to stop kids dying like this? And adults die too in mass shootings of course, and I don't want to lose sight of that, but there's this visceral sense of wrongness when it's primary school aged children dying like that.

threecupsofteaminimum · 24/05/2022 23:49

All too easily avoided unfortunately.

Whilst the NRA funds the government things will never change over there. It's sickening.

Whelmed · 24/05/2022 23:52

So awful. Why won't they change their laws? Madness. Sadly there will be so many other mass shootings this year in USA.

Not until the entire political system over there has had a complete overhaul.

Liveliferun · 24/05/2022 23:56

Children aged 7-10 were shot and killed.
i have a 7 year old.
FFS
US of fucking A - if this was happening in a Middle East country you would be the first to condemn it as backward, thuggish and uncivilised. Shame on all of you for letting this happen, again and again. Your children, FFS. Even kids not directly affected will live with the constant fear and what if. You should be on the streets protesting, demanding change. But no, you’re policing women’s bodies instead. RIP little angels, sleep now.

trainnane · 24/05/2022 23:59

I struggle to feel shocked when they won't give up guns as it's their right and it happens a lot

altiara · 25/05/2022 00:01

I've just seen that the Texas Attorney General has suggested arming teachers.

So basically solving the problem of guns... With more guns.

This is what I found most shocking, the idea of having guns in schools as standard!
Sadly, I didn’t find it shocking that this incident occurred in the US.
RIP little ones.

Disneydatknee88 · 25/05/2022 00:02

How did he get into the school? I'm in the UK and you can't be buzzed in without a good reason and we don't even have that level of threat. He was 18. He has no reason to be in the elementary school.

I don't see why this one made the news. There is almost one every week.

The sky is blue, water is wet and America has had a school shooting.

And all those things will be true in 10 years time.

helloaibu · 25/05/2022 00:05

10 years since Sandy Hook and nothing has changed.

Too busy trying to ban abortion.

Americans must be terrified to send their children to school.

colouringindoors · 25/05/2022 00:05

Horrendous. Those poor, poor children and their families.

There's one other dimension too. Men. 95% of mass shootings are carried out by men. In 60% of cases those men are also responsible for domestic violence. Today's shooter killed his grandmother too.

America's insane gun laws make male violence easier and deadlier.

The sad thing is it's not a shock. It will keep happening sadly.

don’t be so ridiculous. Do you think the average American approves of school shootings or something? Ffs

trainnane · 25/05/2022 00:20

Looked on Sky news and first thing is about the Texas guy saying no need to ban guns. Guns rank higher than kids lives.

ToastedWaffle · 25/05/2022 00:25

So sad. RIP little darlings.

Mamanyt · 25/05/2022 00:33

This is the state that just recently made buying guns FAR easier. This is the state where, THE VERY FIRST DAY that the law went into effect, a woman tried to shoot a stray dog and shot her son, instead. And our politicians (the right-wingers) offer "thoughts and prayers," and tell us "this is the cost of freedom." Horse's ass. These same people bleat, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns, which is total BS. If guns are outlawed, outlaws can't get guns, because most of them were STOLEN FROM US TO BEGIN WITH!

14 students and 1 teacher dead, 15 more people hospitalized, some quite seriously wounded. "Thoughts and prayers." I want to vomit. Oh, and also, "This is not the time to talk about gun control! We must focus on the families!" How about lets ask those families if they'd like some gun control!

Sorry. I live in the US. I am disgusted, and fed up.

End Rant.

Omega33 · 25/05/2022 00:36

I think one reason for not changing their laws is that some Americans don't realise it can be different.

A while ago, I saw a Tiktok of an American teacher who had spoken to a teacher from elsewhere (I think Germany) and was horrified that German schools didn't have active shooter drills. People replied with data on school shootings around the world. The American teacher, and lots of American commenters, were deeply shocked that the US was an outlier. Obviously just anecdata, but shows that even many educated, liberal people don't realise how these shootings aren't inevitable - and I think you need to know that they're not inevitable before you can have the confidence to press for change.
